Help! I just found a little sparrow, he can't fly, I don't know what to do with him. He' scared of me...?

You must try to get the baby back to where you found it. If it is fully feathered, it is a fledgling and the parents will still care for it even if you have handled the bird (you may place him in a nearby branch or low tree limb to be out of harms way close to the area he was found). If the bird does not have all it's feathering, it is still a nestling and has fell from it's nest. If the baby is not injured he will be just fine, if you are able to return him to it. DO NOT PUT WATER DIRECTLY INTO THE BIRDS MOUTH, this will cause him to aspirate (inhalation pneumonia or possible drown)! Instead place a few drops of water on the outside of his beak and he will suck it in. See my website: http://www.starlingrescueandcare.bravehost.com for more information on how to care for the bird. If you are unable to place the baby back into the nest immediately or it has been injured, you must hydrate it ASAP! Warm him up first (this is why he is huddled in the corner of the box possibly). A bird has a very fast metabolism and will starve much faster than you could imagine! If it has not fledged yet it could become very week in a matter of only an hour and be beyond hope in a matter of 3 or more! Please see my site as to what you will need to feed the baby as well as emergency situations, care, how to feed, bedding, etc. You may also contact me for any other qquestions at audrarose1977@aol.com .

I found a little sparrow that can't fly and her mother is around, what should I do?

Leave it alone. Even if the chick is on the ground the mother will still try to feed it. However, if you pick it up it will smell of human, and the mother will reject it. Its chances really depend on how near it is to fledging - it won’t survive for long on the ground, but if it is close to being able to fly it may have a chance.

Why do some birds have wings but can't fly, when did they lose the ability to fly?

Why do some birds have wings but can’t fly, when did they lose the ability to fly?I am not too knowledgeable in evolution, but for the most part, birds that can’t fly, can’t fly for very specific reasons. Some are evolutionary defects, and others are amazing adaptations that wouldn’t work anywhere else. For example, the most common bird people today will think of when you say flightless bird is quite possibly the penguin. The penguin doesn’t fly, because in it’s environment, there is not a benefit to be gained from flying that is worth the loss of a different trait. Penguins must be insulated, and be able to stay warm throughout winter, inevitably making them heavier. Weight plays a huge factor in flight as can be easily observed in geese (which we will get to in a moment), and especially turkey. If you take away this added weight, and add the ability to fly (while inadvertently removing their swimming ability), the penguins not only lose their food sources from the water, they will also lose their ability to stay warm through winter, without any added benefit of extra food from say, bugs, because there are not many bugs in Antarctica.Did you know geese, for a certain period in the summer, lose the ability to fly? Yup, its true. Geese molt all of their primary feathers at the same time! This allows them to have an all new, fresh set of primary feathers for their coming flights south, however, this inadvertently creates a very serious temporary weakness that increases the death rate among geese for that period of time. This is something I view as an evolutionary defect, because the geese lose a very important ability for a certain period of time.As to when they lost the ability to fly… well I am not the most knowledgeable on something like this, but I will tell you that we do not know definitively when penguins adapted to swim instead of fly, or when geese started to lose all their primary feathers at the same time.

I found a bird in my pool... its still alive.. please help!!!!?

I just found and took a little sparrow that can't fly yet. It has feathers. With what should I feed him?

If you have not already taken him to a rehabber, or the rehabber has rejected him because he is an English Sparrow, it is easy to feed him. Give him high-protein dog food soaked in water until it is soft. If he has not learned to feed himself yet, open his mouth and stuff a small piece in. Try to get him to open his mouth (gape) for you by gently prodding the corner of his mouth with the food; if that doesn’t work, carefully pry it open. He will very soon learn to gape for you on his own. Keep some of this food in a dish (change it at least twice a day; it goes sour) until he learns to pick at it. Then add seeds on top. Once he can fly strongly, let him go.
