Explain How The Acting In Fawlty Towers Is Similar To Commedia

Blackadder is definitely a series worth watching; but it has nothing to do with either Bean or Fawlty Towers. However, a vastly underrated situational comedy is the Peep Show by David Mitchell and Robert Webb. I can not recommend it enough!

I´m tempted to answer with: "Que?";)I work in a hotel, and although it is a very different kind of hotel (chain), in another country (Germany, so: "Don´t mention the war.";)) and now rather than the Seventies, the situations, the types of guests, the attitudes towards the guests are very close to home. And although I´m not British, judging from other series it influenced (The Office) and movies and such, it seems John Cleese has created almost an archetypal British male with Basil Fawlty.Add to its spot-on observations and of course exaggerations (but only slightly) of it seems all-too-human foibles (in short: brilliant writing) a cast of characters AND performers that is just so rich: John Cleese himself as Basil Fawlty delivers one of the great comic creations of alltime. Manuel (played by Andrew Sachs) is one of the great fictional idiots with his (as a friend of mine once said) unenlightened look and his puzzled/quizzical "Que?". And of course Fawlty´s wife Sybil, played to perfection by Prunella Scales. All in all it´s one of the great comedies/farces, no matter which medium.

Because Fawlty Towers is a work of genius where the genius can clearly be attributed to him - which isn´t to belittle the contributions of Connie Booth and the ensemble. As Mr. Spir rightly says MP is much more of a team effort albeit one where the standout individual work was done by others: the cartoon interludes by Terry Gilliam, the direction by the two Terrys and the songs by (mostly) Eric Idle. Also Fawlty Towers is more British and about Britishness than MP: almost everyone can get and knows MP (mostly because of the movies probably and the song "Always look on..."). But outside of GB, who knows and understands FT (as intimately as the Brits)

Like everything in an interview, think about this request from the interviewer’s perspective. What are they trying to learn? Why did they ask this?As an interviewer, I am looking for several things when I ask about a candidate’s project.Communication skills. Can they describe the project in 30 seconds? In five minutes? Can they effectively answer drill-down questions and convey a good answer about a technical detail?Role in project. Were they a leader, a follower, or a fixture to the side? Does their description and their knowledge align with what they say their role was?Technical savvy. Are they able to talk compellingly about the technology, its limits, its benefits? Can they support their technical choices or talk in a straightforward fashion about poor choices they made? Knowing what they know now, what would they do differently? Before you interview, read over your resume. Make sure you can give a 30-second elevator pitch about your projects, and a five-minute overview of each. Be able to talk about why you chose the project, what your role was, what choices you made, how the result compared to your expectations, and whether or not the project was successful. Be able to talk about the scope of the project, if it was three months or three hours. When you’re asked about the project, make sure you know whether you should give an elevator pitch or a significant overview. If there’s a pause after you describe the project, ask whether they want more information or drill-down on any particular part.

To be able to explain something - which you have understood - eloquently and succinctly to someone, one just needs to start with a strategic framework in the mind, and a working understanding of how information can best be organised and structured in an explanation path. From my own experience in coaching people, information can be best organised and structured as follows, from the explanatory standpoint:- listing or enumeration;- topical;- definition;- classification- process;- chronological;- compare and contrast;- order of importance;- sequence;- spatial;- cause and effect;- problem:solution; For example, when explaining something that is a listing or enumeration, the strategic framework one holds in the head is to use a numerical sequence to explain the information. If it's a process that you are explaining, you know very well that a process always involves stages or steps, in a sequence. That's to say, there's a start-point, an end-point, and a developmental path of transition points in between. With such a strategic framework in the mind, your explanatory path just follows the sequence.

British or American Comedies?

British comedy is far superior. I agree with you about American comedians trying too hard and ultimately messing up what could have been a brilliant quip. For example, Jon stewart and his clan always have good material, but at least 50% of the time give a poor delivery by dragging the joke out. American comedians often seem to do this. The intelligence of most comedy is in its subtletly and slight ambiguity. However, many American comedians virtually explain the joke and why it is apparently so funny, ergo, the whole routine becomes predictable and obvious.
This is painfully apparent in programmes such as Friends.

The other factor which turns many British viewers of American comedy off is the volume of and physical accompaniment to a joke. Brits love self-deprecating, dry humour (hence, the success of programmes such as the office). Therefore, loud, slapstick comedy is rarely seen On British Television nowadays. However, whenever I see American comedies (Friends, etc) I see much louder, physical delivery. Many British people simply don't find this funny. This is probably a reflection of the world-famous british reserve. It doesn't mean that American comedy is always bad. The success of certain American programmes in Britain such as the simpsons could be due to the vast array of characters and types of comedy. All tastes are catered for, be it dry, slapstick, loud, dark.
