Finding A Meaning In My Art

Meaning of "You found me" by The Fray?

If you watch the video, I think it goes a bit deeper than that... Like all art, everything is subject to interpretation. But, I get a lot out of the verse:

"In the end, everyone ends up alone
Losing her, the only one who's ever known
who I am, who I'm not, who I wanna be
no way to know, how long she will be next to me"

I think that we all find God in the things and people we love. For an artist, God is in the artwork. For a carpenter, God is in the wood. For each of us, God is in the people we love.

I was recently widowed, and I can tell you that your whole world perspective changes when that happens. The "object" of your desire disappears, and suddenly you see life completely differently. In a way, for me, I now have a closer personal relationship to God the infinite source of love by not focusing on this physical plane.

Many people go through their entire lives lost and insecure, even if they don't acknowledge it. It is sometimes only death that releases us from the bondage of our egos. Sometimes it's someone close to us that dies, sometimes we are not free until our own body dies.

When I first heard this song, my first thought was that it was a suicide note. But after seeing the video, I now think that it's morning the loss of a loved one who died. Or perhaps he's morning the loss of his ego because he's fallen in love and has now found God in a woman's love. I'm sure there's a hundred more ways to interpret it.

There's also an article that provides somewhat of an answer, although the specific details are still vague. Slade says,

"You Found Me is a tough song for me. Its about the disappointment, the heart ache, the let down that comes with life. Sometimes you're let down, sometimes you're the one who lets someone else down. It gets hard to know who you can trust, who you can count on. This song came out of a tough time, and I'm still right in the thick of it. There's some difficult circumstances my family and friends have been going through over the past year or so and can be overwhelming. It wears on me. It demands so much of my faith to keep believing, keep hoping in the unseen. Sometimes the tunnel has a light at the end, but usually they just look black as night. This song is about that feeling, and the hope that I still have, buried deep in my chest."

Can I find the meaning of life through the study of art?

There is no single meaning to life. In fact, there may be no meaning to life at all. I think what is more correct is that in the course of life, we discover things and people and activities that fill our lives with meaning. We each, individually instill life with meaning. Or not. Many people wander around from task to task without giving what they do any particular thought. They do not reflect upon themselves, or their motives. They do not reflect upon their world, or others. This deprives them of the depth of understanding that underlies meaning.Because what is meaning, after all? It is purpose - a connection between action and some result that effects change extending beyond one’s self. Of course, most people hope for their purpose to be positive, for it to result in good and positive change. That is not always the way it works, as we unfortunately know. Some people are malign. Some people make wrong choices, or choices that prove later to be wrong. Others act through non-reflection and create pain and havoc. This is one reason why people who really learn things are more respected than dilettantes - they cause less damage! So, back to your question. If you love art, it can surely be an area which can absorb all the passion and intelligence you wish to throw into it. And since the proper purpose of art is communication, it offers you the potential of not only growing personally but also creating tools for other people to use in their searches for self. As one artist I respect greatly says, “I’m working out my own life. But no matter my subject, I only paint mirrors”. If you choose to, you can be in very deep relationship with others when you work in art. And that can certainly provide a great deal of meaning - and not only for yourself. One clarification. In order to achieve meaning, you must go much further than “study”. You will have to stretch yourself and move into actual creation. It is there that your inner self takes courage, strips its coverings off, explores the depths and then, with even greater courage, chooses to expose the results to the world - making offerings regardless of how they are received. This is how the deepest meaning comes - through a repeated process of stripping, exploration, offering. And then again. And again. Not study.

What does "Dimension" mean in art?

It could mean any of several concepts:
* One of the physical dimensions of an art piece: length, width, height, depth, breadth, weight, etc.
* For a 2D work (painting, photo), the degree to which the viewer experiences depth into the scene
* From cognitive science, the ability for the viewer of the art to experience multiple layers, subtly like different distinct textures, or as vividly as a Magic Eye image. http://www.magiceye.com/
* The amount of discovery when viewing the art, such as finding hidden objects, hidden patterns, or levels of meaning.
