When you put your phone in plane mode there are no signals coming into or out of your phone and thus it would not interfere with the plane’s navigational systems which otherwise would have as phones try to check presence of signals every now and then even if you are in a no signal (no range) area. That is why phones have plane mode in which one can play games, listen to music or check messages already stored in the phone.When you land and put your phone back to normal mode the phones tries to pick up signals and show you your operators signal. All pending sms messages are send to the phone by the mobile phone system and you receive it as your are in regular or phone mode.
