Geology Or Engineering Life Decision Help

Geology vs Petroleum Engineering?

I'm a semi-retired geologist - I can't fully retire because I love geology too much LOL. I had a great full time career primarily as an engineering geologist - I have had a lot of different roles (Hydro Dams, Coal Mining, Petroleum Geology, Geostatistics). In my retirement I volunteer as a researcher at a museum of paleontology and operate a geo-tourism business.

Here are some things for you to think about.

The fundamental difference between geology (ie science) and engineering (applied science) is that pure science seeks explanations, engineering applies these explanations. (Why? versus How?)

Geology can be descriptive and interpretive while engineering is quantitative (math). Some say geology is a soft science compared to the "hard sciences" like math, physics and chemistry. Geology is becoming more quantitative (probably because of the rise of the computer).

What training and profession you choose depends on your personality, skills and strengths. However it is important to find a career that has openings, opportunities and a future. You need to think ahead 4 to 7 years to when you graduate and even further into the future (the rest of your life).

The petroleum business may not have a great future. We are past the peak of production. Global warming is encouraging alternate energy - future good jobs will be in "green" business.

Personally I would recommend Geology or Geological Engineering. Make sure you get a good variety of courses so that you have flexibly and can adapt to a changing world.

Best of luck. Email me if you would like any further advice or info.

Double Major in Petroleum Engineering And Geology?

it's a whole lot more than 3-4 courses. I've already worked it out. It's 42 additional hrs. 22 of those are at the senior level. I don't think it's quite the same as a ChemE/chemist or MechanicalE/physicist because these two majors can set you on two different paths. While the two are related, a PetE cannot work as a geologist. Most oil companies require their geologists to have a MS or a PetE w/ a bachelors sureley couldn't do that work. I had over 30 hrs coming into the university with AP test and what not. I'll be in summer school every summer but one. I think the 3-4 class thing you are talking about is about a minor. If I wanted a minor I'd only have to take 4 additional classes (12 hrs)

How to become a marine biologist?

okaay, im 14 going to be 15 in 2 months, and i am really into marine life.
i want to live in floridaa and work at seaworld as a marine life rescuer
could you tell me the best colleges for this and things that i should take in high school, ill be a freshman this year, and i need to know the kinds of things i should know and maybe some books that i could purchase that have facts about marine life
helpp?!? thanks a bunch!

What is it actually like being a geological engineer?

Being a geological engineer means to use different geological features present on earth for the development and progress of human civilization, for example predicting the possible time and place of an earthquake or help civil engineers to use which land and which type of rock for the establishment of a dam or a road etc.During the 2nd world war, a massive destruction of the infrastructure occurred in the countries involved in the war. Old dams, roads and bridges were collapsed by the impact of bombardment. After the war, governments began the large projects to rebuild the infrastructure including new dams and bridges. But they faced a hurdle which was the repetitive collapse of the dams and bridges. By then there were only civil engineering and architectural engineering, which were only focused on the development of design and construction of the dams. They were unaware of the characteristic behavior of the rocks which are building material for dams, roads, bridges etc. That’s why they had to bear the loss of dams and investment. To address this problem, a separate field of engineering was established and named as Geological Engineering. So, the primary work of a geological engineer is to study the varying behavior of the rocks and minerals and then to apply the obtained data for the development of different structures. Moreover, as a geological engineer you study the glaciers, wind deposits, river deposits, flooding, mountain building, seismology which is related to the Earthquakes, stratigraphy which is related to the layers on the hills and mountains, Global Imaging System (GIS) and many more.

What are some options for a biology student other than medicine after class 12 in India?

Not all students who choose Medical stream as a career option after 12th pcb stream wish to become doctors or dentists. In Indian society, it is an auto assumed scenario. If a child opts for 12th science stream (PCB), society starts to believe and see them as future doctors. Due to this false impression, in most of the cases, students are forced to appear for medical entrance exams even if they don’t wish to. Sometimes, it is misleading as students themselves also start believing that they must become a doctor, or dentist. Lack of professional guidance results into disasters as when students realize that they are just running behind the crowd, they have already lost good amount of time. Here, I am shifting the focus from MBBS and BDS to “OTHER CAREER OPTIONS in LIFE SCIENCES” and listing out some of the possible career options for 12th Science Stream students who like to study life sciences but do not wish to become doctors.Students with Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at 10+2 can opt for career in Life Sciences. If you are choosing career in Life Science, then some of the courses that can be considered for graduation are: 1. Bachelor courses (B. Sc.) in core Life Science subjects, that include specialization in Zoology, Botany, Geology, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Biomedical engineering, Genetics or Page on b.sc General.2. Bachelor courses in Applied sciences: Biotechnology, Forensic Sciences and criminology, Bioinformatics3. Bachelor course in Pharmacy (B Pharma)4. Bachelor of Science : Nursing5. Bachelor of Science in Agriculture: Agricultural Meteorology, Agronomy6. Bachelor of Science in Food Technology7. Bachelor of Science in Forestry and Wood Technology8. Bachelor of Science in Industrial Fish and Fisheries9. Bachelor of PhysiotherapyFor more details on College and Course Information you might like to read- Career Options in Life Sciences after 12thJob Prospects and Career Options in Life Sciences

What specialization in geology must be done to be a planetary geologist?

Astrogeology is not my field but I am sure of a few things.   Most planets and asteroids are bombarded with meteorites, so the dynamics of planetary motion and Impacts.  Volcanology because immature planets are covered with volcanoes and large impacts cause volcanic activity.   Sedimentology to interpret surface features such as bedded sediments and erosion caused by ancient rivers.  Atmospheric science to understand the composition of an atmosphere, if present.  Isotope geochemistry if rocks are retrieved from the surface.  Remote sensing (multispectral imagery) to interpret satellite imagery.  Spectroscopy to interpret sensor data from landers.

Is it a good idea to study petroleum engineering?

First of all, I think it's wonderful you've found a degree combining all the things you enjoy. Congratulations!I've only been working in the oil and gas industry for about six months, so my answer might not provide much insight industry wise. Mehran Janghorbani made great points in his answer [Mehran Janghorbani's answer to Is it a good idea to study petroleum engineering?]. I will try my best to give perspective as a "fresh" hire. The people telling you it isn't worth studying petroleum engineering because of the oil prices? Clearly, bullshit.Oil prices fluctuates all the time. Recently, A colleague told me over lunch how he spent the 2008 oil price decline working, feeling guilty because some of his friends at work got laid off. When the oil price climbed and finally stabilised, the company re-hired them back. He laughed after recounting this and said the few people who were laid off recently will most certainly get their job back, and there is nothing to worry about. Of course, that could be just my employer; I can't speak for other companies. When I first decided to study geology many years ago, many were surprised when their comment of "Oh, the oil and gas industry pays well!" was met with a scowl. I didn't want to study geology because I want to get paid well. I want to study it because I want to satisfy my curiosity of rocks. I even thought of getting a master degree in engineering geology. People around me all thought I finally gave in and entered the oil and gas industry because I had no choice. They didn't know I'm still studying geology everyday - from an engineer's perspective! I love every moment of it.So, is it a good idea to study petroleum engineering still? If you think it's definitely something you will enjoy the next five, ten, twenty years, go for it. Oil price may suck now, but it won't suck forever.Hope this helps!

Regret majoring in hydrogeology/aqueous geochemistry and need opinions!?

You have already invested alot of time and money in your education. I think you're burnt out. Clear your mind, give your self a time to rest and relax. Go away for a few days in a place where you'll find peace of mind and after that, go back and think thoroughly of the decision you'd have to make.
Don't forget to take into consideration your financial status and all the hardwork you've had after all the years in geochemistry before taking any steps.

Good luck!

Which subject is better for ISC, computer science or geology as optional?

You like geology but it has no scope other than using Geology for BA.But if you take Computer Science as optional, after ISc, your option for BCA, and BSc in Computer will always be open. Future is Software technology.Even a person who did B.Tech in Civil Engineering, got job in software company lke WIPRO, INFOSYS, etc……Taking Computer science is good, go with your familyNEVER FOLLOW LESSONS OF 3 IDIOTS BLINDLY..That was film, its real life…Today and future, eveything will be software based, so taking computer science as optional will be excellent and computer science is very interesting.Java, Dot net, C,C++ are computer languages and they all are interesting. The love and interest you using geology ,use it in computer science and tha will be beneficial and more interesting and creative than geology….THE LAST DECISION IS WITH YOU.Its your life and what decision you take will ultimately affect you,not to your parents………..
