How Do I Get Child Support Stopped

If I owe back child support, can I be stopped from obtaining a passport, leaving the U.S. to travel the world, or immigrating to another country?

Indeed.  There are actually very few things that can prevent a U.S. citizen from getting a passport, but owing over 2.5k on back child support is one of the most common.  And without a U.S. passport, it will be difficult for you (presumably a U.S. citizen) to travel or immigrate anywhere. The child support collection process is automated to the extent that a passport will be denied to a non-custodial parent in arrears, without any additional paperwork.  In other words, nobody lifts a finger and the ban shows up in the system as soon as one crosses the 2.5k USD threshold. In my experience, most non-custodial parents who find themselves in this situation are able to get out of dodge by either contacting and negotiating directly with the custodial parent (not always feasible or advisable), or by providing evidence for an amendment to the original court order of support (usually based on a material change of circumstances).  Thanks for the A2A, User-11978101981914353371.

Can we get the garnishment for child support stopped?

Our job at Wal-Mart first didn't charge him ANYTHING for the garnishment and then they started to charge $2 a pay check and then as of the first of February they started charging $5 a pay check for the garnishment. Is there anyway that we can get the garnishment stopped and maybe do an automatic debit from his checking account?? This is just majorly annoying!! And with the way money is now (extremely tight) paying $5 a paycheck is too much for us!! That is $130 a year on top of the child support!!

How do we stop Child Support Payments?

My husband and I decided to move my 4 year old step-daughter in with us she has been living with us since January '07. We moved her in because her mother refused to put her in school and her mother has a total of 6 kids living in a two bedroom apartment ( with her "fiance"). Her mother is also a professional public aid recepient and has not worked the entire time I've known her. My husband still has child support payments being deducted from his paycheck. I realize he will stay have to pay back child support but how do we stop this. PLEASE HELP

How can stop interest on child support?

Depends on the state. I've stopped child support payments for clients (dads) in California when they lose their job or go to prison, but that only covers future payments of support. Interest owed on past support is different. You might be able to stop it, you might not. Some states have periodic amnesty-type programs where interest can be waived or cleared. I don't know the specifics since I've only seen these programs from afar. My guess is that it matters whether the principal owed is to the other parent or to the state. Not sure how practical this is, but you could try contacting the Child Support Agency in your county or state to see if they have any way of stopping the interest. Be prepared to explain, though, why you want the interest stopped. A substantive reason will be better than just saying you think that the interest amount is outrageous. Hope that helped. Andy

When does child support stop in Texas?

Texas Family Code Section 154.006 says:(1) the marriage of the child;(2) the removal of the child's disabilities for general purposes;(3) the death of the child;(4) a finding by a court that the child:(A) is 18 years of age or older; and(B) has failed to comply with the enrollment or attendance requirements described by Section 154.002(a);(5) the issuance under Section 161.005(h) of an order terminating the parent-child relationship between the obligor and the child based on the results of genetic testing that exclude the obligor as the child's genetic father; or(6) if the child enlists in the armed forces of the United States, the date on which the child begins active service as defined by 10 U.S.C. Section 101.For most people the problem is the enrolled in school past 18 provisions. There are a number of kids who are never going to graduate and don’t attend programs, yet they remain enrolled because the custodial parent doesn’t want the child support to end.

What age will my dad stop paying child support?

I have just turned 18 and live in Alabama and my dad pays $1500 a month in child support. I am currently in high school. I will start college in the fall and he says that when I turn 19 he can stop paying child support to me. Should he have to keep paying until I graduate college? Also, he says if he pays things like tuition or other college fees then that counts as child support and he won't have to pay. Anyone have any answers about this?

Can I restart child support?

Yes you can. No you did not burn any bridges. Believe it or not this happens more often that you think. Depending on how long the order has been stopped ( did you just ask for it last month, or week) will depend on how upset the worker is with you. But the long and short of it is that no matter what, that child deserves their child support from the absent father. Go and ask to have the case reinstated.

Also it is not just marriage or legal separation that determines child support. A mother (or father) can have a child support order on a person even if they were never married. It also would not make one hill of beans difference if the 2 of you had gotten married during the time the child support was suspended. NOTHING negates the right to child support. NOTHING!

What are some ways to get out of child support?

This answer is coming from a single parent, a Mom who never received one dime of child support, because my ex told his lawyer; “How do I know my money is being spent on my child and not on her?”I was a single Mother, working and raising my daughter alone. My boyfriend, walked out on us 9 months after she was born. He never wanted kids and still acted like a teenage boy, who wanted to screw anything in a skirt.I took him to court and he was forced to pay $300/month. He immediately quit his job and moved away. I found out later, that he had a new girlfriend and worked at a night-club for cash only.Again, I went after him for non-payment and my lawyer contacted his employer and he was fired. So he simply got another part-time job painting houses, where he insisted on being paid in cash. After awhile, I simply gave up and he was free to live his life.I realize that most people try to defend their point of; “why should I have to pay child support?” Also, there are several postings which I agree with, however the sad truth is that MOST dead-beat parents are men, and these men feel they shouldn’t have to pay. But, it takes two-to-tango - so stop blaming the wives and girlfriends for getting pregnant. Raising a child alone costs a lot of money!Rent $$$Utilities $$$Food $$$Reliable Car & gas for that vehicle & Insurance $$$Entertainment $$$School supplies $$$Clothing $$$I was able to find a good-paying job, a low-rent complex, where I rented a very nice townhouse, I bought a reliable used car and I had the support of my family. I am (most definitely) not a bad parent, I worked and raised my child, and I stayed home on Saturday nights, while my friends were out having fun and I was and still am a good Mother. My dead-beat boyfriend never paid me a dime of child support. I also found out that he has (6) children with (6) different women. Note ( he told me he never liked wearing a condom?) So, I guess I feel bad for those other women who thought they could change him, and I know that he’s not paid them either.Sorry men, but if you chose you have sex, then you need to PAY !

How can I stop child support payment in memphis,tn?

Thx. for the feed back, but I was just hoping not to go back to court, the system is not very nice to men. I have never missed a payment in four years, but the fact is my son is now living with me and the support is still taken from me. I'm not going to place her in the system I just want the support to stop without going to a lawyer. Has anyone had support stopped without a lawyer?

How can the custodial parent stop child support?

My daughter got behind on child support because she was addicted to drugs. She was homeless and doing anything she could to have a place to stay for even a night or two. When she finally went into rehab she called me one day, begged me to get the back child support off her back. Someone had been arrested, out of REHAB! that day and taken to jail for back support. Their kids were placed in DHS custody and they were facing months and months of jail. They had no money at all. They were all in similar circumstances.SO I went to the child support enforcement offices and requested they forgiver her back child support and cancel the court order for her to pay any child supportI signed a paper and they went and got a judge to sign off on the order. She was free and clear within hours of me starting this process. She is married now and has 4 of her children living with her. I still have part of the ones I was raising. I still don’t go after her for child support because she’s barely making ends meet, even with the jobs they have they get food stamps and the kids get state medical cards. So I don’t make her pay child support. She will do whatever she can to help us if money is tight.
