Hi Why Does My 5 1/2 Month Old Kitten Have A Very Bloated Belly

2-week old kitten with large belly?

If the kitten doesn't seem to be in any pain or ticked off, or anything like that, then she is probably fine. If you want to rule out inability to eliminate waste, take a warm (NOT hot) kleenex (without lotion or anything) and wipe her rear end until she either pees or poops. Likely she will at least pee, perhaps try it a couple of times if she doesn't go the first time. (Watch carefully, pee will probably be clear or very very light yellow. and if it's a boy aim it away from your face!) If you don't ever see anything come out, then you might want to give the vet a call. But as long as she doesn't seem sickly, weak or in pain then she's probably just a chunky butt.

Accidentally given milk to my kitten! What to do?

Kittens will tolerate milk until a certain age and then it may cause problems. The kitten may be older than you think. You could try goat's milk - which my vet recommended years ago rather than cow milk. There is also a milk replacer that is used with orphan kittens. However, I have always used goat milk with any I have raised, and never had a problem.

You did not mention this, but I assume the kitten had a lot of diarrhea from that change in the milk, and could become seriously dehydrated, and could even die. Try force feeding it water using a dropper if you have one until you can get it to a vet, Generally they will use an IV to provide fluid to reduce the dehydration and may even keep it overnight, or more.

ADDENDUM: so sorry for your loss but don't feel to blame - you have learned something if you ever find another one. These things happen even to the best of us.Don't let this keep you from keeping another 4-footed baby and giving it love, attention, healthy meals, and a great home.

We should never give cats foods or drinks meant for humans, and milk is especially bad. Maybe a few can tolerate it for a while but may eventually start showing some signs of lactose intolerance just like humans.

If the kitten had teeth, it needed to be fed solid food and not a total milk diet.Kittens begin eating at 3 weeks, and you could have added a tiny bit of the milk to soften dry food but not as a meal substitute.

Good luck and I hope this kitten recovers and returns to good health. My prayers are with you.

Will a dog eat itself to death if you give it twenty pounds of food? Or will it get full and walk away at some point?

I came home from work one day to find my dogs had broken into the cabinet and eaten an entire week's worth of food in one sitting. There was a shredded bag, a couple areas covered with puked up dog food, and two dogs lying on their sides as if they were in A LOT of discomfort. I cleaned up the mess, trying not to yell because if you don't catch a dog in the act yelling at them accomplishes nothing. Then, I got my dinner and went to the living room only to hear my dogs whining and pushing their bowls around because it was almost six o'clock, their normal time for dinner. I'm speculating that it's possible for a dog to eat itself to death, but more likely it's just going to be sick and then ready to eat again after that.Edit: People have pointed out to me that it's possible for a dog to die from bloat from eating too much of something or something it shouldn't have eaten. I agree that it's NOT a good idea to give dogs free reign of food unless you're 100% sure you have a "grazer" but still think, overall, the majority of dogs will vomit as a means of self-protection than will die from overeating.
