Which sentence is correct, “he behaves as if he was rich” or “as if he were rich”?

'As if he were rich' is correct. That tense is known as the subjunctive. The reason confusion arises is that the English in the UK have largely stopped using it, and will almost always say, 'as if he was rich' which is strictly speaking bad grammar. However the mistake has become so widespread and widely accepted that to say 'were' makes you sound pedantic and pretentious to some, in the UK at least.I suspect it's to do with the education system in the UK that for decades encouraged pupils to express themselves freely rather than 'discouraging' them by correcting their grammar or syntax. The Yanks, for the most part, still use the subjunctive correctly.

Why is augmented/virtual reality booming?

Is it?The statement posed by the question does not appear true to me. There is a lot of discussion among mostly technical people and investors, and massive investments in platforms like Apple’s ARKit. However the sense of urgency that would be indicative of booming in terms of an actual mainstream audience … simply is not there, yet.The reason for the lack of adoption from my perspective is that there is zero correlation of AR or VR to storytelling. The mistake developers make is to assume what they/we are interested in, is what everyone else will be interested in.Pokemon Go was successful because … everyone knew Pokemon. Therefore, people engaged with the product because the story was compelling, the experience of being in the world engaging with other people was compelling, and importantly, technology was invisible. Yet the narrative in the developer-centric tech press was that there was “huge demand for AR”. No. That is not correct. Until “AR” and “VR” are the background neither will become the “norm”.The crux of the issue here in my humble opinion is storytelling. That is the what moves humans to engage. Successful technological shifts happen when they understand and adapt to human behavior. One of my favorite quotes is by the architect Louis Kahn, who found his style later in life after spending time in Rome and observing how ancient structures withstood the test of time:“What is has always been, what has always been will always will be”.Likewise, technology, must fit into human behavioral patterns that have stood the test of time. Humans will always choose human, joyful, toy-like and simple. To me, AR and VR at best will be what special effects was to Hollywood in say, the 80s. Special effects assisted mainstream storytellers like Steven Spielberg tell enduring stories that became popular with mainstream audiences. The big question is not about the technology, it is about how the technology can do storytelling. “Gee Wiz” is not a business model.Technology in and of itself, is not interesting to non-tech people. That is why instruction manuals have never been best-sellers ... the truth is something like 99.8% PEOPLE WANT TO PLAY; 0.2 % OF PEOPLE WANT TO BUILD.)
