How to ask my boss or a day off?

So, my boss makes my schedule a couple days in advance of the week. And he is flexible with days I need to take off, but I need to tell him before he makes the schedule. The problem is, my Dad surprised me with concert tickets but I have to work. I am so so sad because I hardly ever get to see my Dad and I would do anything to get this day off. I already tried swapping shifts with coworkers and everyone's busy. Is it okay to go to my boss with the issue and tell him whats going on? I really don't want to upset him! How should I go about this? I don't want it to be a sob story, It just means a very lot to me!

Boss asked me to work on my day off?

So I work 4 10 hour days a week. My boss' daughter was in the hospital briefly this week in the evening and he said she might have to go back - when I heard that, I told him that I'd be willing to help out or come in on Friday if there was an issue.

Well, she did not have to go to the hospital, and yet at the end of the day Thursday, my boss comes in and asks me to come in today, which I did.

I sorta feel like he was taking advantage of my offer of generosity. I've already been here half a day and I'm tempted to leave soon - is there a way to do this without coming off like an ***? It's my day off, I'm salary, and I'm getting nothing out of this right now - I understand that sometimes you work overtime in a salary job - I'm fine with that, but there's no business emergency here, my work that was due for the week was done, and I feel like I'm just working for free essentially right now.

As other people have noted, your boss has no business asking you that question. How to ask my boss for a day off?

Then you should have taken a personal day. All you did was request a day off; there's a big difference between the two. If you don't have personal time, then that went into the equation too. If you did ask for it as a personal day and it was declined, your boss is still able to do it. A lot of people who have never done scheduling don't have the faintest clue of how much goes into it.

Your boss remembers that you wanted that day off, and will remember when you call out. If I was your boss, and you called out, then I am taking the next step in progressive discipline that needs to be taken in regards to your attendance. If you can switch with someone that's fine, but your boss still needs to approve that switch and he/she is not obligated to do so.

Legally, your employer is on a good footing, I'm afraid. But he's still a jerk.

Only really relevant if you're in the UK, of course.

Just let him know your true reason.If he is not receptive to your true reason, you might be in the wrong company.

How to ask for a day off from work?

In the state of our world everything is uncertain. including tomarrow. If you have an event or experience that is very important to you personally and will not beable to recreate anytime soon..
I would say be upfront and take the risk. yes i may completly screw up your life if you get fired but i truly belive we are here on earth for experience not to drone away behind a desk. This is the task to the servant of the goverment, the only true devil. They are experiencing things that you cant even dream of. They know the things you dont. We are in a scence slaves. He/She is your Boss, and you are no one than a normal employee as others.What that means? You are not the only one who is taking a day off.
