If I recall correctly you get friend codes either by trading or battling with someone a few times or by putting in the code manually from the home menu. I have strongly mixed feelings on the feature that I’m having trouble organizing, even four days after its release. There is no way to evolve a Kadabra, Haunter, Onix, etc. in any of the core Pokemon games without involving some kind of trade, and it’s one of the things that Pokemon desperately needs to fix.This concept, and the concept of “version exclusives” is built on the conceit that players are supposed to play with their friends. Pokemon is supposed to be a social experience, and it’s been like that since the days of Red and Blue. You need to trade with your friends to fill the Pokedex, to “Catch ’em all”, and when you beat the game, you’re supposed to use that fancy Link Cable/Wireless Adapter/etc. to battle and trade with your friends.Unfortunately, a lot of the people who play Pokemon are socially inept losers who play video games so they don’t have to talk to people (me), and these sad sacks can’t fill their Pokedex or get the sweet trade evolution guys like Alakazam or Gengar without buying an entire second gaming system and another copy of the game.
