Has Anyone Volunteered At The African Conservation Foundation

Where should I volunteer abroad?

I might be replying late to this question, however, I hope my reply does help seekers. :)You could explore this link http://www.betterworldinternatio... for an internship. I joined this team as an intern and I work full time now. Its an online opportunity and you get to work with a global team (people from Poland, Hungary, USA, Italy, UK, Russia, India). The work is diverse and super cool and shares awesome courses for your holistic development. You would be able to see your growth first month from the first month itself. Trust me, in my job experiences, the growth was so slow paced. The results are quick and visible and my skill-set has expanded. We don’t realize what all we are capable to doing. Do check it. :)

What is the best Orangutan conservation project?

There are a lot of Orangutan projects out there but the key is to find one which has the Orangutans best interests at heart. Centres and sanctuaries which encourage contact with the Orangutans should be a no go as this discourages natural behaviour in the apes meaning they would struggle should they ever be released, and there is a much higher risk of illness spreading from human to orangutan. Something as simple as the common cold in a human could be deadly to an orangutan. The Great Projects have a strict no contact policy for volunteers when it comes to these Great Apes, and our projects all follow this rule. We work alongside both BOSF and IAR in our attempts to properly rehabilitate the orangutans. If you would like to find out more about the projects then please look here for more info.

What is the best organization to donate for animals?

Your local animal shelter. They are always in desperate need of donations. You don't even have to donate money, they usually have a list of needs and volunteers needed. My daughter used to work at the local humane society, she worked there for 2 years. She didn't do it for money, because the pay sucked. She told me to never ever donate to the ASPCA or USUS. The money never trickles down to the local shelters. Both have poor ratings on HumaneWatch and Charity Watch. Most of the funding for local shelters comes from the local government and local donations. Our local humane society had poor leadership even when my daughter worked there 10 years ago. She told me her boss made a hefty salary but only showed up for photo ops. The rest of the time she was usually home getting drunk and calling in to yell at the staff. They eventually lost their funding from the county and cities because they wanted more county and city funding without allowing equal representation on their board. Huge red flags went up. Our county has opted to form its own shelter and now the local humane society doesn't accept strays or animals at all.So do your research before donating, even to local shelters.

How do I apply or train to foster a tiger cub?

In the future I would like to foster tiger cubs until they are old enough to go to zoos or what-have-you. My best guess is zoos or a wildlife preservation. I would hopefully like to get on the list to do this, but I know that I would need training & permits. (And LOTS of space!) Anyone know where I should start?

Which wildlife organizations are the most effective and which are the least effective in terms of their impact on wildlife preservation?

Well, I am obviously biased. 30 years ago, because I was dissatisfied with what wildlife conservation organisations were doing, I helped set up the World Land Trust, which I still run. I believe that we are one opf the most cost effective — i.e for every £/$ doonated, we achive more real conservation than almost any other organisation. A claim that is strongly endorsed by many professionals in the field, including Sir David Attenborough. It is invidious for me to pick out which are the most ineefective, because that does depend on how you measure it. Some spend vast amounts of money on fundraising, but they may also raise lots and spend it well. But in my personal view those focussed on single species, particularly the big, charismatic species are often the most inefective from a conservation point of view. I have written blogs about how to evaluate charities in the past, but a close read of a charity’s accounts is always a good starting point. See how much is spent on admin, then ‘education’ then ‘outreach’. And finally how much actually goes to the conservation in the field. And the least effective are generally ‘rescue centres’. Many of which have little or no conservation value. [Not all however; some are designed as rehab’ centres to get wildlife back into the wild asap].Finally always look at who is running an organisation, make sure they have competent staff, and if they have high profile Board members ask them what they know about the day to day. Lots of people are flattered to be on a Board, but don’t actually know much about the organisation (surprisingly).
