House On Mango Street Culture Connections

The House on Mango Street help!!?

Activity Instructions: Sandra Cisneros was born in the 1950's in Chicago, and the book also takes place in Chicago. Although it was published in 1984, it seems to take place sometime in the sixties or early seventies. Your assignment is to research on the Internet and find out the following:

What was going on in Chicago in the late 60's and early 70’s?
What were some common Chicano culture stereotypes that existed during this time frame? What were Mexican-Americans “doing” during this time (working, political involvements, etc)?
What was happening politically in Chicago itself, and around the world? Immigration issues, laws, etc?
As you search for answers to these questions, you should use a range of sources. There are many journals, newspapers, maps, speeches and other media that will help you gain an understanding of the time period and culture that this author is depicting.

The House on Mango Street Group Vignette Assignment?

A popular culture connection (pop culture artifact)
-Find at least one "artifact" or item from pop culture that connects with your chosen vignette. For example, a song (and its lyrics), an advertisement, a short movie clip (and relevant script), and so on.
-Bring in the artifact, describe it, and explain its connection.

This is the project that we have to do about The House on Mango Street, and "No Speak English" is my chosen vignette. I want to find a song that connects to the vignette I chose, can someone please give me some suggestions? Thanks:)

Is Trinidad and Tobago a good place for a vacation?

Hi Maivas229,

This multi-ethnic, rainbow land is also multi-cultural and there r a hosts of ativities u can enjoy all year round depending on when exactly u travel..so visit www.visittnt.com for more info
I have attached some useful links below that will help u!!

T&T is great - just dont be foolish. As long as you act the same as if you were back home in the city ...you know what i mean?

Like everyone else has stated crime is an issue here, just like any other place in the world, but as long as you don't go "wandering" around the city at night, leave your purse/bag/valuables out in the open unsupervised, leave your car unlocked, etc... (the obvious) you should be fine.
The crime is not too bad keep your money in your pocket and your wallet in another. Dont wear a "fanny pack" since that screams complete tourist. :)If you do want to explore the city don't ask a random person on the street, but ask an employee of a store, hotel, taxi driver, tourism officer, etc.
Do this and you'll be safe!

There's a inter-isand ferry that leaves daily to connect both islands as well as airtaxis that connect both...via the newly formed Caribbean Airlines (now defunct BWIA) and Caribbean Star...
Trinidad is more designed for business, the "greatest" carnival on earth, calypso, soca, shopping, a lil ecotourism, some beaches, cricket, culture n cuisine (try the crab n callaloo)
Tobago is know for its beautiful beaches by americans and europeans, friendly people, great culture n cuisine, jazz festival, diving, fishing, ecotourism, a lil shopping, crab n goat race, hiking, waterfalls, etc.

Whatever u do- T&T is the Place 2 Have FUN!!
Hope this helped some, and you enjoy your trip!
Logan (T&T resident for 30 yrs and counting)

What do Indonesians think about Thailand?

Bangkok really looks like Jakarta. As an Indonesian who raised in Jakarta, Bangkok is very similar for me. When I first came to Bangkok alone, I didn't feel like I was in a foreign country. The ambience in Bangkok also familiar; transportations, street food, malls, the people and many more. Actually Bangkok has a better transportations than Jakarta. There are BTS Skytrain to avoid traffic meanwhile Jakarta still struggling to build a proper mass transportation system.Thai people are kind and helpful too. They don't mind giving me some help eventough they don't speak English.Thai food is very delicious. I really love traditional Thai food like Tom Yam, Phad Thai, mango sticky rice, and even the street food is delicious too. It's cheap but the taste is soo good!Ladyboys are very common to see. They are everywhere and it seems like being a transgender is not an issue in there and people should respect each other no matter what. I've seen so many beautiful ladyboys in public and I thought they were female for real untill she/he started to speak in male voice.Bangkok is relatively cheap to buy things and other stuffs. Indonesian people love to go shopping in Bangkok. I've always seen Indonesian tourists buying a lot of things in mall and traditional market.
