What is the meaning of the phrase "falling down the rabbit hole"? How did it originate?

The question was - What is the meaning of the phrase "falling down the rabbit hole"? How did it originate? We have to look at where it originated to better explain the meaning. In the original story about Alice by Lewis Carroll - Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland - she sees a rabbit in the garden and quite literally falls down the rabbit hole. What happens after that is the stuff of legend and childhood fantasies. Alice has arrived - to borrow from Jefferson Airplane - in a place ’where logic and proportion have fallen cold and dead.’Project teams and reporters wind up going down rabbit holes, chasing something that looks amazing, if not a white rabbit with a top hat. While the experience could be worthwhile, it tends to distract from the substantial mission of ‘real work.’ I have gone down a few rabbit holes in my day and sometimes have learned amazing things that were actually useful. They did however delay deadline even though some also fixed worthwhile problems. Now you know where the phrase came from. Hopefully if you are a hound on the hunt, you will concentrate on the fox -and not chase the rabbits if they are not the game of the day.

Determine the value of z so that the area under the standard normal curve in the right tail is 0.0079?

Bellatrix

1) Determine the value of z so that the area under the standard normal curve in the right tail is 0.0079

Remember, the standard normal is Perfectly Symmetric, so the area in the right tail and left tail will always result in the SAME z-value except for the sign (+/-)

P(Z < z*) < 0.0079

use your TI-84 invNorm(0.0079,0,1) = -2.4135 and this is the LEFT tail ...

z* = + 2.4135 [RIGHT tail]

2)Find the value of z so that the area under the standard normal curve from 0 to z is 0.4904 (approximately) and z is negative. Round your answer to 2 decimal places.

Since z is negative it is in the LEFT side of the distribution ...

Also, since 0 is the mean and area from 0 to z is 0.4904, then the remaining area on the LEFT side is 0.5 - 0.4904 = 0.0096

P(Z < z*) = 0.0096, so z* = invNorm(0.0096,0,1) = - 2.34

3) Suppose the amount of sun block lotion in plastic bottles leaving a filling machine has a normal distribution. The bottles are labeled 300 millimeters (ml) but the actual mean is 303 ml and the standard deviation is 2 ml.

What is the probability that an individual bottle will contain less than 299 ml?

Round to four decimal places.

P(X < 299) = P[z < (299 - 303) / 2] = P(z < -2) = normalcdf(-E99, -2, 0, 1) = 0.0228

hope that helps

What is the meaning of the lyrics of the song lost stars by Adam Levine?

I’m not a big fan of Maroon 5 and Adam Levine. But this song is just amazing. I was infatuated with this song the first time I listened to it. The lyrics ,the melody ,the song structure is so simple and yet so beautiful. Coming to the lyrics I think everyone has their own interpretations. Here's what I found on the internet . This explanation I think not only deciphers the lyrics but also adds so many layers to it.The obvious symbols in this song are stars, constellations, astrological signs (Aries and Leo). I think this is a story between a sheep and lion representing two lovers. Their love seemed ideal, as compatible together as Aries and Leo in horoscopes, but this song is more about separation of two lovers when they were young (“I thought I heard you out there crying”). The singer now wonders if there can be reconciliation, as he is also feeling regretful (“Just the same”).The song poses a question: No matter the differences between two people, can it ever be that they can still love each other? As it alludes to the Bible, that a lion lie down with a lamb? (“Lion kiss a deer”) There is a similarity here. The answer: Young love can have partners that are selfish, too idealistic, and believing in fate without compromising. Partners break off their relationship then and there. Now when he is older, the singer realizes that the relationship he had before was great, and that a truly ideal lover is rare to find. If fate comes once in a million years, the YOUNG lambs who are “searching for meaning” are wasting their youth trying to find it. They are running from the differences (running from lions in the “hunting season”) when they should actually not run away, and make compromises. In conclusion: Have a little give or compromise in love. Otherwise, it is the common mistake that people make, and become like lost stars. Only a few people will click 100%, like lucky stars in the sky belonging together in a constellation, and who have met fate. The numerous rest of us are just shining. And does it really matter? You can barely tell apart a constellation from the rest of the stars. The lesson is that there is happiness in love even when it’s not perfect.
