Should I install Ubuntu on my Windows 7 laptop as dual-boot or using VirtualBox?

There are two types of dual boot you need to be aware of, and they both have their issues.First is the WUBI type, where you run your Ubuntu Live Disk from Windows and install that way.  This basically installs a virtual computer inside Windows, but acts as a dual boot.  It's nice and easy, but if you do this, DON'T UPDATE!  I have had regular issues in which the update breaks the GRUB, or boot file, making your Ubuntu load useless, unless you are skilled at working with the GRUB file.  This is like a true dual boot, but is a little slower since it is actually running out of Windows. The second type is where you carve out a chunk of hard drive as a new partition, and install Ubuntu on that.  It may take a little effort and some research, but I have never had a problem. This is my preferred method.  It is stable, secure and has sole use of the computer's resources, so it's your fastest option. You create a new partition from in Windows.  This will ensure that your data is protected.  No need to format.Boot your computer with the live disk, then install using the utility.  You may need to manually create the various partitions required, there are two or  three you will need (root, swap and data).  Install normally. How do I partition my hard drive to manually install Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8?The third option is to use a virtual machine. This is fine if you want to run both Windows and Linux at the same time, or just want to test it out.  I do this once in a while when I want to see what I can do and if I break it, I just re-attach a copy. This is, however, REALLY SLOW, and I don't recommend this for a full use computer, unless you have a souped up box with way to much speed and RAM!  This is not the option if you want to run video or games.  It basically shares Windows' resources, and you don't get the full speed you would normally expect.

How can I install Windows 10 on my laptop with Linux pre installed?

As mentioned by Tim Elliot, installing Windows will wipe out anything on your hard drive. If you partion your drive using gparted while in Linux, shrinking the Linux partition to allow for a second partition might work, but it is a complicated process. You will have to reboot your laptop to the Windows installation media (CD or USB) and install Windows to the unformatted partition. The installer will ask you to format (prepare) the partition, then proceed with the installation as usual. You will then have both a Linux and Windows Operating System on your laptop. But to boot into Linux you will need to figure out how to reinstall then run Grub at boot. To do that you will have to... OK. I admit it. It can't be done. I've tried. It's hopeless.Just install Windows 10 to the laptop. Then reinstall Linux using your choice of flavor (distribution) from an online source like Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Bodhi, etc. If your laptop came with a installer CD, use that. The installer will walk you through an easy, though sometimes nerve-racking process that will eventually leave you with a fully functioning dual-boot system you will be absolutely proud of.
