Help With Beginner Aspiring Dj/producer

Making beat's for beginner/aspiring producer?

Have you ever branched out and used other programs? There are tons of programs that you can use to make beats with your PC. Besides FL Studio being a good tool for a beginner, try Propellerhead's Reason. I know a lot of producers who are using that and having good results.

Also, while I know you're in school for music, there's a manual I know of that has MASSES of video tutorials for making beats. It's crazy. You can check it out in the link below. This manual teaches you the in's and out's of making beats.

Good luck!

What should I buy as a beginner DJ / Producer / Musician?

Numark has some great beginner DJ products on the market. I would recommend a controller that works with either Serato or Traktor. The best controllers on the market in my opinion are Pioneer and they are well worth it if within your budget. I personally use the DDJ-SX and had the DDJ-S1 before that but any of the beginner products would be a great starting point. The best thing you can do is to get a really good computer, I recommend Macs but a really good PC will do the job as well. For your music library make sure you are getting good quality mp3's to work with, it's well worth it to start with a good quality music source.

Pioneer and Sennheiser both make great heapdhones for DJ use.

Speakers, I am a huge fan of QSC powered K series speakers highly recommend them to anyone.

As an aspiring DJ and music producer, what sort of things should I buy to start out?

Cakewalk Sonar X1 is very beautiful program when it comes to music production. It's built for that. However, if you're looking for a less sophisticated program, FL Studio works fine for music production too.

Cakewalk Sonar comes in many different versions. Essential, Producer, Studio and Suite, ranging from $99 - $499.

FL Studio also comes in different versions. Express, Fruity, Producer and Signature.

Express - $49
Fruity - $99
Producer - $199
Signature - $299

For producing electronic music, all you really need are a good set of speakers and your computer (since you have a DAW). And you're getting me confused too ^_^ "DJ" stands for disk jockey and not producer. You're better off calling yourself a producer than a DJ to avoid misconception.

Anyway, about your MIDI keyboard. You can connect it to your computer via an external soundcard (ie. Creative, Roland, etc.)

Most professional audio soundcards have MIDI to USB features and you can take this advantage by attaching your midi cable into the soundcard and a USB.

Theres also MIDI to USB cables around most music shops =)

It is helpful to get project packs (like another person here said). Also useful to drop a track into a DAW to look at it and examine the sections. Chop up intro, verse, chorus, build, breakdown, etc. and take notes on characteristics:what is the tempo? what genre(s) would this fall into?what are the characteristics of the main drum elements: is kick long or short, is snare tight or have a tail, what is going on with the hats, are they using other percussion elements (shakers, congas, metal hits, pots and pans, etc.)run it through mixed in key to figure out key signatureconsider the mix: what are the dominant elements, where is the sub coming from —- are they focused on mid basses with an underlying sub, or is it an 808 style boomy kick with a long tail providing the subconsider the sounds / sound design: what keeps it interesting? is there movement on the bass (like all dubstep does), or is it a lot of interplay of different sound elements (complextro), is there a vocal and what is it doing?Of course you can go much deeper. This is a great video both for substance and also to coach you on how to dissect and analyze music:

I also go to college and am a DJ. It all depends on your style and how much you can spend. It's not a cheap thing to start. I agree with the B-52 Matrix 1000 system. I picked that up when I began. It is expensive though. But what you need to sit down and think about is what kind of equipment you want to use. CDJ's are good way to go because every club across the world has them. Digital DJ-ing is beginning to become more and more popular, but you need more equipment than you think. At least a laptop, a program (virtual Dj, ableton, serato, etc.) Vinyl is cool, but only if you have the money and ability to hawl all the records around.... plus, it's a pain to find those good songs on vinyl.

I will suggest this, think about how pro-active you want to be as a dj, are you looking to perform and interact with your equipment. i.e. show some skills. Or are you just looking to mix on a screen, that usually beatmatches for you. Either way you are going to have to get a mixer.

Look at Pioneer CDJ-200 or CDJ-800. Thats the industry standard. (1000 are too expensive) And then go out and find a good mixer with lot's of capabilities. (digital in-outs, plenty of masters, and booth.

Also Try going to a your local shop to feel around with what you like.

Nice used equipment for cheap. You don't need to be dropping $$$$$$$ just starting out.

I need some beginner DJ help for some basics and advice would be appreciated.?

My wife and I are Regular Pioneers. We both work to maintain our pioneering. But we have part time jobs. We both have an associates degree. I was originaly studying to become an architect but because the motives where the wrong ones (money and prestiege), eventhough I was very good at it, I decided to evaluate if for me it would be a good choice to continue in that. So I droped out and studies close to home at a technical school a short 2 yr degree in Computer Programing. I am also good at that, but it was also a waste of time, why? Because down here where I live its a very slow profesion. I would have to move to the metropolitan area and that would be a bad choice. So my job actualy has to do with Signmaking / Merchandising / Mystery Shopping / Artisan Work / Woodworking / etc / etc. So you see, in order to pioneer, we have to be creative to be self sufficient. I am not rich and many would consider that I am economicaly poor. I don't earn much but its just enough to not qualify for government help. So you see, we have to do the best we can without sacrificing our service to Jehovah. It's a question of balancing things out. If you relly on government help, well then you have to examine yourself and see if you would be considered self sufficient. But if you reject government help when you CUALIFY for it, then it could be pride or other things. So its a balance. I am sure that if you manage to balance both things out, then you will see that you will be able to regular pioneer, and if you make the room to get married, then with another brother who is a RP and very spiritual, you will be able to enjoy that part of life also. If you choose to stay single, you will be able to also enjoy that and all the extra freedom that gives you. I hope that helps. Feel free to email me if you want to continue to talk about the subject. Knowledge + Application = Wisdom

I'm sure if you read your question out loud to yourself, you'd realise that you already know these answers, but presumably through lack of confidence, you are 2nd guessing yourself. So let me make it simple for you:1. These days, unless you are signed to Sony et al, you wont be seeing any money from making/producing music.2. Putting (quality) music out may get you noticed, so have as many options as you can to capitalise on that ie being able to play your music live, by being able to remix other peoples music, write original songs etc. etc.3. Regardless of the opportunity, always maintain a broad set of skills - they will provide a broader spectrum of opportunities for revenue & career & when focus is lost on one, instead of just doing nothing, you can turn your focus to another. This will enable you to return to the former refreshed & motivated.4. The more equipment you are familiar with, the easier your life will be, but you don't have to know it all to start & you don't have to own it to have use of it.5. Most everything else should come from you, or not - you will determine if you succeed or not. Thanks for the A2A \U0001f60a
