Above is one of my more recent drawings. I've been drawing manga/anime for about 6 years now, and I still have much to learn. For the record though, I'm self taught. I'm sure if you had someone to teach you it would be faster to develop your own style.

Try looking at the how to draw anime by by Chris Hart, I find those good references. Also, don't be ashamed to use reference pictures for various poses. For me my weakness is drawing hands/feet as well as designing clothes for my characters to wear.

I'd like to see your work to sometime

Is drawing anime/manga hard? or is it easy to learn?

It takes practice, but if you do have a skill in drawing then it would be easier for you. If you are considered amateur in drawing then this would indeed take a lot of patience and practice. No matter what happens when doing something new, it would require a bit of practice.

How do I start out drawing anime/manga?

It takes time. But i guess you have heard , ‘PRACTICE MAKES A MAN PERFECT’.Anime is just the abreviated word of animation. The drawing is known as manga.A manga drawing by a professionalSo what is manga? Its just the abreviated (simplified ) form of a human body and a unique art style used in japanese comics(This is also known as manga). To learn manga you just need very simple steps.Learn the anatomy of human body. Why? It helps to draw. A man’s and women’s body differ a lot after all. But knowing the anatomy will make you understand which body parts is like what for which sex. For example in a female body, hips are wider than the shoulder while in male its opposite.Try learning how to draw the head first, from every angle, with every facial expressions possible. Then go for the torso, then hands, legs and last try drawing the whole body when you are ready. After you have learnt how to draw the body, start with the props. It seems easy but their is a lot about science here. And finally comes inking. So there are many things that are required.Pencil and eraser ofcourse.Micron pens. They come with different nib width. In case you dont know what they are is the pic.In case you want to be a professional, then this are the other things required.G penInkWhite ink penB4 paperScreentonePaper cementPaper cutterAnd the list goes on. (For Manga Artist:) How did you learn to draw manga/anime?

Well i started out observing manga books and copying the pictures there for practice. I was fascinated with the artwork from D.N. Angle. ^_^

But as time goes on, you'll realise that alot of the times when you draw something, it turns out rather 'off'. What I, and alot of manga and anime artists now, don't realise is that before you can learn to draw great manga, you have to learn how to draw the human figure.

Manga and anime is essentially an extremely simplified and stylized version of the human figure. Some people will say that you don't need to learn it, just draw! Don't be fooled. How can you learn how to draw manga hands, feet, body if you don't even know how the actual human body looks like and how to draw it. =)

Yes it may be extremely tough, but the results are well worth the effort! >=3 If you're serious I highly recommend that you take up learning how to draw proper anatomy as well as learning how to draw manga. Deviantart has plenty of in depth, high quality tutorials on human anatomy and manga.

You may question the relevance of drawing realistic humans when you want to draw cute anime characters. ^_^ trust me, the same logic will apply.

So I hope that this has helped you and you can check out my website on tutorials for anime eyes (which is the only thing under my anime tutorials section at the moment ^_^") Keep in mind to use reference pictures often and keep practicing! =D

Happy Drawing!

Can you learn to draw anime by copying pictures in the manga?

I've been drawing picture's from manga books that i have. so can you learn to draw by doing that, or do you have to do more than that? If you're good at drawing it, is that how you learned? Am i just being a copycat and wasting my time not learning how to draw?

Are there any good online courses on learning how to draw manga?

There are many online resources from which you can learn how to draw in the manga style. I find youtube tutorials most useful. Here are some channels which teaches useful skills for drawing manga:Whyt Manga: channel owned by the creater of Apple Black manga. He gives tips on the designing process as well as the drawing process.Caped Baldy: uploads stream recordings of Yusuke Murata, artist of One Punch Man and Eyeshield 21, working on mangaMark Crilley: author of Brody's Ghost, Miki Falls, and Akiko. does some manga related tutorials, but helps more on character design, story, etc, as well as general drawing lessons. My Mangaka LIFE: author of Sacred. Does some manga related tutorials.Natalia Batista: author of Sword Princess Amaltea. Doesn't have lots of videos, but what is uploaded is quite detailed.Sycra: teaches lots of stuff about drawing in general, including coloring, foreshortening, character design, and anatomy. There are also other websites where you can find helpful drawing tips such as Deviantart and Pinterest. Just type in what you want to know and tutorials by different people will appear.

I am trying to learn manga drawing, is there a good tutorial or website to learn anatomy and body proportions?

Here are some:AnatoRef tumblr blog: provides reference for all sort of stuff, from humans to creatures to cars, etc.markcrilley youtube channel: a really fun guy, he explains the stuff clearly and also teaches some basics like crosshatching and shading. He used to make more anime/manga related content, but his current videos still help a lot in drawing.Sycra youtube channel: might not be as fun and interesting as Mark Crilley, but he explains everything very deeply. Other than drawing videos, he also makes videos on how to stay inspired, character design process, etc. Recently, he started doing some art critiques (I think you can pay for critique) and watching them helps a lot in noticing your own mistakes. There are some good tutorials by Tracy, creator of the webcomic Lackadaisy:Lackadaisy ConstructionPosesLackadaisy ExpressionsYou can find lots of tutorials from different artists in Pinterest.Remember, as Mark Crilley usually says, there is no correct way of drawing manga. There are so many styles you can try or create, and people draw the way they are most comfortable.

How can I learn to get good at drawing anime/manga styled artwork, and how long will this take?

For me, the best way is to practice daily and use your favourite anime/manga art styles as references. From there, you can work it up by giving your art your own spin once you have mastered the basics. As for how long it will take, well that depends on you. If you practice daily, maybe 1 year or two enough or else it may stretch out to about 5 - 6 years but that's just me.
