Electronic Music Playing In

Why do people say electronic music is cheating?

You're a rarity among electronic music artists. Most of your peers cannot play any instruments at all.

That's why people consider it cheating.

I've been playing guitar for almost 20 years and I've barely scratched the surface of what there is to know about playing guitar. Electronic music does not take that kind of time and dedication to get good at making it.

It doesn't bother me personally, but I can understand why a musician with as much time sunk into it as I have might consider using a computer to create music cheating.

Origin of electronic music?

Some say it started with kraftwerk style of music using synths and other tools like that started techno while others say techno started in Detroit by black people.

Others say that disco was the precursor to house music which started a whole movement in the US.

House started in Chicago because djs were experimenting with disco tracks; extending them, adding drum patterns and other edits. The music eventually evolved and splintered to other sub genres of house music like minimal house, acid house, and progressive house. The music went from Chicago to the east coast and down south. The main audience for house music were black people and homosexuals. They mainly played the music in clubs and warehouses.

So black people are to thank for electronic music.

Why do people hate Electronic music?

Alright, so I've been into electronic music since about 6 years ago, so I'm not "yO guyS hear dat NeW SkillrEx song, nasty beats ANd DroP.". But especially in the last 2 years, electronic music has been dissed a lot, especially by rock elitists. Nothing against Rock because I like some of it, but I despise those of you who go "Electronic music isn't music, and takes no skill.",so can somebody shed some light and explain to me why you HATE electronic music SO much?

If you played dubstep or other electronic music for someone in the time before recorded music existed, would they identify what they heard as music?

Music is ultimately decided by the listener, and is not determined instead by the sound or even the context of the sound.Electronic music is not somehow bizarrely different from what has been around for millennia, and intentionality is not a key aspect. While we can view musicians more as curators, they are sharing a vision rather than sharing a definition. The degree to which these visions can communicate across time is unlimited, but not everyone will share those visions in the same way.So, some people would, some people would come to, and some people would never. Fittingly, the same is true in the year 2016.

Why do people tend to think electronic music is bad?

Most people think it sounds like a 3-5 minute song that sounds exactly the same all the way through. A lot of people don't have an ear for the progression changes that happens in electronica. Sometimes it can be subtle, so I can understand. I think it mostly has to do with people not listening to (or appreciating) the details that electronic music has within it.

Electronic vs. Instrumental music?

Please consider and respond to the following statement:

"Because electronic music does NOT require any particular skill with an instrument, it is therefore a more honest expression of emotion, and a truer form of music than instrumental music"

Keep in mind that I do not necessarily claim this statement as my own opinion, so please avoid ad hominem attacks against my own personal taste or intelligence, as it is irrelevant to the question at hand.

BQ: does this technically count as a troll question? I'm actually looking for well thought-out responses.

Why do people say electronic music takes no talent?

The ironic thing is that you won't find a trance producer that hasn't been playing the keyboard since 7 years old, or often has studied music/been classically trained (Andrew Rayel being a popular name that comes to mind). All electronic producers are 'real' musicians if there is such a thing because they ALL play the keyboard. From the biggest names, to your 14 year old bedroom producer. Anyone who doesn't play the keyboard will find it impossible to create a nice melody/fit the track together.

Whilst it's obviously true that anyone can simply press buttons, that doesn't mean you're going to get a good track in the same way just because I have an F1 car doesn't mean I'm going to get a world record time!

Can instrumental-only bands that play electronic music have live concerts?

Kraftwerk were the one of the first to make electronic music and they were a live performance band, also The Prodigy, Mr. Bill & KJ Sawka, Flosstradamus and Disclosure all perform with instruments. There are also solo artists like KiNK and Marc Houle who lean more towards instrumental performance than playing entire tracks consecutively live a DJ would.
