i have a group of friends from work and we hang out a lot outside of work. one of the guys i hang out with asked me if i would hook him up with a date with my friend. i said "oh she's not really the dating type" and he was like "just like you." i was a little insulted because it's not that i don't like dating it's just i haven't had much time for it. so then i got a little defensive and said "i'm the dating type i just haven't gone on dates lately" . i was a little surprised in response when he was like "oh ok , well then will you go on a date with me?" he is very insecure and accompanied this with the "do you think i'm attractive" question. i said yes to be nice because i'm really not that attracted to him and then he was like oh well i'm attracted to u too. then i told him that it would be too weird since we work together and he got all butthurt & went up to everyone and was like, "i had a bad day, vicky said no to a date with me". how do i say no w/out hurting his feelings?

My sister was celebrating her 24th birthday at a bar, but was in no mood to pay for 15 people's booze. So all we did was write,..‘Ps: Food is on me’.. towards the end of the invite which indicated subtly that you'll have to pay for your booze. And as far as the food was concerned, we ordered finger food as appetizers and pizzas as main course items. It all panned out quite well!

You could go for: Classical: "Festina Lente" - literally "Hurry Slowly" but more akin to the English saying "More speed, less haste" [1]. Honest: "You need to work faster" [plus - very important - why they need to do so!]. Diplomatic (at the expense of straight talking): "Work Smarter", by which you mean more efficiently, that is to say faster and with less wasted effort but is a less direct way of saying so (for better and for worse). Needless to say, I prefer door #2 above; life is too short and grown ups don't need to have things sugar coated. What they need is to be treated like adult human beings and understand the business imperatives behind the need to work fast. If they don't accept those imperatives after they have been clearly communicated, you have a bigger problem than your selection of what words to use....
