Does This Sound Like I Fractured My Ankle

Does this sound more like a fracture or a sprain?

About a week and a half ago, I was doing jumping pull-ups and came down on my foot/ankle wrong. Since then, I’ve had worsening pain, as well as some bruising and swelling. I also have a hard, very painful notch over the top, lateral part of my foot (like over the fifth metatarsal area). Walking has also become more and more bothersome. I know that only a doctor and x-ray can give a definitive diagnosis, but I really do not want to waste someone’s time if it’s minor or if I’m overreacting.

What is the best way to recover from a fractured ankle?

Best way is to take care of the symptoms of fractured ankle those usually are pain, swelling, bruising and tenderness. For simple fractures one can follow the following protocol.PRICE- protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. Analgesic are to be taken to counter the pain.Gradually start weight bearing and then the role of physiotherapy comes. One can start the stregthening, stretching and range of motion exercises when fracture is stable which usually takes 4–6 weeks of time. After which one can gradually return to normal life while taking care of any complications if there. For major fractures or say complex fractures more aggressive measures are needed as surgery and post op care.

Does this sound like a fractured ankle to you? (Warning: Pictures of bruising.)

Hard to tell. These are the symptoms docs check for when looking for a fracture:Localized pain when local pressure is applied on the siteAxial pressure in the direction of the long bone causing localized painImpaired function, in your case can't bear your weight standing/walkingDislocationEnds of a broken bone protruding through one's broken skin not applicable in your case.If you can still walk on your ankle it most likely isn't broken, although a hairline fracture is still a possibility. So get to a hospital a get an X ray, in China that means waiting for a long time until a doc can see you first.Usually, in fractured, not having much dislocation, no surgery would be needed.

How can you tell when your ankle is fractured, broken, or just sprained?

I rolled in in a basketball game, and sat out. I could walk on it, painfully. I played the rest of the game doing a kind of skip-run as not to put weight on it. I then played a soccer game and another basketball game, doing the same type of run. My ankle is twice its normal size on the outside bone and is very very sore. i keep it elevated when I can. I have a fabric brace on that helps a bit. I went to school today but came home before then end of third hour because my ankle hurt very badly and I was tired of walking on it. Does this sound serious? When can I get back in the game? I have a very bad limp at the moment.

How can a coach rule out fractures of the ankle and low leg?

There are few tests that can be done to likely rule out a fracture such as:

1. Percussion tests
2. Ability to bear weight
3. Lack of tenderness, etc....

...however, it depends on the nature of the fracture and it's particular location. In the end, however, radiological studies are best at ruling out fractures.

Is my ankle fractured or bruised?

Signs of a fracture: Swelling immediatley, bruising on spot, sensitivity to touch, etc.
You need to go to a doctor, because it does sound like it could be a fracture. I know it sucks about the money, but its better than not being able to walk correctly.

Oh and also, there are some places that are like, after hours places, and they have x-ray machines there. It's like, a one stop shop!

What should I do about a hairline fracture of my ankle?

Your body needs time and support to heal. Since the X-ray diagnosis states no displacement it should heal without a cast as long as you don't re injure it.  Avoid ballistic movements such as playing squash, especially any movements which elicit sharp bone pain.  Vertical stress such as walking should be helpful as well as range of motion ROM exercises to maintain flexibility.  It may also help to wear a compression sleeve, sock or tights. It should take from 4-6 weeks to return to training and competition after 8 weeks. If you play squash on this injury you risk complications such as compartment syndrome or other such problems.

Why does my ankle make a cracking sound every time I walk?

The ankle, or any bony joint, can make a cracking sound when it is moved. In general, the sound is nothing to worry about for it is not a harbinger of bad things to come. As a previous poster said, it could be gas bubbles in the joints being squeezed and moved from one place to another while walking, for example. The sound could also be tendons rolling and snapping over bony prominences in the ankle as muscles are activated during activity.Arguably, the ankle is the most complicated joint in the body because in reality the ankle can be thought of as multiple “sub-joints” combining together to form a “master joint,” known as the ankle. Each one of these “sub-joints” can and will influence the activity/function of the other joints. The average ankle supports and absorbs a tremendous amount of force during walking and other activities, and during those activities has to adapt and accommodate a shifting body, uneven ground surfaces, and various physical demands placed upon it by an imperfect body acting upon an imperfect environment. All of these facts can contribute to your ankle making a cracking sound, none of which should concern you. I hope this helps.

What cast should I put on for my ankle hairline fracture?

Peter Gerbino is correct. It depends on your pain, your activity level, etc. Immobilization for a hairline fracture is not always recommended if you don't need it. The reason for that, especially because there is tendon involvement, is that immobilization also causes the muscles, tendons, and ligaments to lock up along with the rest of your foot. It can really lower you ankle mobility and that is something you do not want when you are recovering from an injury to your foot. Rest, use ice on the area, use a small tensor band to reduce swelling, and elevate your foot above your heart. Hope this helps; speedy recovery!
