Help With Sociological Perspective

HELP SOCIOLOGY! What sociological perspective is relevant to social class?

The best one would probably be conflict theory which is from the prospective of Karl Marx. You should also approach it from structural functionalism and discuss the latent and manifest functions related to social class. If you want to tie feminism and gender in with social class you can talk about glass ceiling and glass escalator and how those two terms relate directly to social class.

What is sociological perspective?

The sociological perspective is a particular way of approaching a phenomenon common in sociology. It involves maintaining objectivity, not by divesting oneself of values, but by critically evaluating and testing ideas, and accepting what may be surprising or even displeasing based on the evidence. The sociological perspective often assumes that “official” explanations are incomplete or self-serving. It involves a conscious effort to go beyond the obvious and question what is accepted as true or common sense. This is important because common-sense assumptions are usually based on very limited observation. Moreover, the premises on which common-sense assumptions are based are seldom examined. While sociological research might confirm common-sense observation, its broader observation base and theoretical rational provide a stronger basis for conclusions.
The sociological perspective helps us to see general social patterns in the behaviour of particular individuals and offers insights about the social world that extend far beyond explanations that rely on individual quirks and personalities. Essential to the sociological perspective is the sociological imagination. This term, attributed to C. Wright Mills, means “...the vivid awareness of the relationship between experience and the wider society.” It means going beyond the individual and understanding how structural forces shape individuals and their action.
The sociological perspective, as a broad way of approaching phenomena, is different from a sociological paradigm, which is a specific set of assumptions that frame a sociologist's theories and findings

Functionalism- each person follows and connects with others in order to further their development as individuals and contribute to society. Conflict- social media is ruled by those with more followers. People with more followers continue to gain followers as their content continues to be ever far reaching. People with less followers become lost in the blur of the rest of those with namesSymbolic interactionism- people connect with others for various reasons: starting relationships, continuing relationships, career aspirations, or something else. Social media is driven by people and their connections and interactions with others

There’s 3 main sociological theories:structural functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionism. However they differ, the most universal perspective can be concluded by ‘sociological imagination’,put your personal story and experiences into a larger societal even global context. And try to see the general patterns/paradigm of social activities ranging from your personal interactions with others to large social changes and movements.Say if you are living under different conditions with your friends or celebrities, you might attribute that to social stratification and think of where your position is on the social ladder. If we see two movie stars dating together,is it just because they are in love? What else do they need to consider? Think about class, ethnicity, age and sex and sexuality. If you are into popular culture like comic books or Marvel superheroes, how does these reflect the society’s value ? You might consider the individualistic society we are in.If you travel to a new city and see people interacting differently, you might consider using symbolic interactionism to explain it.If you line up like everyone else in the grocery store ,if you say ‘How are you’ to your friends when you meet ,you need to think how you are socialized that way all the time that you become part of the society’s running machine. What keeps society going on ? What forms such a seamless system that everyone seems to follow ? Sociologists find the strange from the normal. So think big, and think outside of the box—Seeing the general in the particular, seeing the strange in the familiar , seeing society in our everyday lives.Seeing our personal life as part of the changing societal ,national and even global process. That’s sociological perspective.

Help with sociological imagination!?

Jenny - Tried very hard to escape her abusive past and turned into a druggie.. Some people may say that Jenny should've stayed in college and actually made something of herself, but instead chose to pose for nude photos and so it's her fault. But the sociological imagination would be that her father abused her (sexually and physically) and that is the reason why she felt the need to "escape" her past. As for the nude photos, maybe she feels the need to get so much attention from men because she doesn't feel beautiful because of what her father did to her.

Lieutenant Dan- Someone's first impression of him would be that he is an alcoholic cripple. But the sociological perspective would be that he drinks to forget about the war and how he feels like a "freak" without his legs.

Forrest- People see him as "stupid" .. as if he doesn't try as hard as he can, or as if he isn't as good as they are. But when looking at the sociological imagination, he has low self-esteem because he knows that he isn't as bright as other people around him, and was tormented his entire childhood because of it.

How do the three major sociological perspectives view society?

"The" three major sociological perspectives? There are dozens if not hundreds of sociological perspectives. I suppose the big three are functionalism, conflict theory, and symbolic interactionism, but to say that these are "the" three is kind of odd. Durkheim and the functionalists look at the big picture of sociology, as a series of systems, and how they function or fail to appropriately function in society as a whole. Symbolic interactionalists are the opposite, focusing on individual interactions as the basis for understanding society. Conflict theorists, meanwhile, examine social power and harp about how evil society is because not everyone has it, blaming white men for everything bad that happens in society.

Analyze the social phenomenon of black Friday shopping frenzies from all three major sociological perspectives. Make sure you list how each perspective views these shopping frenzies. You could discuss possible causes or reasons why people partake in mass hysteria on black Friday, why it is viewed as a social issue, or how it effects society. The important factor is to express an understanding of how each theory interprets this topic as a social phenomenon. I want to see that you understand how to interpret the social world from a sociological perspective
