External Hdd Formatting

Why does my external hdd show 1.36 TB after formatting it to ntfs?(was fat32 before)?

That lost capacity goes several places. One of them is the difference between formatted and unformatted size. Hard disk manufacturers quote the unformatted size of their products, but you have to format the disk to use it. This process of dividing up a disk into blocks and setting up the tables and such to record and manage each block takes space.
Or the capacity wasn't there to begin with.A KB should be 1024 bytes, not 1,000, because you're dealing with binary (base 2) notation. But when most people, including marketers, say "Kb," they mean 1,000 bytes. Similarly, a megabyte (MB) should be 1,024 KB, not 1,000, and so on. That terminological leakage adds up by the time you get into multiple gigabytes. However your computer reckons such things as disk capacity in binary and to a computer, a KB is 1,024 bytes. This is the standard practice in the industry and even though there has been a lawsuit filed challenging the "truth in advertising" over the 1,024 vs. 1,000 byte debate, it's not likely to change.

Formatting External Hard Drive?

I formatted my 500gb ex HD on my Mac to MS - Dos Fat (32) and plugged it into my PC.

Will it still be read as FAT32 on my PC? I open up the Format options and there is no read of FAT32, only the options NTFS (default) and exFAT. I'm assuming those are the options to format it in, just asking for clarification.

Also, I have started transferring files back into the ex HD thinking it is fat32, and knowing that it is fat32, it only has a max transfer of 4gb, but I easily put in 16.2gb. Is this really a fat32 ex HD?

Can the Playstation 3 read an external HDD formatted as ext2 or ext3?

I'm getting a PS3, and have a 250GB external hard drive I'd like to use as extra storage. I'd prefer to format the drive as something other than FAT32 -- partially because of FAT32's 4GB file size limit (since I have some rather large HD video files I've recorded with my DVR), but primarily because I really don't like having to periodically defrag hard drives. The drive is currently formatted as NTFS, which I know the PS3 can't read, so I'm going to have to reformat it anyway to use it with the PS3. I'm dual-booting Ubuntu (Linux) on my laptop and have the ext3 driver installed for Windows, so formatting the external drive as ext2 or ext3 wouldn't be a problem.

So does anyone know whether a PS3 can use an external drive formatted as either ext2 or ext3?

How to undo Xbox One format on an External Drive?

When external hdd is formatted, you may use data recovery software to scan hdd and restore lost data, see this free step by step guide: http://goo.gl/MNWGH
Take note that you'd better stop using the hard disk before you get back lost files. This is because that when you continue using the hard drive, new files may be written to hdd, which may use the space of lost files, and hence causes files overwritten and make those files unrecoverable.

How can we open a corrupted external hard drive without formatting on Windows 7?

You can't. Once the drive becomes damaged or being corrupted, internal file system won't allows any type of read or write actions. Using recovery programs before formatting is recommended if you've saved something useful on it and don't want it to be fade away permanently. I'd recommend formatting only after recovering your precious files. Else, you might lose the entire stored content. Good luck!!

External hard drive shrunk when formatted?

Sounds like you might have a 300 something gb partition
Download Gparted, (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/)
burn live CD
Boot computer from CD drive (with Gparted disc in the drive and your external hard drive attached)
In the Gparted GUI you will probably see multiple partitions. Delete each partition
Right click the unallocated 1tb and click new
Select NTFS
Click the green check on the top middle
