Help Me Make Varsity Cheerleading Next Year

I want to make varsity cheerleading next year as a sophomore, help?

If you keep doing tumbling lessons, you'll get your backhand spring soon. I strongly suggest doing privates at least once a week (if you can afford it) because I did privates every day last week and now I'm extremely close to my backhand spring (standing)!

For jumps, go buy ankle weights. Practice each type of jump about 5 times with the ankle weights on. It's hard and your jumps look really bad but if you do that everyday then your jumps will improve dramatically. Also, when you watch TV or do homework, sit on the floor and sit in hurdler position and switch legs after a while. This will help your flexibility for jumps while weights help your height and getting your legs up high.

For motions, get wrist weights (or use ankle weights) and practice hitting motions with weights on. Practice, practice practice! I'm assuming since you're on JV, you've already learned most of your cheers for football season. Practice each cheer with wrist weights each day. It takes time, but once you do it without your weights- your motions look so, so, so extremely sharp!

For dancing, really all you can do is practice the dances all over again. If you have friends on varsity, practice with them and have them give you advice on the dances. Watch yourself in the mirror and practice full out. If you practice over the top, dramatic, etc., your dances will look so good! You could also do dance classes every once in a while, just to get some simple steps down so you get used to rhythm and how to move your hips and such.

Also, overall just stretch for 15 minutes a night if you have time. This will improve your jumps, kicks, dancing, and also if you're a "top", your flexibility to be able to do heel stretches, scorpions, etc.

Tryouts aren't till next summer for you so if you do everything on this list everyday or at least three times a week, you'll get so much better. And if you do it everyday for longer then I say, you could probably move up for basketball season! You really have to push yourself and know how bad you want it.

I'm on JV but I'm going to be moved up any day now because I do exactly what I told you to do! And remember, school comes first. Always do your homework before practicing cheer stuff. Good luck!

How can I make the Varsity cheerleading team next year?

Oh my Gosh, We are both in the SAME exact situation! I'm a freshman, tried out in the spring, didn't make either squad, so I'm gonna try out again this spring shooting to make the Varsity squad! I also believe I had the potential to make the JV squad but of course I let my nerves get to me, so I messed up the cheer, blanked out in the middle of the dance and just stood there like a shaky little Chihuahua. Anyway, what I'm saying is, I may not be a cheerleader (yet! :]) but since not making the team I've decided I'm going to stick to my dream, work hard and start preparing as soon as possible so that I can get really good, and I've done A LOT of research! Over the past couple months I've basically been obsessed with finding out everything I need to know and do to make the Varsity squad. I'm DETERMINED to make it, and I know that if I work hard enough I CAN! So my advice to you is just stay determined, don't give up, and work hard in your tumbling classes and on the all-star team! Here are some more tips:
1. Stretch every day! This along with everything else will help you become more limber and flexible, so your kicks and jumps are high and tight and you can do all 3 splits!
2. Work on making your motions really tight, almost stiff, and make sure when you're dancing your moves are sharp and you really hit them!
3. Try to eat a little healthier, take a jog every day and walk more places if you can. And drink more water!
4. Work on your confidence!! Get your confidence level up and along with your great skills, by the team the next tryouts roll around you'll be a surefire bet to make the Varsity squad! Have a positive attitude, be enthusiastic and outgoing and SMILE! And remember also to have a loud but clear, steady voice in your cheer!
And don't let anyone get you down! If you're determined and you work hard, you can do anything (sounds cheesy but it's true) so if anyone says that you're shooting to far for wanting to make Varsity or that you won't be good enough, ignore them! You'll prove them wrong!!

That advice I just gave you is basically what I'm giving to myself, too- we're working toward the same goal! Anything else I didn't mention, just look up on the internet- it has everything!
I hope I helped you and good luck!!! :)

How to make Varsity Cheerleading with no experience?

Help me make varsity cheerleading next year?

Honestly, I think the most important thing for you to work on is your tumbling. You should try to find a tumbling class you can afford. Maybe your local community centre offers tumbling classes that might be cheaper than classes at a professional gymnastics studio or gym. If you can't find any affordable tumbling classes, try learning some skills by yourself.

Here is a list of skills you should try to learn:

1. Cartwheel
2. Roundoff
3. Splits (right, left, middle)
4. Tuck Jump
5. Toe Touch*

I think you will be able to get your roundoff and definitely your cartwheel in time for tryouts. Your splits are also super important. Try to stretch your splits at least 4-5 times a week. Tuck jumps are pretty easy, I bet you can already do one now. Practice them. A toe touch is also really important for you to learn. I know it might be quite difficult to get it in time for tryouts, but work on it. It is definitely a very important cheerleading skill. To learn these skills, try looking up tutorials on youtube about how to do a cartwheel, stretch your splits, etc. Youtube tutorials definitely do not replace a proper coach, though. You should be very careful when trying skills on your own, and don't attempt any skills that you know are beyond your level.

Other tips for doing well at tryouts:

- be really confident
- be cheerful and kind
- encourage other girls
- speak loudly and confidently when saying the cheers

Good luck!

How do I make the cheerleading squad?

When I was in middle school I decided to try out for my middle school Cheerleading team. I felt like a fish out of water watching these girls perform each angle, dance, and jump with ease. I was overwhelmed learning the crash course for tryouts which was done within a week and fortunately I did not make the team. FORTUNATELY. I say this because it lit a fire within me, I became determined to train and try out again for my high school team. The year before beginning high school I began to go to gymnastics, I learned the proper way to stretch so I could increase my flexibility and be able to execute the jumps. I went on YouTube and searched the basic angles that were performed and learned those one at a time. I even searched dance tutorials so I could become accustomed to learning routines with counts and become quicker at picking up the routines. I trained every night for that whole year. By the time try outs came I was able to execute all the jumps, angles, and was able to do the splits. Tryouts were a breeze in comparison to my first experience in middle school because I was so much more prepared. My point is, nothing is easy but if you train and prepare you too can make your cheerleading team. I went from not being remotely considered for the cheerleading team to making varsity my second year and being captain my third and fourth year. Work hard, don’t give up.

I missed varsity cheerleading tryouts?

call or email your school or the cheer coach. since you moved, i'm sure she might be willing to give you a chance. tell her you really want to be on the team and you'd be willing to make up your own dance/cheers to perform to make it easier on her. just make sure to be very friendly and proffessional when you contact her... it can make or break your chance.

and as far as i know, all star teams usually have their tryouts in april or may, so it might not be too late. double check with a few squads around your area. even if it's too late, try talking to the gym.... they're usually always looking for more cheerleaders.

if you do get to tryout, cheerwiz.com and mspineapple.com are very helpful with all things cheer :D

good luck!! :]

How can I make Varsity cheer Sophomore year?

Hi! I'm in the EXACT same position as you. I've never cheered before (until now) and I just made the JV Squad at my High school. The requirements (at our high school) to make Varsity is standing back hand-spring, and a round of back hand-spring (going into a back tuck is even better, but not required)

It might be different at your school though. I suggest talking to your coach about what you can do improve, and definitely take those tumbling classes. Just keep working super hard and don't give up! But don't just focus on Varsity right now, learn as much as you can from JV! The experience will do you good, and having that will help you when you try out again next year.

Good luck to you sweetie! I'm trying to make Varsity next year as well :)

Is it possible for a freshmen to make varsity cheerleading?

Yeah, of course, if you work really hard at it! I work at my gymnastics for hours at a time, because I don't quit until I've mastered a skill. So if you really want to learn your handspring backtuck and layout then just keep working hard and you'll get it.

Here's some tips: Practice the form of the back tuck by rebounding really high and at your highest point of the rebound, tuck your knees really hard, but don't flip. after this, when you do go to rotate, hold the back of your knees and focus on one spot in the distance all the way through the flip until your knees get in the way. Make sure you go really high and stick your landing. you must keep a tight tuck all the way through.Don't put your legs straight or that is called a back pike. you should land with your feet planted on the ground and arms up to the ceiling. Feet should be together.

A freshman can make the varsity cheerleading team. It is possible. My friend made it last year and she was a freshman. But you have to be really good at all of the skills.

Good luck!

What should I do after not making the varsity cheer team? I recently tried out for the varsity Cheer team. After doing varsity this year I was hopeful for another year, but instead current 8th and 7th traders made varsity and I(9th) was put on jv

You can ask the coach to tell you their reasoning for choosing you for jv instead of varsity. Maybe s/he can explain their decision and can give you suggestions on what you need to work on to be on varsity for the next year, or perhaps be moved to the team later on in the year. Work on the things that they tell you and don’t give up! Consistently stretching and doing exercises properly like squats, pushups, sit ups, planks, etc can really help your body in all areas of cheerleading. Ask for help when you need it! In the meantime, keep working on your skills and ask someone if they see any areas where you can improve. If you must cheer on the JV squad, keep working hard and consistently and become a leader for the rest of the cheerleaders. You do not have to be a captain (if you don’t want to) but hold yourself accountable and hold each other accountable for practicing, improving and building their skills. Do what you say you’re going to do, and what you expect others to do. Be a reliable and trustworthy teammate to your cheerleaders. Also, take care of yourself. Make sure you are properly stretched and hydrated, and that everyone else is too. Give your coaches no doubt about choosing you for the varsity team in the next tryouts.

What is the difference between Varsity Cheer and JV Cheer?

I think its more about a mix of experience, talent, and skill

You need to pass harder auditions for varsity
so naturally varsity cheer is filled with more jrs and seniors
