How Do I Keep Deer Out Of My Landscaping Plants

Is there anything out there to keep deer from eating my plants other than 8 foot fence?

My neighborhood is overrun by deer.Shy of hunting them down like the 150 pound rats that they are, here are a few things that have worked for me:Plant only plants that are deer resistant (there is no such thing as deer proof). A great resource for scoping out the resistance of common perennials is Landscape Plants Rated by Deer ResistanceCheck out what works for your neighbors. If nobody in your neighborhood has a certain type of plant then it may not be worth the money to plant it. Vise-versa, if your neighbors do have a certain type of plant then it might be a safer bet.Once you have them planted, use a deer deterrent. I use Deerfence. It works well but has to be reapplied after heavy rains. Con: it smells god-aweful! (Think wolf scrotum sweat). Another deterrent I have found that works is cinnamon. I pick up the 16oz bottle at Costco for $2.59. It also has to be reapplied somewhat often. There are other products out there but I have found that these work the best for the deer in my neighborhood.Get a motion-sensor sprinkler. This works well but is kind of noisy and doesn't work once it feeezes out.Get a ultrasonic sound motion-activated sound blaster. (Some people swear by these by they didn't work on the deer here). There are other deer and animal deterrents out there so you may have to experiment to find what works in your neighborhood. Good luck!

How would you stop deer from eating a woodland garden?

Deer are a real problem all through the country. There are more of them now than there were in colonial days, by a long shot.Dealing with deer means employing several modes of attack at the same time. There’s a long article on my blog, wellspringkim.com, that addresses the issue of deer.Fencing the property is worth the price if you plan to stay in the house. It will make life so much easier! Install an 8′ or 8 1/2′ tall fence if the deer can see through it. They are not likely to jump over a 6 1/2′ solid fence if they can’t see where they’re going to land. But if they do jump it, and are rewarded with tempting yews and azaleas, they’ll jump it again.Deer repellent sprays work very well when applied regularly, on both the tops and bottoms of leaves. A herd of deer comes through the berm every day, and they have sampled many landscape plants. The vegetables have a taller fence (plastic fence and bird netting supported by 7′ stakes; garden “strip” is next to the house, so they can’t jump into it), and I use Deer Stopper spray (from the garden center) on the winter violas and pansies in the front. When we finish a bottle of milk, I add a cup of water, swish it around, and pour the diluted solution on the tomato tops (summer) or on shrubs, just to keep them guessing. They also dislike fatty acids, dairy, horticultural oil, Irish Spring soap (hang chunks among the branches), fine green florist’s wire strung between twigs or across a pathway, bird netting, dogs, Milorganite, fish emulsion fertilizer (great for hostas), slaughterhouse pellets, flashing mylar strips, putrescent (rotten) egg solids (in many sprays), baited electric fence…As the garden develops, transition over to deer-resistant plants. That won’t get you 100% protection, however. Try Boxwood, Mahonia, Hellebores, ferns, foxglove, Pieris japonica, Farfugium, daffodils. I love plants in the Rhododendron genus, and I will do anything to save them. That’s where the Deer Stopper will be used, when I have Rhododendrons and azaleas again. Check out the article in the blog for a “multi-pronged approach”. And good luck.
