From These Which Was Your Favorite Obama Moment

Did Obama ever have a "Katrina moment"?

Fox News always describes natural disasters under Obama as his "Katrina moment" or "worse than Katrina", meaning the federal aid was bungled. Did I miss this moment?

What is your favorite Donald Trump moment?

Easily…the Clemson Tigers luncheon. Easily. I would have said the performance during the Republican primaries because he attacked all my least favorite politicians, but no…that luncheon was some Married with Children shit. It’s number one by far.Plus I’m an Alabama fan so…enjoy your slop, Clemson!Trump has the same taste in food that I do. And when you order McDonalds to go and walk just four little blocks from there back to your house, it’s ruined. Not only does it suck when it gets cold, it gets cold FAST. Trump has over a thousand Filet-O-Fishes and Big Macs and fries all laid out like it’s a royal reception, he’s trying to emphasize what a beautiful set-up it is…they would have had a better meal if he had laid the whole spread out on a concrete pavement on a sunny day. Then he wanted credit for paying for this mess out of his own money, which means either 1) it didn’t come out of his own money, or 2) he wants praise for spending a few thousand dollars when he’s worth at least a billion.THEN…oh I love this…THEN, one of his goons applies a phony quote to Trevor Lawrence the quarterback.THEN…the quote, right…the quote was something like “Democrats may complain it’s not organic vegan, but I for one love America”.No that was beautiful. Best Trump moment ever.

What are some of the best Obama moments?

Tracing his ascension from Illinois senate candidate to two-term President:His 2004 DNC speech delivered an inspiring and unifying message moment in an otherwise bitter and divisive campaign (where the phrase Swift Boating was coined):And, after he won the New Hampshire primary in 2008, he reinforced his positive message of hope, just as the recession was beginning, with "Yes We Can":It will be very hard for him to top that night in November 2008, though.  That was the one thing Romney and the Republicans got right about Obama in 2012; in the depths of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression where the light at the end of the tunnel was not yet visible; after 8 years of failed leadership during the Bush Administration; with two wars underway and no end in sight; he addressed Chicago and the nation with:"If there is anyone out there who still doubts that America is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer."As President, his speech at the dedication of the MLK memorial:"We forget now, but during his life, Dr. King wasn’t always considered a unifying figure.  Even after rising to prominence, even after winning the Nobel Peace Prize, Dr. King was vilified by many, denounced as a rabble rouser and an agitator, a communist and a radical...Our work is not done.  And so on this day, in which we celebrate a man and a movement that did so much for this country, let us draw strength from those earlier struggles.  First and foremost, let us remember that change has never been quick.  Change has never been simple, or without controversy.  Change depends on persistence.  Change requires determination."The 2012 campaign was very bitter and divisive on both sides.  But, Obama's victory speech was gracious and promised: "Tonight in this election, you, the American people, remind us while our road has been hard, while our journey has been long, we have picked ourselves up, we have fought our way back, and we know in our hearts that the united states of America – the best is yet to come."I, for one, look forward to what can be accomplished with Barack Obama governing for "FOUR MORE YEARS!"

What is your favorite Anthony Bourdain moment?

Several years ago my wife and I travelled to Israel with some friends of ours, Teri and Steve. While in Jerusalem, I was really excited to go and see the Western Wall, and I quickly left my wife and friends in the plaza as soon as we arrived. After spending some time at the Western Wall, I headed back to the plaza and was shocked to find my wife standing there with Anthony Bourdain! He was there filming his Israel episode of “Parts Unknown,” and my wife had met him and asked him wait until I returned so that I could meet him. Anthony was very friendly and we chatted for a several minutes, then we took some pictures. My impression was that he was a down to earth, nice guy. When we returned to the States, we watched the Parts Unknown episode when it came out, and sure enough, you can see my wife Tracy and my friends Teri and Steve walking across the plaza at the beginning of the episode! Here’s a picture of my wife Tracy with Anthony when we met him at the Western Wall! RIP Anthony, you will be missed.

What Obama moment makes you cringe?

They’re building his Presidential Library in Chicago.Barack Obama Presidential Center - WikipediaIt’s not done yet. In fact, I think they’ve stopped before they even got the first pipes in the ground. There’s some sort of controversy or something about where it is or who’s paying for it or whatever. But, sooner or later, it will be there, which means, if I’m still teaching then, I’m going to be chaperoning field trips there. What makes me cringe is the thought of teaching students about Obama like it’s ancient history, when I was very much alive for and remember all of his presidency. Nothing makes you feel old like seeing something in your students’ history books that you remember like it was yesterday. One of the sentence examples in a new English textbook I have says something like: “I bought a new Chumbawamba CD at the music store last week.” I had to explain to my students that Chumbawamba was a band with a hit song in the 90s (when I was very much alive and I remember their song clearly), and CDs are these physical disks that contain digital information, like songs or videos, and you used to be able to buy them in stores in the mall. Most of my students have heard of CDs, but never actually bought one. They just stream all of their music and download their games via Steam.Anyway, I’ve lost count of how many field trips I’ve chaperoned to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library in Springfield, IL. It’s a cool place. I recommend it. But it’s all about “frontier Illinois” and The Civil War and things that happened 120+ years before I was around. It’s history to everyone there, not just the young people.Sooner or later, there will be people walking around the Obama Presidential Library in Chicago… who were not alive when he was president. And I’ll be walking around there with them, making sure they don’t try to break away from the group to make out with each other or do other cringey middle school type things.
