Why do some people live off of the government?
Why does the federal government give so much money to people who dont work and aren't even trying to find a job? I don't understand how anyone thinks this is a good thing? I agree we should help people who are having a hard time. But not help them for theyre entire life! I think it just teaches people that they don't need to try and that they can just live off the government. Also i dont understand why we allow illegal immigrants to recieve welfare??? That is the part that makes me the most mad!!! This is not meant to offend anyone.

I am going to dwell on the phrase "and my family members refuse to help" whether you or others on Quora like it or not. What have you done in your life to be 50 years old and only making 21k a year. You are assuming that others who have worked hard to not be in your position should pay for whatever mistakes you have made. Now assuming that you were afflicted by financial or physical difficulties beyond your control then what is your excuse for family members refusing to help. Part of being human is empathy for others, family or not, if they refuse to help then the problem may not be them but you.
Why is the government not supporting living off the grid?
There are a few reasons.The grid may be owned and operated by the government. In which case they get a better return on their investment by everyone using it.The grid might be privatized to a large company. In this case the government has an obligation to ensure the company that bought the grid from them gets the return they were promised.Lastly, the cost of going completely off grid, with the same level of reliability and consistency as the grid is much more expensive than people realize. More specifically to go off grid in a rural area is probably at reasonable cost. Going off grid in a suburban area usually isn't, compared to bench connected. Further, to have a very reliable off grid system from solely batteries and solar panels is more expensive than people realize and more technically complex and difficult. Typicaly if people are trying to go off grid they end up with some components like batteries or inverters or a control system that is insufficient for their needs. With a so if any cost to upgrade. In most cases the government has some loose idea of this and believes it's in the best interest of its people to stay connected. Also the government doesn't want to deal with people without an essential service, like electricity where they have no ability to act. E.g. If you are connected to the grid and can't pay your bills (or just don’t) the government through a variety of means can force/require a power company to continue powering your property. If you are completely disconnected the government has no ability to innfleunce or improve what could be a politically bad situation.
