Does The Metfornin Help You Loose Weight

Does metformin help you lose weight?

I have PCOS and took it for that.. It is supposed to (or I was told by the doctor) but I never really saw a difference. I think it is a long term thing. If you are taking it for diabetes, you need to talk to the doc and/or pharmasist to help you and be on the safe side.

It is all depending on why you are taking it.

When do you lose weight with Metformin?

I have been on it for 5 or 6 weeks now. At first I gained 10pounds super quick all in my stomach. Then I lost 5poounds once I got on the full dosage. Since then, (about 3 or 4 weeks on the full dosage) I haven't lost any weight, and I have been eating like a bird. What gives???

Metformin to help lose weight?

The doctor prescribed me Metformin, but I only take it when my blood sugar go to high, because the pill make feel real bad. I don't know if they make you lose weight. I lost about 27 pounds and my sugar went down. I have the same problem with cholesterol, I take medication and is still high. Sometimes there is nothing we can do since the liver produce it by itself. Use grape oil to cook, that take about 480 degree when you fry something. It's expensive and you can get it in the health food store. Olive oil is good for salad, but once you cook food with, is like any other oil. You can take one spoon of olive oil before go to sleep, also in the morning take a lemon juice, that help the liver to digest, eat wheat integral bread instead of regular bread, avoid candy, coke, fast food. Try to eat salmon, fish, salad. You don't have to starve to death, but you can eat a small portion. You will loose weight, I lost 27 pounds and I look like a grasshopper, if I keep loosing weight I will desappear. I hope I helped you.

Metformin and weight loss?

I'm taking 2000mg a day of Metformin for Insulin resistance from PCOS. Will this medicine help me lose weight (of course along with diet and exercise)? It has been a nightmare trying to lose weight with PCOS.

Does Metformin cause you to lose or gain?

I lost over 60 pounds on Metformin. I am told this is common.

Does diabetic medicine help lose weight?

Yes, some medicines that are given to control diabetes help in losing body weight (5-7% of total body weight). The medicines that help in weight reduction are metformin, exenatide and liraglutide. These medicines not only help in controlling blood sugars but also help in achieving ideal BMI (body mass index). In patients with type 2 diabetes, obesity is one of the most common complications as well as causative factors, which if neglected can damage vital organs like liver, heart and brain. Thus, managing weight or losing weight in diabetics is even more challenging.Metformin, a first line drug for the treatment of diabetes, helps in losing weight by increasing the sensitivity of body cells towards insulin and delaying the absorption of glucose from gut. This causes easy satiety and fullness while eating, thus appetite reduces and helps in losing weight.Drugs like exenatide and liraglutide are similar to enzymes of gut that reduce the motility of stomach and reduce absorption of complex sugars, thus causing easy satiety in reduction in appetite which accelerates weight loss. Both of these drugs are available in injectable form.On loses close to 5-7% of total body weight with these drugs, which means if you are weighing 90 kgs, these medicines will help you lose 4-7 kgs of weight, over a period of 6 months. If this effect is coupled with exercises, the weight loss is further accelerated and it helps in preventing diabetic complications as well as achieving ideal BMI.Dr. Varun GuptaThe Editorial Team, 1mg

How safe is it to use metformin for weight loss?

I’m not a doctor so not medical advice, nor an expert on weight loss or metformin. Here’s one study that concluded that both insulin resistant and insulin sensitive patients experienced significant weight loss using metformin.Effectiveness of metformin on weight loss in non-diabetic individuals with obesity.Given what we know of metformin’s action and these results, it is likely it is affecting “fuel partitioning” in some way, that is what the body does with energy intake of various forms (fats, carbs). We know that high insulin leads to higher fat storage, so that makes sense.Metformin is an interesting substance, as it is helpful in assisting the body in the proper uptake of glucose. If I recall correctly, it is one of the few diabetes meds that doesn’t cause hypos, but that is only my recollection. Some recent research showed that while most diabetics on meds to control their blood glucose levels, do get some lowering/control, they DON’T benefit from that “improvement” with respect to outcomes like heart disease and diabetic complications. This was surprising to the doctors / ADA that think diabetes is all about blood sugar “control”.Metformin was an exception in a number of ways that I won’t go into here, other than to say the incidence of a number of diseases were much lower in the diabetics using metformin, including cancer! This has resulted in a surge of interest in metformin as a possible longevity drug.Be sure to consult a doctor before taking drugs, even things that appear to be benign.

Metformin purely for weight loss?

Metformin helps in PCOS in several ways. First, as previously mentioned, PCOS is associated with insulin resistance. Metformin suppresses hepatic gluconeogenesis (glucose production) and helps to control blood glucose levels. Second; Metfromin does indeed help with weight loss, albeit quite modestly. Patients on Metfromin lose on average only 5-7 pounds. Third, Metformin when used with Clomiphene helps induce ovulation to help restore normal menstrual cycles and increase fertility.

So, to answer your question more directly, it is unlikely your doctor prescribed the Metformin only for weight loss. There are more effective methods for weight loss than Metformin. However, Metformin will help to reduce many of the symptoms of PCOS (including modest weight loss).

Weight loss with PCOS and Metformin?

i was diagnosed with PCOS last year. i was a pretty nice size, then all of a sudden i gained like 40 lbs out of no where. i go to my OBGYN and all he ever says is lose weight, lose weight and take birth control pills. but he should know weight loss with this condition is hard. i am trying. however, i have continued to gain weight. i recently found out about a drug named Metformin that women with PCOS are taking to aid in weight loss by controlling insulin. i really would like to try this, however its so discouraging to go back to my doctor only for him to weigh me and see that i've gained weight and say im not following directions, which i am. what should i do? this is a very stressful condition and a discouraging doctor does not help.\

by the way; if any of you have taken or currently taking metformin for PCOS, please let me know what your results/side affects are.
