First Time At The Nail Salon

First time going to nail salon, confused?

Shellac and gel polish are nail polishes that use UV light to cure them. They last about 2 weeks and you shouldn't peal them off.
Gel and acrylic nails are fake nails. Gels are slightly better for your nails then acrylics both involve some sanding. Gel nails are more expensive then acrylics but some times it's worth it.
Acrylics go over the whole nail so the whole nail bed has to be sanded down which can damage your nail beds.
Gels are usually a nail tip. less sanding of the nail bed is needed to apply gel tips. Gels are also more durable and flexible then acrylics. Both are set with powder filler and UV light to cure them.
If you don't want to do any more damage to your nails then I would suggest doing gel or shellac polish. Only light sanding needs to be done before they apply the polish.
You can always call up a local nail salon and ask them any questions before you decide on some thing.

First Time Going To Nail Salon?

So tomorrow will hopefully be the first time I'm going to be going to get my nails done at a salon. I've used Kiss press-on nails up to this point. I have a few questions about getting my nails professionally done.

What are acrylic nails? Is it the same as getting a manicure or are they separate things?

Can acrylics be done when getting your toes done or can you only get pedicures? (If they are separete procedures)

On average, which process is the cheapest?

Which lasts the longest? (Asking because I'm going to need them to last about 3-4 weeks)

Sorry if I sound like such a noob but I really am clueless. I have a friend that used to work in a salon but I dont want to sound like I've been living under a rock for my life lol

Thank you for any kind feedback!! :D

First time at a nail salon.?

First, be sure your technician speaks English well. There are a lot of international nail shops that might pose communication difficulties. I would expect it to take in the neighborhood of an hour and a half. Say that you want a French mani/pedi on your natural nails. Tipping is like at a restaurant, 10-20% depending on your level of satisfaction. A pedicure will probably involve a foot soak, trimming of the cuticle and of the nails, a scrub to exfoliate, a massage and polishing. A manicure will involve this, sometimes without the soak and without the exfoliation. Wear a dress or wear slacks that you can roll up out of the way for your pedicure. Prices can vary from place to place, so it's difficult to give you a range. Enjoy!

First time at nail salon and didn't tip? Will they single me out?

This was my first time going to a nail salon. I thought I was only to tip at restaurants. I never tipped at hair salons. I can hardly afford getting my hair done to begin with ($100-$150). Today I went to a nail salon with a lot of different stations. The service was good. My nails are ok, but not fully satisfied. They were very friendly. A tip never occurred me cause I'm use to it. I paid at the front desk and when I was driving away I remembered that I didn't tip and felt really bad. My cost was $55, which is something I can hardly afford. I'd probably frequent nail salons less likely if I have to leave a tip. Will the salon single me out? If I do go back and I will definitely tip. Service industry is hard work.

Since two different people did my toenails and pedicure, should I tip them individually or at the front desk?

Thanks.

How much should I tip at a nail salon?

I cannot believe people have no problem tipping well below what you should. Yes, if you are unhappy, you should tip less. I know you're going with gels, so you probably will not end up bleeding, but if you were to get acrylics and they made you bleed while applying them, that automatically, for me, drops their tip SUBSTANTIALLY.

The other thing to keep in mind is make sure they are actually giving you gels and not acrylics with a gel overlay. If they dip their brush in powder, it's acrylics. If they tell you it's "powder gel", they're lying to you. It's still acrylic. This is something a lot of salons tend to do. They may start with the powder and then do gel on top (acrylic with gel overlay), but these are not gels!! They need to be using gel the entire process. This is more to do with a reputable salon than how much you should tip.

Gels take more skill and are more laborious to apply than acrylics, so in my opinion, the techs should be tipped on the higher end of what's acceptable.

So how much is acceptable? 15% to 20%. For $60, that makes it $9-$12. Think about it. You generally tip a server at a restaurant 15% to 20% and they take your order and bring you your food. A nail tech spends the entire time with you working meticulously on all of your fingers. You absolutely should not tip less than you would in a restaurant.

What should I expect at the nail salon?

I have never had a manicure (professionally done) in my life. My nails are naturally very thin and break easy, so they're short. I'm assuming that means I have to get acrylics...? But I want just something simple and nice - like a French manicure type thing. Can they do that with acrylics, or do they need your real nails for that? Please forgive my ignorance! All help will be appreciated! :)

My aunt went to a nail salon for the first time. After 7 months, she developed some sort of cancer. Can we sue this nail salon?

This sounds like a great question to ask a personal injury attorney.  The ones you see on TV usually focus on car accidents, but there are copious quantities of personal injury attorneys who can assist you.  In many cases, their initial consultation is free.A settlement would account for the medical costs, pain and suffering, and any potential losses which can be articulated due to the cancer.
