These are the best known of his quotes...

"One is only happy in proportion as he makes others feel happy and only useful as he contributes his influences for the finer callings in life." Milton Hershey

"Give them quality. That’s the best kind of advertising in the world." Milton Hershey

The more closely we work together, the more effectively can we contribute to the better health of all mankind; this should be our common objective and its achievement would make the world a happier place in which to live.” Milton Hershey

What is it like to attend the Milton Hershey School?

There are many rules, strict schedules. Lots of time away from your family, those at the school become your family. Each grade group are divided: pre k - 5, 6 - 8 9 -12 or something close. Girls and boys homes. Each time you change divisions, you change houseparents. These people are there to see you follow schedules, rules and complete chores. The houseparents usually have their own children who are there with them, they get time off, and relief houseparents are brought in.It's not overly difficult to get expelled from MHS, their rules are strict and they tend to be unbending and think nothing of dismissing a child for non compliance.MHS is a corporation, you, as a student are the cog needed for this corporation to access the 11 billion dollars in YOUR trust fund. If you act up, you become a public relations issue and they will dismiss you as soon as possible. This school is festering with many issues, it's a coin toss, this could go well for you, or quite horribly.Google Abbie Bartels as you research this school, the facts are out there, inform yourself.

How did Milton S. Hershey make a difference?

He created jobs for many people and also founded an excellent school for orphans. And he made great chocolate.

Is Milton Hershey School a good place?

The Milton Hershey School (MHS) is a great boarding school that offers terrific and unbelievable opportunities - at no cost to parents or sponsors. I am a graduate from the class of 1956 and will be celebrating my 60th class reunion this year.Entry requirements to MHS limit the income of a family of four to about $25,000. Every underprivileged child should have an opportunity to break the “cycle of poverty” and to level the playing field such that that child can succeed. That is what MHS does! This includes a college education. Over ten thousand children have graduated from MHS and many would echo the sentiment that “MHS saved my life.”The Milton Hershey School is “still around” because our beloved founder Milton S. Hershey wanted his school to last in perpetuity. Mr. Hershey once said, “If we had helped a hundred children it would have all been worthwhile.” Well, Mr. Hershey, you have helped over ten thousand (a hundred hundred) children and the numbers continue to increase.Mr. Hershey, the greatest philanthropist of them all, while still alive, gave away ALL his wealth to help disadvantaged children.MHS has an annual retention rate of about 90% indicating that MHS does not work out for every student.

Is this true about Hershey?

Afraid not... Hershey didn't invent it...although he did bring it to the USA...
Chocolates origins were in a drink made by the aztec indians...It was called Xocolatl (meaning bitter water). and was not sweet at all.
It was served to Hernan Cortés by Moctezuma, and Cortés consequently took it to Spain... in 1520

In Spain sugar was added to the drink to make it more palatable, and it became a fashionable hot beverage...

And when Ana, princess of Spain married Louis the XIII in 1615, she took the makings with her to France...Under Louis XIII and Louis XIV, the french started "chocolateries" where chocolate was the main beverage..and served with sweets and pastries....

As a powder, it was produced industrially and mecanically for the first time, in Barcelona, Spain, in 1777.

The first chocolate factories were founded in 1819 by a Mr. Pelletier in Paris and Mr. J.L. Cailler in Vevey, Switzerland (Cailler chocolates still exist!).

The first cocoa powder was invented in 1828 by a dutch chemist named Conraed Van Houten (Van Houten Cocoa has been used in europe ever since, and can also be found in the USA).

The first chocolate with hazelnuts was made in Lausanne Switzerland by a Mr.A.C. Kohler in 1831.

The first chocolate tablets were produced in England by Fry & Sons. ..in 1847

And The milk chocolate tablet was invented by Mr. Daniel Peter AND Mr. Henri Nestlé (who was an expert on child nutrition), in 1875.
Nestlé' Chocolates has been going strong ever since, and is now one of the largest conglomerates in the world food business.

Hershey was founded in 1876 as a caramel compàny by Mr. Milton S. Hershey, and failed twice before he finally succeeded on a third attempt. In 1896 he bought machinery imported from Germany, and started the making of chocolate to cover his caramels, he then sold the original caramel company and dedicated the rest of his life to chocolate making.
The Hershey's Kisses were born in 1907.

Although Nestle in Europe and Hershey in the USA are the two best and most well known chocolate makers... internationally known...

The most exquisite (and expensive) chocolates are made in Belgium by the Leonidas and Godiva companies.
And the small chocolate shops all over Europe with chocolates made by artisan hands are some of the most delicious in the world!

Milton Hershey School? Free Boarding School?

1) Yes, tuition there is $0. I doubt it will be 100% free though, there are bound to be expenses of some kind or another. But with $0 tuition, this shouldn't matter.
2) Not sure. There is no information about "school trips", "field trips", etc. on the school's website. Possibly not, because after all, you're getting your education for free. It would be very hard for the school to pay for field trips for its 1,700 students, and it would be even harder for the students' parents to pay for field trips. While there might be some local field trips, I highly doubt they do any large scale trips.
3) The average total income of a family of three enrolling in August 2004-05 was $13,748. So $39,000/year would be way above average, and it might be a stretch. But according to the website, "The School stresses low income, limited resources, social need, and age-appropriate behavior when considering applicants." So who knows, I'm not sure what the maximum is when they consider your parent's income.
4) I wouldn't give up so easily, I'm sure the school makes exceptions. The school says that it examines each student's case individually.
5) Here is the school's admission requirements: http://www.mhs-pa.org/admissions/applica...
6) An hour-long Chapel service on Sunday mornings is Mandatory. Education in the Judeo-Christian faith is part of the school program. If you want to attend church off-campus then you can fill out a form. For more on the school's worship policy, go here: http://www.mhs-pa.org/student-life/activ...
7) Foremost, the school is free. This is the biggest possible benefit. The campus is 3,200 acres, the national average is 150 acres. Average class size is 15 and the student-teacher ratio is 1:9, this is very good for a school where tuition is free.
8) You decide. http://www.mhs-pa.org/about/campus-build...
But be aware, pictures can be deceiving. Read this student review: http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/student_rev/stid/299

The downside of this school is it's massive student body, which it plans to extend to 2,100 students by 2013. The students must wear uniforms, which is a good or bad thing depending on your opinion of uniforms. Best of luck.
