What is transit visa?

A transit visa may serve several purposes depending on the immigration law of the country of issue.

Examples:

1. A foreigner who wants to arrive at Lucknow Airport on an international flight and who wants to use land travel to reach Nepal needs to apply for an Indian transit visa which is valid for up to 3 days.

2. An Indian citizen who wants to travel to the UK can be issued a transit visa for Dubai which enables him to visit Dubai enroute for an intermediate stay from 8 up to 96 hours.

3. An Indian citizen who wants to visit Kosovo must get an Airport Transit Visa if his flight has an intermediate stop in the Czech Republic, France, Germany, or Spain. The visa is required even if the passenger only changes airplanes and actually does not enter the country.

4. An Indian citizen who wants to visit the Caribbean must apply for a UK transit visa if his flight from India arrives at London Heathrow airport and his connecting flight departs from London Gatwick airport. The transit visa is valid for up to 48 hours.

5. A Mexican truck driver who must deliver goods in Canada needs a U.S. transit visa in order to cross the United States to get from Mexico to Canada. A stay in transit can be granted for up to 29 days on each entry..

Do Indians need a transit visa for Frankfurt?

EDIT: Following answer is solely based on limited information I collected while my travel to India on a valid H1B visa. Every individual’s experience could be different although his/her visa situation matched mine. Do not consider this answer as a rule. I encourage you do your own research before travel.I was searching for similar information for my recent travel to India through Frankfurt. I called the German consulate for info and here is what Ihave conluded from my experience. If you hold indian passport and have more than one stop (Frankfurt- Munich), you need a transit (schengen) visa.If you hold Indian passport with and only have one stop (Frankkfurt), you dont need s Schegen visa but you need to have a valid US visa (H1B).If you hold an indian passport and your H1B is expired, you are not allowed to travel through some of the Schegen states. Germany (Frankfurt) does not recongnise valid H1B extension as a vaid US visa.I have attached couple of pictures and a link here, Please take a look for more details.German Missions in the United States

Do I need a transit visa on an Indian passport while transiting via Frankfurt or Munich?

In your case you may need transit visa on return trip.Transit visa are not required if transiting via only one Schengen airport. If your itinerary involves more than one Schengen airports, then you would need transit visa, regardless of the duration of layover. Make sure you fulfill the immigration requirements of your final destination.Visa requirements for Indian nationals passing through German airports are unfortunately extremely difficult as well as complicated to be understood by many passengers. It is not uncommon that innocent Indian nationals, who are well respected in other countries and have decent profile with no criminal history, face criminal charges of invading the national borders of Germany and even face arrests and criminal cases at the German airports. The best approach to avoid all this trouble is to avoid buying tickets from carriers with stopovers in German airports, if you hold Indian passport.Transit visas requirements of Germany have not much evolved since the era of colonialism. While India is an enormous economy with rich manpower, Indian nationals are continued to be seen with an eyes of suspicion at German Airports. Many travelers are elderly and have little or no understanding about German transit visa requirements while traveling to or from North America or UK. Indian nationals continue to be (mis)treated in the same way as some other selected countries (such as Iraq, Sudan etc) affected for terrorism or related issues.Lufthansa, one of the major carrier with significant size of business in India, has not been able to protect the interest of its passengers. Similarly, the Ministry of External Affairs of Indian government has failed to raise this issue with the German counterpart and as a result hundreds of thousands of Indians continue to get harassed at the German Immigration controls at the airports.

Do U.S. green card holders need a U.K. transit visa?

It is always hard to answer visa requirement question if the asker does not state the citizenship of the traveler. Citizen of certain countries need a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) even if they do not leave the transit area of a British airport and they do not pass British immigration.

Holders of a valid U.S. visa or a valid USA I-551 Permanent Resident Card issued on or after 21st April 1998 are exempt from the DATV requirement.

Notes:
1. A valid U.S. immigrant visa packet (form 155A/155B) is a valid visa for DATV exemption purposes.
2. An expired I-551 Permanent Resident Card issued on or after 21 April 1998 when accompanied by an I-797 letter issued by the Bureau of Citizenship authorising its extension, exempts the holder from the DATV requirement.
3. Holding either an I-512 Parole letter or an I-797C (Notice of Action) instead of a valid U.S. visa; or a Transportation Letter instead of a valid U.S. Permanent Residence Card issued on or after 21 April 1998; or a U.S Visa Foil endorsed, "NOT A VISA. FOIL PREPARED AT DHS REQUEST" does NOT qualify for exemption from the DAT visa requirement.
4. Holding a valid travel document with a U.S. ADIT stamp worded – “Processed for I-551. TEMPORARY EVIDENCE OF LAWFUL ADMISSION FOR PERMANENT RESIDENCE VALID UNTIL…. EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZED” does NOT qualify for exemption from the DAT visa requirement.

How to visit poland on the way to USA?

Q. do i need to get a transit visa for Germany and Poland consecutively?
A. Yes you will, although you could take a chance as Poland will become a full Schengen member this Friday and in practise you will be able to travel by train all the way to Poland without being stopped, but I would not trust this.

*Quote* "and then travel by train to Poland which hardly 2-3hrs journey"

I think you are being a bit optimistic here as it depends where you are going to in Poland. see below:
