How Can I Stop Living Vicariously Through Other People On Social Media

In my personal opinion, absolutely. In fact not only binge watching, but constantly thinking about a TV show or the lives of the characters on it can be an extremely bad habit, I should know as this is something I do personally. Forms of media such as shows, movies, etc. are meant to be forms of entertainment that can transport the audience out of their lives for a short period of time and enjoy the exciting and adventurous lives of those on the big and small screen. Now, with services that offer unlimited access to thousands of different shows all from your computer, it makes it easier to completely forget about our sometimes uninteresting lives and immerse ourselves completely in the fictitious lives of others. To be honest, this type of obsession with TV shows can really damage a person’s social life but one way to get out of the habit it to remember that the people you watch on screen are just actors, their real lives aren’t even close to what we see. It’s also important to keep in mind that life is about living your own life to fullest, and constantly spending time binge watching isn’t the way to do it.

I realized what it meant once I saw my husband try to get my son to play hockey.  My husband had wanted to play hockey as a kid but didnt get to.  My son was five years old and my husband ignored everything we knew about this little boy.  He was very athletic but hated skating or having slippery feet.  He hated to go fast or be reckless or incautious.I could see the desperation as my husband tried everything, and as my son dug in his heels.  It was a tremendous effort to live out a dream through someone else.  But no luck.To this day, my son doesnt like skating and is very cautious whenever his father brings up the idea of going skating for fun.  Lesson learned.

Why do we idolize the wrong people?

This has never been more true than it is today

entertainment and advertising and just plain outright wasteful uses for resources surround us at every turn there is no escape from it every single aspect of our lives is marketed to and people eat it right up no one questions why or even cares for that matter meanwhile small towns disappear and our cities fall into deplorable living conditions becoming increasingly worse each year with millions out of work and more jobs being shut down everyday as the overall health and morale of the people is steadily declining

all the while entertainment and home/personal technology has completely taken over our lives and not just on a personal level on a whole social level people have become so "connected" that it seams we as a whole blindly follow whatever we are told through all possible forms of media

i see no end to this until people stand up and reject being force fed social standards and begin caring more for the betterment of mankind and less about the latest piece of tech or media

Persons that choose to do this are in a really dry place. I think it's selfishness to an extent. If you choose to live vicariously, you are lazy about developing your thoughts and level of creativity. You find it easier to leach onto and talk about others peoples thoughts, emotion, and adventures comfortably claiming them inwardly as your own. People can spend a lot of time collecting data from one person just to have something to talk about with someone else they care about.

Why did people used to make watch executions like it was something fun?

Public executions served to unite people. it confirmed that justice would be done, that the breaking of secular and/or religious laws would incur the punishments deserved, and that the state or church in fact had that power. "good" people could come together to watch the executions, knowing they were being protected(and warned) by the executions.
Often the convicted persons were dehumanized before the execution, spoken of as animals, evil, or even demonic creatures not worthy of human sympathy or pity. So public gatherings and celebrations of their executions not only saw justice done, and united people by a common concept of justice, but allowed bystanders to become a vicarious part of the system, doing their part to overthrow the evil threatening their societies.
And to be fair, there is a certain aspect to it that makes sense. If people are going to accept a death penalty, the citizens who are part of the system have a responsibility to see the system through to the end. Rather than hiding the final act of justice behind closed doors, public executions makes sure each citizen realizes the true consequences of their acceptance of the death penalty. While the vast majority of executions through history have been acclaimed by the witnesses, there have been isolated instances where executions have been botched, or so crudely done, that the crowd actually protested, in words, if not in acting to put a stop to the events.
And yes, some people simply enjoy watching people suffer. Others may not enjoy it, but become inured to the sight, and distract from any discomfort by engaging in socializing with other spectators. As for the Romans, they were in a class by themselves. Not only were the executions entertainment, but were often set up to act out historic events or legends from Roman history, serving a dubious educational purpose as well as pleasing the crowds.

Do people not care about celebrities anymore?

When they have tons of social media out there for the whole world to see, what's the point? Plus, the word celebrity is thrown around so loosely nowadays, it's impossible to keep track. Who I consider a celebrity may be considered the same by the vast majority of people, but then you have 20 year olds claiming @SluttyMcSlutSlut/instaCRAP a HUGE celebrity...K...

This is something I’ve always been very wary about. I typically only post about my travels after a trip has taken place. Otherwise, it becomes a security issue. The internet is open to everyone, regardless of your privacy settings. If you go off about leaving on a month or even week long trip somewhere, you are definitely jeopardizing your safety and privacy. Why do you need the world to know when you’re away? Why not post about how amazing it was upon your return instead? In today’s world, this is not something you want to gamble with.
