FOOD STAMPS - OHIO - Questions re: Eligibility?

@ Kenneth:
Wow, what a poor comment. It was a nice, well thought out response with lots of good info until you threw in the snide birth control comment. Newsflash Kenneth; I'm 32 years old, married for well over 5 years with a three year old son, and both my husband and I work full time jobs that pay well above minimum wage. My only fear was that since I work for a small, family owned company, I have NO maternity leave and we're completely losing my income temporarily. Should we have decided against having more children because of that fact? This was a *planned* second pregnancy. Also, birth control is not free - we paid for it monthly when we were not trying for baby #2. But thanks for the maladjusted input. (fail)

It's awful that those who need assistance temporarily cannot get it, while others ride the welfare wave through life with no attempt whatsoever to better themselves or stand on their own two feet. It's also a shame that people like Kenneth assume t

S.N.A.P. eligibility household question...?

I am a former SNAP caseworker, so I can give you some information. The SNAP guidelines state that a person under the age of 22 cannot claim a separate food stamp household from their parents if they are living in the same home. So until you turn 22, the law will not allow you to have your own separate SNAP benefits while living with your parents. Once you turn 22, you can file for SNAP benefits for yourself and the only stipulation will be that you have to eat and prepare meals separately from your parents, so basically your mom couldn't cook your vegan dishes and serve them with the family dinner, HOWEVER, the agency does not check into this (there is no way to really), so this would not be a real issue.
Also, there are laws in place that prevent a full time college student from getting food stamps, but I don't remember exactly how it worked. The basic premise was that if you could afford to get financial aid and go to school full time, the government wasn't willing to provide you with food. Plus if you have a job, that income would be budgeted as well, so you actually may only end up with a few dollars, if any in food stamps (the maximum for one person is about $150 a month). I have a friend who's only income is 670 a month SSI and he only gets $40 a month because he doesn't pay much in rent or utilities.
Hope this information helps.

Why does food stamp eligibility go by your gross income and not your net income?

Addressing the original question, gross pay is used because net pay can fluctuate widely due to non-essential deductions. For example, you mention that insurance comes out of the paycheck. Even though the insurance may well be (depending on what kind of insurance it is) a wise expenditure, it is optional. Many people (even those who are in tight circumstances) also have their income taxes over withheld to create a large refund. Poverty programs guidelines tend to assume that food, shelter, and clothing come before any optional items.

On the income issue, the numbers presented don't tie to the information. Assuming a 40 hour work week with no overtime, $15/hour would work out to $2,580/month gross. Using the old USDA guidelines for the food stamp program, that would be computed:

15 x 40 = 600/week
600 x 4.3 (the average number of weeks in each month) = $2,580

Can you be eligible for food stamps temp. if wages are being garnished?

My husband is about to have wages garnished from old taxes he did not pay, they are trying to take 50% of his income. If they do that can we be eligible for food stamps? I do not work, 8 mos pregnant and have a two year old already!! Oh and we are in the state of Virginia if that matters....

Is my food stamp eligibility affected if I recently got a DUI?

the question is: if you don't have enough money to afford food so you qualify for taxpayer paid benefits, how is it you have enough money to buy alcohol and then IGNORE the law and operate a car under the influence ? You have STRANGE priorities. If I were the judge, I would SUSPEND your benefits and force you to use your "booze money" to eat food instead.

Where do most people on food stamps live?

In spite of the prevailing stereotypes and assumptions about who uses SNAP Food Stamp benefits the most in the United States, the highest usage is not in Compton, Queens, nor the South Side of Chicago. Instead, a city that is 99.22% white and 95% Republican comes in the lead. Owsley County, Kentucky is a community of about 5,000, residents earning the lowest median household income in the country outside of Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Census. These are some of the very same people that go out and march in tea party rallies, screaming that they don't want their "hard earned tax dollars" going to poor people.

Are green cards holders eligible for food stamps?

Only a sub-set of legal immigrants are eligible (see Food and Nutrition Service Eligibility for details). Some states, my own included, provide state funds to increase legal immigrant eligibility. Note that undocument immigrants are NOT eligible for the program.
