Good Books Or Websites About Midwifery

Any books similar to Call the Midwife?

I read a book recently which is also set in Poplar where Call the Midwife is set and deals with the social conditions of the time (Late 19th and early 20th centuries). It's about the social reformer, Will Crooks. He spent time in the Poplar Workhouse as a poor lad and when he grew up was responsible for reforming and humanizing the workhouse system. He also became the first ever Labour Mayor in London and played a large part in getting the British their national old age pensions. He was a local hero in the east end, especially Poplar and when he died thousands of people lined the streets of London to pay their last respects. He was quite the character and very Dickensian.

Do men make good midwives?

In UK women don't have gynaecologists, they see a regular doctor for any issues and generally ask for a woman. Normally the GP practice nurse does the smear tests. If a woman does have issues she would be referred to a specialist then. In America is a completely different health care set up

To be a midwife you need to pass the various courses and have experience and there's absolutely nothing different for a woman doing it or a man doing it. Everyone has to learn somewhere and its obvious to say that when it comes to gaining your experience some women would be hesitant for a man to deal with things. That's life and there's no point hiding that or saying it'll never happen because it will.

BUT that should not let that put you off!

When it comes to it most women want a professional with a good bedside manor who knows what they're talking about and can tell them what's going to happen and how you will help them. As long as you can do that you will be a fantastic midwife and there will be many many women that you'll help who will appreciate you for what you've done for them and the fact you're a man won't be an issue
