How Can I Make An Anime Convention More Enjoyable For My Dad Who Is Not A Fan

What can I do to convince my mother that anime is not evil or satanic?

Oh lord. People hate JK Rowling and Harry Potter for the same thing. I'd show her Inuyasha. Like Harry Potter, the show is about magic (well, demons and all) but the themes are friendship, bonds of love, bonds of companionship, and right from wrong. Other anime are about these things. Show her Fruits Baskets. No one could object to a loving and humorous story like that. Try to educate her. Anime is far different from regular cartoons.

Do your parents watch anime?

My mom doesn't watch anime with me. I'm 29 so...yeah. However I do watch Anime with my kids. They are allowed to pretty much watch anything, except hardcore Yaoi, smut and Hentai. Ecchi stuff I don't mind as long as there is not to much nudity, and no smex scenes either. My daughters are 6 and 12. My 6 year old is IN LOVE with Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion. She loves that anime. My 12 year old watches just about anything. I buy them anime, manga, plushies, and anything related to anime. I take them to anime conventions, and we even cosplay. I love making cosplay. It doesn't seem to bother them, that they are doing this with their mom. Well they haven't said anything to me anyway. I know my 6 year old loves it, but my 12 year old is going to be a teenager soon and don't know how long she will continue to like the anime scene or at least the anime scene with her mom.

Are Manga and Anime common in India?

Well being an Anime and Manga buff myself, It all started with DBZ which was played on Cartoon network.( Exactly like 1st season, rerun, 1+2 seasons, 1+2 seasons rerun, and so ontill freeza's death iirc.) And later on there were a few anime which ran on CN. But then again, CN detoriated(personal opinion) and started more inclined to cartoons/ younger age. And I began to grow up!Then came Animax. This channel, my cable service provider made available(for the lack of better word) for exactly one year, after which I almost stopped watching TV. But Animax aired Anime's. I was alone at that time and till I joined IIT, I never met anyone who I can speak to regarding any anime except DBZ. But in the college, Hell broke lose. There were scores of people like me. Some I looked up to as my guides(who introduced me to manga) at that point of time. Then came internet and I was introduced to this awesome world which the channel Animax was nowhere was doing justice. I watched quiet a few series, watched a few more and a few classics (just to gain knowledge like sailor moon,) etc. After I joined office, again I am alone. My anime world revolves now my teammate who is from my college and my college frnds. Most people in India still think anime's are for kids and cannot differentiate between anime and cartoon.Parents do not encourage this, not most of them. I could convince my parents because they thought cartoons was the reason I could speak better english than my counterparts.Manga, I never found, I read from some online sources. But one fine day in a street market, some street vendor had a collection of shonen jumps. He had no idea what they were! He thought they were synonymous to comics...Finally, because movie/TV industry is so huge that most people do not watch anime.tldr; No. People watch anime without realizing it. Very less people know about manga.

What do parents think of anime?

My parents, to start with, prefer me watching cartoons that are ‘suited to my age’ like ‘We Bare Bears’ which most of the teens my age watch. It is a good cartoon though. My parents never watched anime to begin with, and they just think that anime is a little ‘time consuming’ and ‘inappropriate’.Me: Oh, I watched this anime today, and…Mum: Ugh…well, some animes are a little…you know…too grown up…Me: Yes, Mum. I know.Mum: Honey, did you know that Reema’s watching anime?Dad: Really? What, like the Pokémon show or whatever it is? Such a rip-off. They created Pokémon GO, and now they come up with a TV show?Me: Dad, the game came AFTER the anime series. It's based on the Pokémon from the manga as well.Dad: Yeah, yeah. Don't watch it too much. You should be doing other things like revising.Me: I give up.Yep. This is what happens when I try to explain anime to my parents and how they take it.

I'm going to an Anime Con...WITH MY MOM!?

It's normal to go to conventions with your parents. I have tons of friends, some as old as 20, who regularly go to anime cons with one or both parents. It's nothing to be ashamed of. Anyway, every convention I've ever been to where you have to pay to get in requires that 17-and-younger attendees have an over-18 guardian. I don't know how old your friend is. However, if she's also 17 or younger, you'll probably need your mom there as your guardian. If your friend is 18+, however, she can be your guardian. You may be able to use this in an argument to keep your mom from going if you already have a guardian.

Also, even if there's Dr. Who stuff, she'd need a badge to see most of it. A badge costs money. Ask her if she's willing to pay for a day pass just to see a panel or two on Dr. Who.

But, in the end, you don't necessarily HAVE to explore the con together. She can do her Dr. Who stuff while you go to all of your anime panels. Even if she's your guardian, you don't have to be together. Every convention I've gone to just states that the guardian just needs to stay at the convention for as long as the attendees are there. Doesn't say anything about them having to be attached at the hip for the entire convention. But yeah. Just go do your own thing and pretend she isn't even there. It's not too difficult. And then you'll even get an easy ride home in the evening. ^^

How to explain to a parent what anime really is?

That's not true. Alot people still watch anime regardless if they are adults, kids, teenagers, or any age they are. I'm an adult and I still watch anime, play video games, collect anime and stuff, and draw anime. Because it's one of my hobbies and I do all that stuff because I wanted to be an animator. People like your dad say that stuff probably because one, they don't like anime and cartoons; two, they probably don't understand; or three, something else whatever made them think like that.

You can tell them because you like and it's hobbies. My mother is not a big fan of all the anime that I watch, but she lets me choose whatever I want to watch only because I like it and I have the right to choose to watch whatever is my kind of taste. However, my mom doesn't like me watching porn and i don't like to watch them either because makes me feel uncomfortable.

If anyone has the right to watch any of the shows that grabs their interest, then so can you.

Why do "Anime Lovers" hate Dragonball Z?

Whenever I go to Anime Conventions I always hear hardcore cosplayers talking about how much they hate Dragonball Z, and I love Dragonball Z, so I wore a a DBZ shirt to an Anime Convention once, and these fat cosplayers were laughing at me telling me it's not real anime and that dragonball, dragonball z, dragonball gt sucks. Then they asked me what else do I watch, and I said Bleach and they laughed even more and were like "facepalm" "dude watch some real anime"

What is that supposed to mean? I thought DBZ is an anime!? =S DBZ, pokemon, digimon, etc were the first anime I have ever seen cause I live in North America...

I think DBZ is one of the greatest Anime ever because it's probably the only Anime show that kept me wanting more, everyday I would come home from school and rush to the TV to watch DBZ, and I was so addicted to it, I would draw DBZ characters in class cause they were so simple to draw.

Anyways. I Love DBZ <3
