How Can I Improve My Sitting Posture

Is there a way I could improve my posture?

I'm tall and lanky. For somebody like me, why do I find it so hard to avoid slouching all these years?

I don't want to end up having a hunch on my back at a very young age... I look terrible when I slouch.

As a tall person, how can I improve my sitting posture?

At work, set the desk up with ergonomics in mind. When seated in an adequate chair and looking at the monitor straight ahead, you should be looking at the top 2 inches of the monitor. The goal being to not allow the head to flex forward which will allow the shoulders to roll forward also. Knees should be at 90 degrees as well as the elbows. When not at work, avoid recliners and soft cushy sofas for obvious reasons. When exercising, pay attention to your core but don’t forget to works the back muscles with extension exercises. Be patient.

How do I improve my sitting posture?

A couple of tips for how to properly improve your sitting posture:Make sure to sit on your “sit bones” whenever possible. Specifically the ischial tuberosity, these are the bony structures at the bottom of your pelvis. Most people tend to sit on their tail bones (their coccyx) which puts your spine into a flexed position.Avoid sitting on soft surfaces when possible. A soft surface does little to support your posture and instead absorbs the forces you’re exerting to keep your trunk upright. The mesh ergonomic chairs, I find to be worse for your posture. Mostly because they rob your body of a solid foundation for your spine to sit upright. Imagine trying to build a skyscraper on quicksand.Engage the corset muscles (the transverse abdominus) to shrink wrap your spine and hold it into position. How do you do this? Imagine someone is about to punch you in the gut, the bracing reaction is how to engage these muscles.Using your abs will help your back muscles with keeping you trunk upright, this will allow you to sit longer and not fatigue as quickly.Do all of your work with T-rex arms. Meaning you should keep your elbows tucked against your ribs as much as possible. When you put your keyboard and work too far in front of you, you’re likely to start leaning forward causing more muscular fatigue. Inevitably your muscles will tire out, and your spine will flex forward. At this point your flexed spine is relying on bone instead of muscle to keep you somewhat upright which is bad for your long term spinal health. At minimum stand up for 5 minutes for every 25 minutes of sitting. While sitting with good posture is better than sitting with bad posture. It’s way better to replace sedentary sitting with movement. Standing is a good way to incorporate small movements such as fidgeting and swaying into your day to day. Here are some cues for good standing posture if you’re interested in learning more about maximizing your standing posture. It’ll help you feel more confident and increase the amount of calories passively burned (your basal metabolic rate) which always feels like a WIN!.Hope this all helps with finding the proper sitting posture.Source: Mobility Dojo — How to upgrade your posture to unlock strength and confidence

What is the Best way to improve your posture?

The natural way to improve posture without having to think about it is to strengthen your abdominal and lower back (erector spinae) muscles. Strong abdominals and lower back muscles will naturally improve posture. They are our main antigravity muscles that keep us standing or sitting upright. If these muscles are strong, they will naturally improve your posture. You will not have to remind yourself to check it.

Best of luck and good health.

Are there any good gym exercises to improve sitting posture?

Hi Ryo,you are thinking along the right lines in that you want your body to be able to stay upright and have good posture, rather than rely on outer means like lumbar support. I believe ergonomics and orthotics are great tools when used for a short while but not intended to use on a regular or longer basis. We have to strengthen our body so it can support itself. There certainly are many good exercises out there. But it depends on your posture and functionality.Part of it is a conscious choice to stay active throughout the day.
