You will need at least a Bachelors degree in accounting. The requirements to sit for the CPA exam vary by state, but you will need either 150 hours of college education (what we call a 5th year of accounting). Here are the requirements to become a CPA in Texas.1 Pass the CPA exam. This will be the most difficult part. I recommend taking a review course such as Becker to help prepare you. Then you will have to make this a high priority in your life until you have successfully passed all the parts. Expect this to take at least a year.2. Complete the experience requirements. You can request forms from the TSBPA ( Texas State Board of Public Accountancy ) but it boils down to working under a CPA and having them vouching to that fact.3. The TSBPA will require that you take an ethics exam. This is not that tough and you will have to take it again every two years. The TSBPA will give you more information.4. Have a clean record. Texas requires that you have strong moral character. That means you have not been arrested.Personal history - I had to go to a police station and have them fingerprint me on a TSBPA sheet to be submitted to the FBI in part of the background check. Apparently a desire to be one.I attended one of the best schools in the country specifically to become a CPA. They had a great record for students passing the exam on the first try.I took a test exam and scored well. But...During school I was fortunate to land a job as an Assistant Controller. I had the great fortune to work with CPA's on a regular basis, so I saw the job firsthand. And for me personally, I didn't like it. While I admired many things, I also realized I like more creativity, flexibility, and challenge. I like to create the materials that a CPA uses.To be a CPA you need to work well within rules. You need strong logic skills, patience, focus, and organization, and you need to really like taxes! You are an advisor and leader, so you need confidence too. Being able to read and interpret tax code, and a businesses records also requires some good analytical skills.Clearly it is a great career, just be sure you want to do the job. Granted I never took the exam or did the job, but I'm sure you'll get that side too.Aside from that, a bachelors degree in the area from an accredited university with a good track record for students passing the exam is all you need. You can lookup the requirements for your state online, they do vary some.I do regret sometimes that I didn't just take the exam, but my career has been colorful and challenging! I got what I wanted.

How long does it take to become a CPA?
That depends on which route you want to take in the accounting field. Becoming a CPA does open some doors, specifically in the public accounting arena. But if you do not plan to work in public accounting, either for an established firm or in your own practice, your CPA license may not be worth the time and effort it takes to study and sit for the exam. I have an BBA in Accounting and an MBA in Business Administration. I actually owned and operated my own bookkeeping and tax service for 12 years without a CPA license. The only restriction I had was I could not perform audits, which I had no desire to do anyway. Many of my friends are CPA's and often expressed to me that I had a very successful business without the headaches of license requirements and peer reviews, so why mess with that. I did sit for the exam and actually passed three parts the first try after taking the Becker CPA Review you referred to. I sold my practice and went to work for a publicly held international corporation as an accounting manager, which did not require me to be a CPA and would not have paid me anymore had I been one...
