Help My Dog Seems Depressed

My dog seems depressed after moving.?

I recently moved into an apartment from my mothers house with my dog, Doomsey, a staffordshire terrier. He is a very well behaved, confident and caring dog. He's infinitely attached to me. We moved into an apartment with my girlfriend and our other dog, a French bulldog Boston terrier mix who he loves and is protective of. The frenchie seems to be adjusting well, even with her going outside on a leash instead of in a yard. Doomsey, on the other hand is not adjusting well at all. He just sort of mopes around and acts uninterested in everything other than me petting him, he's normally a very energetic dog. I have tried to increase his walks / runs and am trying to spend more time with him. My girlfriend says when I'm not home all he does Is curl up on the couch and let out soft wimpers. Even when she gives him his red ball, his FAVORITE thing in the world, he acts uninterested. Adjusting to the leash to go to the bathroom is a nightmare as well. I go out with him probably 6 times a day, and of the 8 days we have lived in the apartment I have got him to pee outside twice. When we come home and find his miss, he cowers and puts his head down like he is ashamed, he knows WHERE he is supposed to go... He just won't do it. At the house he would never go inside.

His behavior is really starting to worry me, i care more about my dog than anything in the world and I need advice on helping him adjust and be his happy self again. I understand that it's traumatic for a dog to move, but I thought he would be getting better now that we've been here for more than a week....

Anny suggestions / advice would help me out a ton.

My dog seems depressed, what can I do?

We have a big beagle, looks like a english foxhound> we dont know which one it is. The vet said its a coonhound but it doesnt look like it. Anyway - Im not taking my dog to the vet over this (my parents dont want to pay)
So he is 8 years old, barks a lot, cries when we leave, and is SPOILED. We give him anything he wants, walk him twice, and he's overweight by 5 pounds.
Now he sleeps alo, but its more now. He doent walk around that umch anymore. He doesnt really get up to see up when we get home (rarely) , he still begs for food, but doesnt seem as playfully and hyper, and sleeps more often, or lays while just looking at us. why/!

My dog seems depressed and won't eat, how can I help?

I have a Boston terrier that is about 7 years old, he's a rescue and when we first got this little guy he would chase us around the yard, he used to be super skinny when we got him because he wasn't properly fed by his previous owners, then after about a year he was at the right size, he ate anything we treated him with off of the table and ate regularly from his bowl. Now Brewster lays on the end of the couch, not wanting to play, helps when trying to be picked up. He hardly eats, we tried many different brands of dry and wet dog food. His sight and smell is going bad. And hes picky with table food treats. He used to not be able to resist coming to someone who calls his name, now he hardly looks, Boston terriers are supposed to live to about 17 so he is supposed to live about 10 more years. Can someone ease tell me what's going on with him? Thanks

Also I posted this before but I forgot to add that he has been to a vet several times and they have only said to try and switch food and nothing is wrong. Also I'm not sure if this may have an effect on him but he has a large knot on his leg, vet says once again it's nothing and common. He's dudurd witch is known to depress dogs but he's been nudurd since his rescue and has been fine before. And thank you everyone who gave me answers last time and who answers this time.

My papillon dog seems depressed. What can I do to help her through this transition?

Her old owner just gave her to me because I provide a good home and she had some circumstances and needed to get rid of her dogs. I took a female, 3 years old, Juliette is her name. We are crazy about her! We just got her yesterday, and she hasn't eaten yet (we've tried to feed her 5 times) and she has eaten treats but has not pooped yet, even though we give her plenty oppurtunity. She sleeps all the time and seems sad. I bought her three different kinds of treats and chew toys to make her happy, we pet her a lot, we talk to her, we try to do everything we know to make her happy. But she just seems so sad! What can I do? Will she eventually adjust? Is there anything we can do to make sure she begins enjoying life here sooner? She won't even chew her favorite chewtoy! Please, any advice will be appreciated.

Can dogs be depressed?

My bitch had once given premature birth to 7 puppies. Five of them died within a few days. She refused to eat and lay gloomily in her couch nudging the two remaining pups. When we put the dead puppies into a cardboard box, she plunged towards it with all her might , forced open the lid and relentlessly licked the lifeless bodies as though asking for a last chance to revive their lives. That sight made me cry.I remember pulling her away and my dad getting rid of the box. At first she just sat there. Didn't respond to my "Hey Silky". Then ran back to her sleeping cubs and licked them, letting them know she was still there. It took her a month to return to normal. Before that I didn't see her wag her tale. She was back to normal once her puppies turned into the playfully growling toothless ninjas. Before that she failed to show any sort of interest in her favourite games.I assume she was deeply hurt. A mother who lost her kids. She was depressed for a long time. I think the deaths may have left her scarred forever.I remember how she took care of her pups the next time she gave birth. The happiness sparkled in her eyes.YES SHE definitely experienced EMOTIONS.

Why is my dog so bored and depressed? How can I help him?

Dogs are naturally pack animals. They love being in community. You, his human, are part of that community. If you leave him alone for extended periods without allowing him to experience community, he will experience lack, and therefore become bored or depressed.Have you considered the possibility of getting a companion for him (e.g., another pet)? That will allow it experience community it, so long as the other pet also has the "community capacity".

How can dogs help with depression?

I guess, the best thing is that they get you outside. You get some sunlight there, that alone can help with the depression. Also, dogs are creatures of sheer and unlimited positivity. They do their best at cheering you up and always stay with you. There's no way a dog would leave its master. It's just good not to be alone in the dark times.Dogs don't judge.I also find my dog's breathing very soothing. Sometimes I crawl up to her, hug her, and lie there next to her for an hour. I try to synch our breathing pattern so that I feel part of something bigger. I feel that she's a living being and so am I. It's a kind of meditation, I suppose.

What are the signs of a depressed dog? How should I help my own who seems to be depressed?

Anti-anxiety medication has been used in dogs; dog cognition experts are investigating when it makes sense to talk about mental illness in animals, although whole books exist on the subject (e.g. polar bears pacing in zoos, chimps dragging around the body of babies). While dogs may “mourn” mostly they need love and attention and are not likely to have the long-lasting type of depression humans seem to get. If you dog gets walks, training, affection, and time with you it is unlikely to stay depressed; if it engages in self-destructive behavior, repetitive behavior, etc. talk to a vet.

My dog's depressed after having been neutered, how do I help him?

Help, a little over a month ago I had my dog neutered (he was fifteen months old at the time). He was extremely active, now I can barely get him to move. He used to be extremely playful and affectionate, now he is not. I asked my vet before proceeding if I could expect any drastic personality changes and she said 'no', then she said 'give him a few days'. He is healthy and eating properly. Is there something I can do to get my friend back? I feel so angry and so betrayed by all the lies I was told that I have lost faith not just in my own vet, but in the profession as a whole. The problem is that I don't know who to trust... not to mention that there's no way to undo the procedure. How can I help him?

Is it selfish to own a dog to help with depression?

Only if you are absolutely sure the dog won’t be neglected because of it. I know serious depression can lead to a neglect of duties, and while dishes can pile up and your laundry can go uncleaned, this can’t be afforded with a dog. So be honest with yourself. Be absolutely sure the dog will be taken care of, that you will take him out and play with him no matter how down you feel, and that you are up for the tasks of conditioning and training so you can coexist without aggravation and problems. Only you know how your depression affects you, so only you can decide if it is selfish or not.
