Dog Breathing Is Strange

Dog breathing irregularly and acting strangely URGENT?

I am house-sitting with my boyfriend and his sister for their parents, watching the animals. About an hour ago we noticed that their dog, a ten year old lab/pitbull mix, started breathing irregularly and acting strangely. She refuses to eat, and this dog NEVER passes up food. Earlier today I caught her munching on an apple core, but she didn't seem to get too far into it. I've already searched answers about dogs eating apple cores and it seems that it's probably not the cause. We did a test, and she still got up to bark at the door when we rang the doorbell, but as I said, she won't eat, and she is just laying around and not really responding to us besides growling when we touch her (the growling is not entirely irregular for her-she's kind of a strange dog). I'm thinking she could be kind of sad because her owners are away, but they only left last night.

her breathing is kind of like this (please forgive me, I don't really know how to explain this properly): breath, breathbreath, breath, breathbreath, breath, breathbreath, breath, breathbreath. She breathes normally for one breath, and then quickly/double for the next one.

Of course the best thing would be to take her to a vet, but we do not have any money and neither do the owners. And I'm talking seriously broke, zero money in the bank. If she is in immediate danger, I will take her to the vet tonight and we can figure out the money later, but if it doesn't necessarily seem too life-threatening I'd like to see if we could wait until tomorrow or until her owners get back which will be the day after tomorrow. What do you think?

extra info- the dog is a little overweight. she usually responds to people, goes up to them and wags her tail when they call her name, which she isn't doing now. she hasn't thrown up. she is laying in the other room as if she's trying to get away from us and just be alone. not sure if its relevant but she does like carrots, hasn't had any today but eats them a few days out of the week. besides that there's nothing really unusual about the dog normally. again, I'm wondering if she is just missing her owners because she is a bit of a mama's girl. she's just acting really strange right now and we're not sure what to do. thank you so much in advance.

My dogs breathing is sometimes weird, what could it be?

It sounds like you're describing what is sometimes referred to as a "backward sneeze" or "inward sneeze": a sharp inhale with a snorting sound... It's often caused by dogs eating too fast or by 'gulping" air too quickly, so there is a "tickling" sensation just at the back of the mouth where the nasal passages come down to meet the throat's airway. It's nothing to be concerned about unless it's persistent (more than a few minutes).

My dog does strange breathing. Do you know why?

maybe she's just hot? dogs don't have sweat glands, so they pant to cool down.

What can I do if my dog just stops breathing?

Ok. Not a dog but a kitten 6 months old. We were having dinner at mother in laws house. Kitten went under the couch and seconds later we heard a strange noise and kitten flopping around. I moved the couch out and found the kitten lying motionless with hair on front of his chest and head singed off. Terrible smell. Kitten had been chewing on an extension cord and electrocuted himself. He wasn't breathing and was too small to find pulse. Held him in my left palm and did chest compressions with one right hand finger and then mouth to front of face. He was so tiny I could have put his whole head in my mouth. He came too in about 30 seconds or so, coughing and spitting, blinking his eyes, shaking his head. He was wobbly on his feet for another 5 minutes and confused. He was quickly back to normal and OK. We thought about renaming him after surviving his ordeal. I thought we ought to call him Sparky but I was out voted. His name is now Lucky and he leaves electrical cords strictly alone.

My dog makes a strange noise...i'm worried!!!?

Pekes and the like always have trouble breathing, their faces are so squashed. I haven't seen a 'peke-a-pom' before so I don't know how squashed their faces are, but if they're anything like true pekingeses their breathing will be awful.

Have the animal looked at by a vet. You should always go to a vet if you're worried, and in this case the vet can let you know if your dog is having real trouble breathing or if this is an acceptable amount of snorting/clicking for her facial conformation! Make sure the vet has a good long chat with you and doesn't just glance and the dog and say 'it's fine'. I've never met a vet who would do this, but you never know.

My dog is acting weird... Breathing heavy and licking his paws late at night and very annoying...?

There are several (prominent) reasons your dog could be doing this. It could either be pain, allergies, anxiety or just boredom.

1) Pain: Do you notice your dog licking just one paw or both? If it's only one paw then this is usually the best conclusion. Check your dogs paw(s) to look for any noticeable wounds, insect bites, or embedded objects.

2) Allergies: Your dog's paws could be itching or irritated for a number of reasons due to allergies (i.e. walking on weeds, carpet cleaners, food choice & more). It's pretty difficult to determine what is actually causing the dog to have these allergic reactions...so the easiest solution would to just medicate it with anti-histamines.

3) Anxiety: Related to humans biting their nails, dogs can become very anxious or nervous for many different reasons, ranging from separation anxiety to obsessive disorders. It may be hard to treat a dog for this type of licking/chewing (which may be destructive), but you can try to fix the causes if your dog shows any of them. If the anxiousness persists after trying to resolve it yourself or even becomes worse you should contact your veterinarian, who may prescribe sedatives for times when the dog may become extra anxious.

4) Boredom: A very common thing to happen to dogs, especially since their daily rituals have changed over time. Dogs were once used to hunt & help humans with daily tasks; now they are usually left at home for lengthy periods of time while their humans go to work, school or on a day trip. This probably the easiest problem to fix...just have your dog exercise more when you are around, give them a meaning in life, and give them something to occupy themselves (other than their paws) when you are away. Whether it be going for long walks, going to a dog park, playing fetch in the backyard or going swimming. A good occupant for when you will be gone is to give the dog a Kong toy (filled with peanut butter or dog biscuits).

You may also try to discourage your dog from licking his paws by purchasing sprays that are bitter/sour to the taste.

I had a Maltese that would continually lick one of her front feet, which eventually changed her fur on that foot to a pink/reddish color (from their saliva). We asked the Vet and she said it was just caused by boredom. We tried to get her to stop, but nothing worked & she never injured herself.

Hope this helps!

Why would my dog eat grass ravenously? Hes also breathing funny..?

What kind of dog is this, and what do you mean by breathing funny? While dogs will often eat grass when their stomach is upset, it will not make them feel any better, probably worse. If this is a large dog and his belly looks bloated contact your vet immediately, do not wait. If he is struggling to breath do the same. If you mean he is panting, that is often a sign of pain. Stop him from eating the grass, withhold all food and water for at least 4-6 hours to let his stomach settle. Check around the house to make sure he didnt get into anything. If you can give me more info I might be able to help more.

My dog is breathing hard and making a weird huffing noise?

He acts completely normal all the time (even when breathing hard) he just breaths (I don't think it is technically panting) all the time. He has also made this weird huffing noise maybe three times last week. I'm not sure if he has stopped making it or not, but it still bothers me. I can't really describe it, but I'll try.

It looked like he would suck in his jowls and close his nostrils and breath in really hard then breath out. He would continue doing this for a while. Maybe it was just coincidence but it seemed like he stopped doing this when I rubbed his neck.

Again other than these strange huffing noises and breathing hard all the time he is perfectly normal. He still loves his walks (and asks for more) and runs around the house like crazy (just playing of course). So I'm not really sure what the problem is. If it weren't for his level of energy I would take him to the vet, but since he is still so energetic I question whether or not I should.

He also barks at everything and reacts to every sound as if he were extremely high strung. I don't know if this means anything or not, or if it is helpful to figuring out what is going on with him.

Dog is vomiting yellow foam, shaking, and breathing heavily? Read info PLEASE.?

Breed: Teacup Chihuahah
Age: About 11
Weight: About 5-6 pounds
Sex: Female
Has had a couple seizures in her life. Last one was about 2 weeks ago. She was sitting on the top of the couch and fell onto the seat of the couch and was shaking, with foam coming out of her mouth and couldn't breath. I was on my way to the vet when she stopped. The vet said if she has another one within 24 hours to go to a regualr vet. And they couldn't do anything unless she was seizing while we were there.

Today she was sitting under the table breathing heavily out of her nose. She vomited up a little pile of yellow foamish puke. She was shaking/shivering and still is. This was about 20 minutes to go. Does anybody know what could be wrong with her? Please help asap. Thank you! I will pick best answer!

Why does my Chihuahua dog have a hard time breathing at times?

One thing no one has mentioned is Kennel Cough. Has he been vaccinated for it? It is a highly contagious respiratory disease and is very easily contracted by dogs who haven’t been protected from it. It is basically the Dog Flu, but not contagious to humans. I have seen dogs, especially small dogs, at the shelter who have had Kennel Cough, and they make a wheezing, perhaps even snorting, noise that can sound like they are having trouble breathing, except only sometimes like you are describing. The usual treatment for Kennel Cough is to give the dog some rest and make sure you don’t infect any other dogs, so wash your sheets and don’t take him to parks for a few weeks. If it is a particularly bad case, he will need antibiotics. Keep an eye out for runny nose, loss of apetite and uncharacteristic lethargy.Still, there remains a chance that it is something far more serious, especially if it pertains to breathing, so you should not fool around and have him checked out by a vet just to be sure.
