Having A Shoulder Surgery Soon Anyone Able To Answer Some Questions

Has anyone had AC joint shoulder surgery on the side with lymphedema?

Hi Jo

I can't answer your question as I have not had surgery on my arm but I have had members that have had all kinds of surgeries, I run Lymphland Online Support Group, http://www.lymphland.com, on the front page is the url for the Yahoo group, if you'd like to join, we'd welcome you and you could post your question, I'm sure someone along the way will be able to help with an answer.

I think it could go either way, surgery can worsen lymphedema from the trauma, then scar tissue, but on the other hand it could be the degeration is helping to block flow too so it could improve.

We have a chat coming up Saturday at 1pm Eastern, if you are interested you could pop in and ask questions then. The link is on the Lymphland website and also on the Yahoo group site, on the website you'd go to the directory top right, click on it, it brings up an alphabetized menu, click on CHAT, and it will bring up a page, then down further is enter, click on enter, type your name and you are in.

Maybe we'll see you there. Take care.

How soon after shoulder surgery should I start playing sport? I had a rotator cuff repair done in June 2016

After your motion and your strength have recovered your biggest concern should be protecting the repair to decrease the risk of reinjury. Recurrent rotator cuff tears are a big issue. You ask a very important question…There was a great paper a number of years ago (1) that showed we were probably allowing our rotator cuff repair patients to become too active too soon. The paper showed that most retears occurred between 10–26 (!!!) weeks after a repair. The average time was 19 weeks. The bottom line is the first three months should not involve much strengthening. After that the strengthening should be light and progress very slowly. I would not consider return to the gym, etc until well after 6–8 months. Otherwise the risk of developing a recurrent tear is unacceptably high.[1]Footnotes[1] Time to failure after rotator cuff repair: a prospective imaging study.

Can I have shoulder surgery if I am on my period?

Can I do pull-ups if I had shoulder surgery in the past?

Hey there!I will tell you my experience with shoulder injuries and training because a couple of years ago I had a complete shoulder dislocation and now I’m fully recovered experiencing no pain or discomfort at all.I had no surgery, yes, but recovery process isn’t that different.First of all, always talk to your doctor, physical therapist or medical care specialist before you decide to try something new. If you feel any pain, discomfort, popping, clicking, etc, describe it to them very detailed.Ask yourself some questions and decide where to start from:How much time has gone since the surgery? How much time did the surgeon tell you’ll need to recover completely?Have you started with physical therapy? If not, when could you start with it. For example I started 30 days after my injury when I stopped wearing shoulder orthosis. I wore it non stop for 30 days in day and night. Along with the physical therapy I did physio therapy. What’s your shoulder range of motion?Do you have any pain or discomfort while performing your daily tasks? I’m not talking about exercising. If you have finished the physical therapy cycle, have achieved full range of motion and have green light from your doctor to start working out, I would advise you to start working with personal trainer and to begin with some shoulder mobility exercises.I, for example, started with waiter walking, farmers walking and hanging on a bar. At first I wasn’t able to hang more than 2–3 seconds, but I progressed really fast, because I was consistent. You can always start with some easier progressions to pull ups. But, please, keep in mind the following! The bar is not the best friend to people with shoulder problems. A-l-w-a-y-s strive for perfect technique and ask your trainer to watch you while you’re performing any exercises. It took me only 5 months to start working out in the gym. May be 8 months to get in really good shape and to regain some strength. :) No I advocate balance in everything and try to spread my experience. If you need any additional info, for example, what else I did, what supplements i had used, etc, just tell me :)

SAD/DCR surgery on shoulder?

Having this done pretty soon and i was curious if anyone had this done and was able to return to tennis? i had a SAD on my right arm last year and it helped the impingement syndrome but unfortunately when i returned to tennis i was not able to serve without alot of pain so i toughed out the spring season.. we decided it was my a/c that was causing most of the discomfort so im having a SAD/DCR done... pain wise im expected the same as last year which is only bad for a couple days but any comments would be cool

Two doctors have told me they won't do surgery on my shoulder if I can't pass a nicotine test. Are all doctors going to say that?

I wouldn't say ALL doctors. However think of it this way the joints shoulders, elbow, knees don't have excellent blood flow. Smoking impeeds the oxygen reaching the damaged tissue, there's a higher risk of surgical site infection among smokers vs nonsmokers, tissues that do not perfuse well do not heal well and take much much longer to heal. The surgeon who does the surgery may have the annoyance of a more complicated and lengthy healing process to deal with and the ADDED risk of having a less than desirable outcome of performing surgery on a smoker vs a non-smoker. If it's a young surgeon theyre going to want to strive for excellent numbers no blips on the radar or complications among surgical patients. You could be perceived as a blip on their radar. You're best bet is to try to go to an older more experienced surgeon who may not be as stringent on your smoking history/condition. Alternatively you could look into smoking cessation programs to help you quit. But if you cannot possibly quit just know that you are a risky patient some would not touch whereas if you still need surgery try to go with someone older who may be looking to retire soon and may not be as picky as to surgical candidates. Good luck!

Why does my shoulder still hurt a year after having the last of 2 rotator cuff surgeries?

Perhaps your muscles are still in the process of healing. Different people recover at different paces. If you can, maybe it is best to do some simple stretches for your shoulders and upper back to relax your tight muscles and improve your blood circulation. Here are 5 of the best and most common stretches for your upper back.Standing Wall StretchStand straight in front of a wallRaise your arms until your palms are touching the wallKeeping your arms straight, push the wall until you feel a comfortable pull in your upper backHold this pose for 10-15 secondsGently release back to your original positionRepeat 8 timesArm SlidesStand straight against a wall with your arm at your sides and palms facing outSlide your arms to your sides but keep them leaned back on the wallSlide your arms as high as you can reach while still keeping them flat on the wallHold this pose for 12-15 secondsGently release back to your original positionRepeat 5 timesScapular SqueezeSit down at the edge of a chair with your feet flat on the floorSqueeze your shoulder blades together until you feel a comfortable pull in your upper backHold this pose for 8-10 secondsGently release back to your original positionRepeat 16 timesButterfly WingsSit down with your feet flat on the floorTouch your left shoulder with your right palmTouch your right shoulder with your left palmWith your palms still touching your shoulders, pull your elbows back until you feel a comfortable pull in your upper backHold this pose for 10-15 secondsGently release back to your original positionRepeat 3 timesArm ReachGet down on your knees and let your palms touch the floorWhile looking at the floor, raise your left arm forward, parallel to the floorRaise your right leg backward, also parallel to the floorHold this pose for 8 secondsGently put your left arm and right leg downRepeat on the other sideRemember not to force yourself if doing these stretches hurt your shoulders more. Why is my shoulder still sore 9 months after a rotator cuff surgery for a small tear?

Good question! What did your Orthopedic Surgeon say when you posed this exact same question? Why do I ask you this, OP? Because I don’t think, I know he would have asked a series of pertinent questions, would have done a physical examination of your shoulder, and possibly would have ordered a test or two.So now explain how any of us strangers on the internet are going to examine you? Are you actually going to answer a series of questions peppered at you in a back-and-forth ad nauseam online dialogue? I have never seen that happen here on Quora! You’re not going to obtain a reliable answer here, i.e. seeking a 2nd medical opinion here is not a realistic option.Good luck!

How long can you wait before having surgery for an ankle fracture? Can you wait a day or two?

I see by other answers there were/are details in your question I'm not seeing.Just based on the straight question of waiting for a couple days-yes, you have to.There's a hell of a lot of swelling that occurs over the first 72 hours that distorts the tissue and blood vessels, making it very hard to identify anything. Sure, there's tissue and there's bone, but there's nerves and lymphatic vessels too. They're a bitch to see in a confusion of swollen tissue.I waited three days before even seeing the surgeon who scheduled surgery several days later. I was splinted, non weight bearing and had pain control. There was nothing more than the tincture of time to be done. But my surgery was an open reduction of an internal fracture. There's so many flavored of broken bones, it's hard to make generalizations.Always get a second opinion (from a different group than your surgeon if possible) if it feels wrong. But waiting for a few days after the initial fracture is standard. Rest, ice, elevation as well as splinting and Norco are the best way to get through the first days of inflammation. Rest and heal.

Shoulder surgery arthroscopy??

Ask your anestehsiologist for an intescalene block. It's an injection of numbing medicine around the nerves that go to the shoulder. Surgery can be done with the block alone, but many times we put the block in, and then do a light general anesthetic. The block gives you 12-24 hours of pain relief, which should be enough time to get you home and on some oral pain meds.

What I've heard is that the rehab afterward is the tough part. Has to be done, though.

Best of luck to you!
