How Do I Dehumidify My Home

Will a dehumidifier get rid of some bugs?

No, The only thing you can do is hire someone to come remove the bugs permanatly. It may sound gross but the bugs you kill have been there long enough to lay eggs so that explains why they keep coming around the same time of year. I had the same problem except it was always the winter time because they needed a place when it was cold. So I called a pest control & I havent had a problem yet. :)

What is the best way to dehumidify a basement without a dehumidifier?

If increased electricity bills or a tight budget is keeping you from buying a dehumidifier, you can try the following 3 methods;1. Improve the air flow: Use a fan to remove dampness because moving the air helps reduce water vapor. You can use a window fan if your basement has a window. Also, keep the windows open when there is less moisture outside.2. Absorb the moisture: Keep some desiccant containers in the basement since they can remove moisture from the air with calcium chloride, which is a crystal salt. You can get them from hardware suppliers. Check out the containers once a week to remove the collected water and add more containers/desiccants if needed.3. Dry the air: Run a space heater or wood stove, if possible. A warm room has reduced humidity if the heat source isn't from gas. You can also use a fan while warming the basement for better results. But the market has many great, budget-friendly dehumidifiers to offer, especially made for basements. You can also try them out.

Is it possible to dehumidify the basement and the rest of the house with one whole house dehumidifier?

Maybe.Yes, there are whole house dehumidifiers. And, as another answer points out, air conditioning also removes moisture from the air. However . . .The answer really depends on the source of the moisture and the quantity. And, bluntly, a lot of times a whole house dehumidifier can’t do the job. Wet (moist/humid) basements are usually due to moisture from the outside finding its way in. Poured or block foundations are porous. They’re not waterproof. If you have a lot of water on the outside, especially under pressure, that’s likely to get inside. Even if there aren’t cracks or gaps in the foundation, it can seep through. And you’ve got a moist basement. There are a lot of different solutions—from sump pumps to “French drains” and more. It depends on where the water is coming from, and how much there is.In some cases, it might just involve some outside landscaping—essentially making sure that water is running away from your house, not toward it—coupled with effective gutters and downspouts. What you really need is someone who’s reputable (not all moisture remediation services are) and who isn’t stuck on just selling a single solution regardless of your problem. And maybe you won’t need any of those. But you should understand what’s causing the problem before either buying something that’ll turn out to be ineffective or spending far more than you have to if the problem really is simple.

Will lighting a candle 'dehumidify" a room?

No... a candle won't make any difference, besides providing a bit of light, a minuscule amount of heat, and a risk of a house fire.Honestly, a small humidifier would be the best option. But, if you're really set against that, use a desiccant... like kitty litter or silica gel crystals. XD Air circulation is a big part, too. Will a dehumidifier help cool my house?

DRY AIR FEELS COOLER TO THE HUMAN BODYA dehumidifier will not cool your house. There will be energy converted from electricity to both a hot and cold coil and the cold coil will condense liquid water out of the moist air. The hot side of the two coils will give off extra heat and raise the temperature of the air inside your house (very slightly).HOWEVER…. if the air is really humid to start with, then the HEAT INDEX that makes you feel hot and sweaty is higher than the temperature of the air. When the humidity goes down YOU feel cooler because the sweat on your body evaporates more easily than before you turned on the dehumidifier.Animals that do not sweat do not feel the humidity in the air as much as humans.

A teacher of an HVAC class brought his students to my at my request. *He cut off the fresh air intake above the A coil explaining that the a/c would be more efficient. My home has been state inspected.
I am most comfortable with humidity below 40% as I suffer from sweats due to an auto-immune disorder. Yes, I drink much water.
I have several types of air purifiers in my home & change the best type of filter each month. I’ve had qualified HVAC techs check the system. One recommendation was an intake vent installed above the filtered A-coil area. Ducts have been cleaned and repaired. A dehumidifier? No mold is present on walls, grout, etc.
