Why do British lawyers and judges wear wigs in the courtroom?

Barristers (the court advocates) of the legal profession wear wigs in court. The solicitors (the non-trial lawyers) don’t — because they don’t appear in court. Why do barristers wear wigs in court?Tradition.British or English courts started wearing robes to bring in a sense of formality and solemnity to the proceedings since the 14th century. The wig (also called a peruke) started being worn from the 17th century for the same reason.Yet the UK has been breaking with tradition. Since around 2007, British lawyers and judges have ceased wearing the white horsehair wigs in civil, family and other non-criminal cases. In ex-British countries, their courts tended to follow the English practice of gowns and wigs. However, most of those in warmer climates have dropped the use of wigs for both judges and counsels — understandably so.In European countries and Civil Code jurisdictions, judges wear robes and sometimes a cap (or usually no headdress). While Britain was breaking with tradition, some countries are going the opposite direction. For instance, courts in China have stipulated more formal civilian-looking dress codes. Black gowns with a front red stripe are increasingly replacing the military-looking tunics of judges. Alas! no wigs in the Chinese courts.
