How Do I Do Light Painting

How Can I Do Light Painting?

1. The link you gave has so many different styles of light painting.

2. You need to start off basic, and know your settings (how to use the manual settings) on the camera.

3. You will need a tripod.

4. Slow shutter speed is what you will be using. Slowing the shutter to 30 seconds or more.

5. You can use all kinds of light sources. Such as candles, sparklers, flash lights, Christmas lights, or glow sticks.

6. You, an assistant, or both will be in the screen when painting with light.

7. A simple first try at painting with light.

a) Get a flash light cover the end with a piece of tin foil and poke a few hole in the foil to allow some light out when on.
b) Mount the camera on a tripod at about your belly button height.
c) Focus the lens on an object about 10 feet away. Where you will be painting with light.
d) Switch the lens to manual after focusing.
e) Ensure the area will be dark. Test shoot the camera to see how it looks with just the light already in the area.
f) Ready to give it a go, press the shutter release, get to the focus mark, turn on the light, point it to the camera, make a circle, turn off the light.
g) You should be able to all that in 30 seconds.
h) look at what you have captured, just experiment.

Advanced:
Singer is made by making a wire figure and attaching light such as Christmas led lights.
The figure is turned on, left standing for a few seconds, then pushed over, and left laying for a few seconds.
Turned off then placed in a new location, repeated.

How to do Light Painting with a Canon 550D?

I have a Canon 550D, I don't have a remote timer for it, but I could buy one. I am trying to do Light Painting, I've read and seen so many tutorials but the only ones for a Canon 550D are never clear enough.
I have been trying to do this for about an hour, here is one that I just did.. but unfortunately it did not work.

This camera does have a bulb setting, but I don't understand how to use it, I put it on BULB setting and added a 2 second timer (on the camera) but it would not take a photo. I also tried using 30 second Shutter speed, 20, 15 etc but when I change the Shutter speed the photo is either too dark or too light, so I change the Aperture and ISO too (is ISO supposed to be on 100?) but nothing seems to work.
Can someone please tell me what ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture it should be on to light paint?

This could be the reason why it was not working though- My room is not DARK, I just closed the curtain but was using a white wall so I will try again at night when it is dark. Also, I was using a phone not a torch. I will buy a torch tonight and try again.

Really hope that you can answer this! Thanks for reading.

How to do light painting photography?

Sounds like you're asking about "light graffiti".

Put your camera on a tripod, and use either the self timer or an external shutter release.
Set your camera to a long exposure (say between 15 and 30 seconds, although you might want it much longer than that, depending on your project). Not all little P&S cameras can do this. The shorter time you have, the more limited you are in what you can do with it.
Refer to your manual if you don't know how to do something - you should know that book inside out, anyway (if you lost it, download a new one from the manufacturer).

Make sure you are in a very dark room/area. It helps to have an assistant dressed in dark clothes - less chance of showing up in the shot. Use pretty much any light source you can think of, experimenting with it is fun. Also play with different ISOs and apertures to see the differences there. It will turn out a good learning experience, as well.

So once everything is set up and ready, click your shutter button/timer and have your assistant move around with the light source. Have fun trying to make different designs, all the way from some random squiggle to carefully planned and executed designs.

P.S. Some people call it "painting with light" which is actually a very different technique. Here is an amazing video about it: http://fstoppers.com/night-photography-h...
