How Do I Bond My Two Rabbits

How can I bond all three of my rabbits?

The following advice is pretty general and can apply to bonding between a pair of bunnies as well as a trio:First, make sure that all three rabbits have been properly neutered or spayed. This is the critical step; without doing this, you can't successfully bond adult rabbits. After the rabbits have been fixed, then you will need to wait another month or so for the remaining hormones to dissipate and for the bucks to stop being fertile (live sperm remains in the bucks' systems for up to a month, and since rabbit does are induced ovulators, the very act of mating can trigger ovulation and lead to pregnancy). Then you can start, but the bonding process will have to be taken with deliberation. If you're lucky, the rabbits will all take to one another right away and it won't take long to form a close emotional connection among the trio. What's more likely, though, is a drawn-out process marked by displays of dominance, aggression and affection. You will need to be ready to step in immediately and break up fights (do it gently, but wear protective clothing including gloves and long sleeves) if they occur, because really serious fights can permanently ruin the prospects of bunnies' establishing a close relationship.Start with short sessions in a neutral area (one not marked as any of the rabbits' territory; rabbits generally "chin", poop or urinate to mark territory, though urination to mark territory is uncommon after spaying/neutering), observe the way your bunnies interact with one another, and always make sure to end each session on a positive note. You can increase the length of the bonding sessions as the buns become friendlier with one another, taking care to continue to monitor them, until they're regularly cuddling with and grooming one another.

Can two rabbits live in the same cage?

Make sure that when you buy them at the pet store that they are already together in the same cage. If not, get them speyed. And you have to know if they are both female or male because if they aren't the female will give birth and may die if she is too young. Make sure they are almost the same age/size. If they aren't the bigger one might attack the smaller one.
The best thing to do is get 2 rabbits that were in the same cage at the pet store. If they are attacking each other you should let them bond together by putting them both in an place they have never been in before. Or you can always take a 10 minute drive because they will both get stressed and they might bond.

Is it too late to bond with my rabbit?

Older rabbits are actually much easier to train than babies. Not being neutered may or may not have an effect -- depends on the individual rabbit. Some rabbits exhibit highly hormonal behaviors (grumpiness, growling, lunging, biting, spraying urine), while others do not.

If your male is more mellow and doesn't exhibit those behaviors, then bonding should go well. Just bear in mind that only some rabbits will sit on a lap. Rabbits have moods that change throughout the day. There are times they won't want to be bothered and times they will be receptive to affection. They let you know by their body language.

I have a page on my website that details how to bond with your bunny. There is also a link to learning bunny body language. Both of these should help you to bond with your rabbit.
