Elephant toothpaste experiment?

I'm doing the elephant toothpaste experiment for science http://www.sciencebob.com/experiments/toothpaste.php but im not able to get any 20 volume liquid hydrogen peroxide. would the experiment still work if i use 10 volume liquid hydrogen peroxide instead? if i use 10 volume, would i have to increase the amount of it to have the same effect, since 10 volume is a little "weaker" than 20 volume? and also, if i use 10 volume instead of what the original experiment asks for (20 volume) would it count as a manipulated variable? or should i just change the materials of the experiment from 20 volume liquid hydrogen peroxide to 10 volume from the start?

What is the elephant's toothpaste experiment?

It is hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposition, with a potassium iodide (KI) used as a catalyst. Firstly, hydrogen peroxide is mixed with liquid soap, then KI is added, making H2O2 decompose:2 H2O2 = 2 H2O + O2. The soap does not react with anything, it just bubbles because of oxygen, produced during decomposition.

I used 35% hydrogen peroxide to make elephant toothpaste. How should I get rid of it?

The elephant toothpaste demo is a really great one. One of my all time favorites. Check outamongst many other videos of elephants tooth paste.The other writers have correctly stated how to get rid of the excess 35% hydrogen peroxide (dilute and it can go down the drain), but the approach is a little boring. I suggest you make more elephants tooth paste. Or, if you get tired of that, here is a link to other demos you can do with hydrogen peroxide 6 fun science experiments you can do with hydrogen peroxide

Help me in elephant toothpaste experiment?? please???

Yes, it's exothermic.

H2O2 -> H2O + 1/2 O2

Use strong peroxide, 30% at least (care), and add a generous squirt of detergent to it.

Usually potassium iodide solution, KI, is used to catalyse the reaction and it proceeds very quickly and exothermically. The oxygen released is caught in the detergent and forms bubbles. Not much more to it than that.

Why do I use Potassium iodide in elephant toothpaste? Can I replace Potassium iodide with something else?

Yes, you can replace it with sodium iodide.
What you can't do is replace the iodide ion.

Where do you buy toothpaste?

Toothpaste brings some very strange questions. “How does elephant toothpaste work”??? What is the toothpaste diet????? Back to your question.I buy most of mine at Amazon, since I like toothpaste with a little more fluoride, I don’t like real minty toothpaste as it burns my oral mucosa, and sometimes I buy toothpaste with Xylitol in it. I also don’t use those with SLS or whitening agents. It’s just easier on Amazon.
