How much does a hairline fracture hurt?

You can see from the answers the others have provided that everyones different. Hairline fractures can be really painful in some people and others hardly notice they have it. Hairline fractures are really called stress fractures. It is a thin break in the bone and usually (depends for each person) the doctors will usually tell you to just take it easy, wear a brace, stay off of it , and your body should heal it yourself. Its minimal trauma to your bone and because the crack extends to the outer layer of the bone instead of all the way through it will not hurt as a "normal" broken bone.

Personal Experience: I had surgery on a bone in my foot and because the bone was brittle afterwards the bone broke but it was a small hair line fracture. I didnt know it at the time and I was in alot of pain, I couldnt walk and my physicians orders at the time was to just take it easy on it and it would heal up on itself and he was wrong! I was still complaining of pain all the time and finally a couple months later he saw that it wasnt healing so he had to perform another surgery to put a screw to hold that bone together!

Usually its not that big of a deal and even if they find a hairline fracture they will probably tell you to ice the area, try to take it easy, and take something for the pain or swelling like advil or motrin. On the negative side, they may require splints sometimes and if its serious they may have to do something about...so my advice is to go see a doctor, they will probably want to do a X-Ray and determine where to go from there. But I do want to tell you that Xrays dont always show hairline fractures and they might want to do a MRI or a bone scan (they sound bad but Ive done both and its just like x-rays).It wouldnt hurt to go but not going could end up being a problem.

I read your other question about going to the doctor and after I read about getting hit in the head by the car door, I think you should go to the doc just because its not in your leg or your arm or something like that, your area is a bit more serious!

Could i have a hairline fracture in my hand? wrist?

Sorry about your getting hurt. My guess is also a hairline fracture, and there doesn't have to be swelling for that. My daughter did the same thing, and it only hurt when the Dr. touched the exact spot where it was broken.

I was a very BAD parent, because she did it right before we left for a trip to Disney World. They weren't sure if it was broken, and the Dr. gave her a temporary velcro on cast until we got back. She SWORE it didn't hurt, so by the end of the vacation, we were letting her on the wet rides and roller coasters without it. We got back from vacation, had another xray, and it was a hairline fracture... six weeks in a cast.

She did it falling exactly like you did, only she fell off her bike, put her hands forward to catch herself, and slapped the pavement. No swelling, no bruising. Just generally sore all over with one spot that was a little more sore than the rest but not enough to say it was definitely broken.

The pins and needles are scary thing... sounds like a pinched nerve or something. I'd get it looked at.

GOOD LUCK!

Hairline fracture in front tooth?

Without seeing your tooth, it is impossible to know what advice to give you.

See your dentist. He will shine his high-intensity light through the tooth to see if he can guage the degree of the fracture, if that is what it is.

He might also take an x-ray although minor fractures are VERY hard to see on an x-ray. Digital x-rays are the best for minute features.

The dentist should do a vitality test to see if the nerve has been damaged. If so, you are in for a root canal. From your description (you did NOT mention HOT sensitivity), you are fine.

If he determines that the tooth is at risk for further fracture he might recommend you get a porcelain crown. You could wait for the tooth to fracture first, because maybe it never will, but that risk depends on how much tooth structure you are likely to loose if it does fracture off. If you loose too much tooth, you won't be able to get your crown without getting into tooth lengthening surgery (basically trimming gum tissue to expose more of your tooth...nasty on a front tooth!).

Can hairline fractures be seen on an X-ray?

When you have an injury which is showing swelling, contusion type bruising, sensitive to pressure and weakness in support of the limb, the first diagnosis will be through an ultra sound to examine soft tissue and an X-ray, however depending on the swelling and time from injury, the significance and extent of the injury may not be fully evident, and radioactive dye Bone Scan called a CT Scan will be used to allow the potential fissure to become more apparent. If the injury is complicated by numbing, has impact on the central nervous system, or generally needs more clarity for possible surgery, an MRI or Magnetic Resonance Imaging will be taken.Know that a small hairline fracture or fissure is serious as it can expand if not taken proper care of.

How painful is a hairline fracture?

It can be as painful as a displaced fracture especially in children. My daughter managed to get one and would not bear weight on her foot. Initially reading of the radiograph was normal until the pediatric radiologist reviewed the film and made the call. Plain films are not always diagnostic. A special study such as MRI or bone scan might be necessary

How do you treat a hairline fracture in hand?

Considering that the fracture is undisplaced then plaster cast and RICE protocol (Rest, Immobilisation, Cold, Elevation of the affected limb). Follow ups and X-rays as administered by your physician. Healing times vary and tepend on the location and type of the fracture, age, sex, some diseases (e.g. osteoporosis, diabetes mellitus, rheumatoid arthritis) and bad habits (smoking and alcoholism greatly delay fracture healing).

How do I know if I hairline fractured my ankle?
