Health insurance problems for an 18 year old?

I was kicked off of my parents insurance when I turned 18. It was a different one then my parents were on so they didn't keep me on it. The problem is I have a serious auto immune disease and I need insurance because I have frequent blood tests' doctors appointments, and prescriptions to get. I haven't been doing any of the above except getting medication and I think my levels are wrong so I'm going to get sick, but there's no way I can pay out of pocket for lab tests and the like. I need insurance right away, but I work a minimum wage job and I can only afford so much. Please help

How much does US health insurance cost?

Wow. All over the map. So many choices. So many compromises. Analogy: How much does a car cost?I have 3 plans in front of me that I have to choose from for next year. 2 are HMOs (these are cheaper). 1 is a PPO (more expensive but covers more hospitals and providers).1 HMO is only $107/mo. for the employee only. If I add a child (healthy, young child) it goes up to $505/month. If I add 5 unhealthy children it goes up to $505/mo. Same same. WTF? If I add my spouse it’s $761/mo (shoot, she’s expensive! But worth it). Nice recovery. If I add the whole famdamily it’s $1111.96/mo. (Damn kids are expensive! But worth it).The HMO plan restricts the providers I can see (hospitals and physicians) to those who are in-network. That could be a lot in some areas, very few in others. Maybe my favorite FP is on the plan. Maybe not. Need to check that before I signup. Nearest dermatologist on the plan could be 5 miles away or 50. Need to check that. Maybe I’ll never need a dermatologist. Not this year anyway. Lots of decisions. Other factors: copays- $35 for primary, $65 for a specialist. Deductible: I haven’t quite figured out how this works, but it’s $2000. There’s stuff about different copays for imaging (x-rays, CTs, and MRIs) and ERs.The PPO plans covers lots more providers (it pays them more, so more doctors are willing to sign onto these plans- I won’t say better, but busier, more popular doctors-they don’t have to see patients for less) so I pay more for that insurance: $185/mo. for me alone, $684/mo. me+child(s), $946 me+wife (how much is a divorce?) , $1354/mo. me+kids+wife (she can have the kids with the divorce). $25 copay for FP; $45 for specialists; deductible is $15000 (WTF?).OK. You got all that? That is one small and very incomplete description of some health plans offered through an employer. I’ve had better (Cleveland Clinic; U of Miami), and I’ve seen a lot worse. If you are self employed you can be pretty much screwed. You can pay a lot less if you are willing to join an HMO, but your choices of providers (physicians) and facilities (hospitals) may be greatly limited. If you go “out of network” on an HMO, your insurance plan may pay nothing. And the providers you see out of network are not limited in what they can charge you except by good faith.

Why is it considered illegal to not have health insurance?

How do I avoid paying for Health insurance in America and still be legal? In the U.S. it is NOT “illegal” to opt out of obtaining Health Insurance.Your choices as an alternative of securing “essential health benefits” are:Pay the Tax PenaltySeek an ExemptionThe Tax Penalty for 2016 is 2.5% of your total household Adjusted Gross Income, or $695 per adult and $347.50 per child to a maximum of $2,085.The tax/penalty can be considered an opportunity cost of purchasing your health insurance. Can you still use your parents health insurance after age 26?

Health Insurance Coverage For Children and Young Adults Under 26 At 26, you are no longer able to remain on your parent's health insurance because you can no longer legally be considered your father's dependent. You may, however, purchase your own insurance or if you do not make enough money to buy insurance, you can apply for Medicaid (government insurance for low-income and disabled people). As a college student, many universities offer health insurance through the school, so that would be something you could look into as well.Health Care Coverage Options for College Students Health Care Coverage Resources for Young Adults At 26, you will have been a legal adult for nearly a decade and its really time to be an independent adult, college or not. An undergraduate degree should not take you more than 5 years (and really, the goal ought to be 4 when possible). I'm not sure when you went into college, but if you're the typical person who went in at 18 and you don't expect to be done by the time you're 26, that's an issue you really need to address. There's no reason for a bachelor's degree to take 8 years to complete.

Is it legal to take your child off of your health insurance?

Yes. No state except Massachusetts REQUIRES health insurance.

And heck, you're not a child any more, you're an adult.

Whoever told you he wasn't allowed to take you off because you have a medical problem, made that up. He's allowed to take you off, for any reason, or no reason.

You're obviously not playing by his rules, and you're legally an adult. Cowboy up. You can't demand lifelong support from dad, and play by your own rules. That only works with welfare.

Is it illegal not to have health insurance on your child?

Megan -- There is no law that requires that parents have health insurance on their child/ren. Unfortunately your mother might not have been able to obtain health insurance for you because of pre-existing conditions (because you already have an illness) -- most insurance companies will not sell coverage to someone who already has a serious illness. In terms of medicare that would only apply for older people. You probably mean medicaid. Your mother might have tried to apply for medicaid and was probably declined due to ineligibility maybe because your household income might be too high. Your state might offer a Children's Health Insurance Program that she can get for you but that also has an income requirement even though that requirement is usually much more lenient than medicaid.

Another alternative -- if your mother has a support order from you father for you, she can try going back to the court and requesting that the order be amended to include a requirement that he provide you with health insurance. Once it is a court order, it would be illegal for your father not to comply. In addition once the order is issued your father can add you to his group health insurance at work and the insurance company cannot refuse to cover you even with your pre-existing condition.

In terms of your comment about your mother being too lazy. What appears to be laziness might actually be a symptom of depression and hopelessness. Sometimes adults can get overwhelmed with trying to resolve problems that seem truly intractable. I suggest that you continue to work with your grandmother and try to sit down with your mother so you can see how you can resolve this.

While I don't think it will be easy to find a solution. I am sure if you all work together it will make it easier on all of you.

I hope this information helps you and your family. I wish you the best of luck and will keep you in my prayers.

Can we remove our adult child from health insurance?

It's impossible for an 18 year old to get health insurance unless they can get it through their employer or as a university student. I doubt either of those are possible since she is still in high school.

Have no idea how someone else can "manipulate" her insurance. If they use it fraudulently for their own care would be insurance fraud.

If she was my daughter, I'd provide the insurance until her 19th birthday when she can purchase who own insurance. This way you aren't leaving her high and dry without coverage.

If you do drop her, you will only be able to re-add if you have employer based insurance if she has a life event (in her case, only if she had gotten other insurance and then dropped it) or at open enrollment.
