Help Understanding My Resting Metabolic Rate Test Results

Is resting metabolic rate changeable?

i heard the resting metabolic rate RMR, calories you burn for basic metabolic functions, are dependent on genetics. height and muscle mass.
i have had mine tested before, and a friend of mine who was 200 lbs had 1200 kcal/day and i had 1400/day.

is it possible to change this number? if it is dependent on muscle mass, will resistant training increase it?

also, is there a place in NY where i can get a reliable test for RMR?

Is metabolic testing worth it?

The test would give you an insight into your basal metabolic rate and you would learn about your "Vo2 max" and "lactate threshold" but how relevant would that be to you? It's useful for dedicated athletes who want to devote their time to zonal training because it gives them an understanding of how much they are exerting themselves and when fatigue will set in but for an average club cyclist it's just an expensive gimmick that offers little prospect of improving their performance.

What basal metabolic rate is considered healthy?

To be honest, there is no 'healthy' for BMR. Obviously, the higher it is, the more you can eat without putting on weight (assuming that activity level is the same as the other person in question). Higher BMRs generally mean heavier, which can be good or bad - depending on whether the person is muscular or sedentary and have lots of excess fat instead of healthy lean mass.

I don't understand BMR and RMR help!?

Hope you don't mind but I was just clarifying my answer and came across this passage online that explains things a lot clearer than I could:

BMR and RMR are estimates of how many calories you would burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours. They represent the minimum amount of energy required to keep your body functioning, including your heart beating, lungs breathing, and body temperature normal.

" BMR stands for Basal Metabolic Rate, and is synonymous with Basal Energy Expenditure or BEE. BMR measurements are typically taken in a darkened room upon waking after 8 hours of sleep; 12 hours of fasting to ensure that the digestive system is inactive; and with the subject resting in a reclining position.
RMR stands for Resting Metabolic Rate, and is synonymous with Resting Energy Expenditure or REE. RMR measurements are typically taken under less restricted conditions than BMR, and do not require that the subject spend the night sleeping in the test facility prior to testing."

To calculate how many calories you should consume and what these calories should be made up of there's a really useful tool here:

Good luck!

What does a low basal metabolic rate mean?

Your Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the energy that you expend before you perform any activity. It’s the energy used primarily by your brain, liver, kidneys, and lungs to simply allow you to survive.A low BMR would be a BMR lower than the expected normal, usually less than 1500 kilocalories a day.A low BMR can be caused primarily by hormone imbalances, like low thyroid levels. It can also be caused by not eating enough energy over a long period of time. Your body adapts to the environment that it is in. If you don’t provide it with enough energy to survive, it will consume itself to make up the difference. After enough time, it will down throttle your energy use to make it last longer.A low BMR simply means that you use less energy to survive than a normal person, by itself there is nothing more to it. It could lead to less appetite and when you do eat, you’ll require less than a normal person to gain weight (because it’s easier to reach an energy surplus).HOWEVERBased on your additional details:How would someone who binge eats and throws up what they consumed be affected?Low BMR isn’t what you should be concerned about. There are tons of side effects to binge eating and bulimia apart from a lowered BMR.Please, please, please, seek out a doctor, preferably an eating disorder specialist. This is not healthy behavior, it’s a dangerous and life threatening condition.

How can one lower BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate)?

1. Eat cruciferous vegetables in greater amounts. Broccoli, kale, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, etc.2. Increase your estrogen-testosterone and/or estrogen-progesterone ratios. This can be done by hormone replacement therapy or by cultivating allergies and hypersensitivities (aromatase activation by cytokine induction).3. Take melatonin.4. Fast. For an extended period of time.5. Play with mercury and lead.6. Irradiate your thyroid gland.7. Use fluoride every chance your get.  Toothpaste, dental treatments, mouthwash, etc.8. Take arsenic.9. Take a statin drug.10. Expose yourself to positive ions.11. Push yourself into adrenal exhaustion.12. Sleep deeply.13.  Take Xyrem (gamma-hydroxybutyrate).14. Spend time in a Faraday cage.15. Increase your altitude, spend time in the eye of a hurricane or take a respiratory-center suppressing opiate).16. Meditate.17. Spray your garden with rotenone without wearing gloves or a mask.18. Breathe air contaminated with carbon monoxide or hydrogen cyanide.19. Drink plastic-bottled water frequently.20. Avoid the sun and/or use sunscreens obsessively.I think this is enough.

Why do males have higher basal metabolic rates (BMR) than females?

First of all it is important to understand what is BMR. BMR stands for Bаѕаl mеtаbоlіс rаtе іѕ bаѕісаllу the rеԛuіrеd саlоrіе іntаkе fоr a dау in which уоu dо nоthіng. Stаrtіng frоm thіѕ роіnt, уоu can decide уоur dаіlу prerequisites аnd you can ѕtау hеаlthу аnd mаіntаіn оr оbtаіn аn perfect wеіght. Thіѕ bаѕаl mеtаbоlіс rate needs to bе multірlіеd wіth lеvеl оf асtіvіtу multірlіеr to acquire thе numbеr оf calories уоur body really nееdѕ for funсtіоnіng рrореrlу. It іѕ nаturаllу undеrѕtооd thаt thе асtіvе уоu аrе, thе hіghеr thе аmоunt оf required саlоrіеѕ. Males usually have a higher BMR than females (of the same age) because males tend to have a higher proportion of lean body mass than females of the same age. Conversely, females tend to have a higher proportion of fat cells and fat cells have a lower metabolic rate than lean muscle cells. You can learn more about BMR at: Understanding BMR at Make Healthy Life If you want calculate your BMR you can use available online calculators to get a approximate value, one tool that i use is:  BMR CalculatorHope it helps.

How do I find my minimum calorie requirement using my Resting Heart Rate?

Um.. you really can't . Resting Heart Rate is an indicator of your fitness level, what you use to calculate out the most effective rates for you to train at. (it is called the Karovean method and generally the most effective way to calculate training heartrates)

You would use Base Metabolic Rate and Resting Metabolic Rate to calculate dailiy minimum requirement and add in your daily activities. It is most effective if you know your bodyfat % but you can get a general idea if you know your total body weight. I would bump it up a bit if you work out frequently (lbm burns more calories than fat) and don't forget to add in daily activities.
