Honda Cx500 Engine Issue.

My 82 cx500 honda is siezed?

Your sideways V twin is a really durable bike. Abroad they are often used in courier service and are long lasting machines. The one weak spot was the water pump which often leaked and is evident by staining where the pipe goes into the block behind the left cylinder. It's very likely that the coolant leaked out, overheating the engine, and causing the engine to seize. It may not be ruined, but must be dismantled for inspection, and repair. To access the water pump also requires dismantling. Parts are still plentiful and many from the later CX650 will fit. Watch the budget because you can quickly exceed the value of the bike.

My 1982 Honda CX500 makes a loud rattling sound coming from the engine, what might be the cause of this?

The CX500 is one of the best made by Honda. Many are used in courier service and accumulate six figure miles with little maintenance. The sound you are hearing is likely the water pump, maybe the weakest link in that V twin engine. Have you noticed any coolant leaks behind the engine on the left side? If it's leaked in the past a trail will remain on the aluminum case there. Does it seem to be making noise from that area? Regarding your other question about an oil leak. Is it possible that it's coolant, not oil? Oil leaks are very rare in the cx.

Does a Honda CB Hornet 160R engine make a lot of noise?

No it does not create any bad sound, it has a sound note which good to hear, but there is some rattling noise coming from the engine by default. Nothing to worry about. But it is not as smooth and refined as unikorn 150 unit.Performance wise it may be better. Thanks

I have a 1980 Honda CX500 with Clutch problems. Is there supposed to be oil in the clutch housing?

When you say 'slipping out of gear' do you mean the clutch was slipping? First check the adjustment of the clutch cable (the knurled adjusters are where the cable enters the clutch lever).

If the clutch disengages but is slipping, you probably need new clutch plates. Bikes run engine oil to lubricate the gears- as opposed to cars which have separate engine and gearbox- so the oil is no problem. It's not too hard a job, but if you're not into mechanical stuff get a workshop to do it. Replace both sets of clutch plates at once: there are wearing plates, which have a material on them like brake linings, and driven plates, plain steel plates the other plates push on and drive. If you are going cheap, make it clear you ONLY want the first set of plates changed. Springs are the same- replace for a 'proper job', leave in the old ones if you need to save money or want to get rid of the bike soon.

If you do the job yourself, check the plain steel plates are not warped: place them on a piece of glass. Hold the clutch basket still by wrapping tyre inner tube around it: be careful not to damage it. Don't forget to buy a new clutch cover gasket.

If, on the other hand, the clutch is engaged all the time (no slipping- and effectively no way to disengage the drive without selecting neutral at the gear box) then the clutch plates are sticking together. This often happens if a bike has been sitting. Change the oil and fit new clutch springs.

1978 honda CX500 motor rebuild cost?

Hello, I am looking to buy a 1978 Honda CX500 but the seller says that there is engine noise in the top end and the carbs need rebuilding. if anyone knows what that sound might be or what might need to be fixed, it would be much appreciated. My second option was just taking it to a shop and having the whole motor and carbs rebuilt, does anyone know how much that would cost?

Is a 1980 Honda CX500 a 2 stroke or 4 stroke motorcycle?

I don't even know what a 2 stroke nor a 4 stroke engine are. I mean, I understand their definitions, but I don't comprehend what those definitions actually mean. I do get asked a lot if my motorcycle is a 2 or 4 stroke when researching maintenance tips though, so I need to know.

Loss of power under load on honda cx500 motorcycle?

firstly does bike move freely on wheels if not brakes siezed,
has it been left standing causing carbs to flood , oil level correct ,
is it overheating , is choke releasing , if all of these are ok then something could be worn and as it heats up it is expanding and causing friction drag ,and loss of power
