How Do I Know If A Repair Shop Is Telling Me The Truth About The Pully On My Car Is Bad

Will bad idler pulley drain battery?

It's not likely. You do need the belt the idler pulley is on to turn the alternator and charge the battery, but if that belt wasn't turning you'd know about it long before the battery died. The fact that the pulley was bad for a "while" makes me think the problems are lack of maintenance.

Driving with bad idler pully?

about a month ago i had my serpentine belt on my ford Taurus 2001 replaced. after it was replaced ,the guy that replaced it for me said that the idler pulley looked like the bearing was going bad. now a month later the idler pulley has started to squeak and has been doing this for about a week. i wanted to know how long can i drive before it will need replacing and how much will it cost?

Can a bad alternator, bad bearing or bad pulley cause your check engine light to come on?

Yes, it most certainly will! It will set a code P0622 (Alternator "F-terminal" circuit malfunction) store it in the PCM history and command the MIL (check engine light ON)

NOTE: This is a CAN "C" vehicle and the field current is monitored by the PCM! The MIL will not illuminate on ALL vehicles that have a charging system issues but, it will on this one!

How do I bypass power steering pump and completely get rid of it?

What do you mean when you say that the pump can't be repaired or replaced? If it's a matter of not being able to afford to fix it or you can't get the parts, then you are probably going to be without a truck for a while until you can get it fixed properly. While it may technically be possible to do away with the power steering, it is most likely going to be more difficult and more expensive than making repairs (if you want it to be safe at all).Vehicles that have power steering simply aren't designed to be driven without it. You will cause damage to other steering components such as the rack or gearbox. Not only that, but vehicles are geared differently now. The steering on a non powered vehicle was designed to function without hydraulics. Without power, a modern system's steering radius is affected greatly, they literally can't turn as far without power. The heavier the vehicle, the harder it is to steer without power. In particular, I would not attempt to drive any pickup(or larger vehicle) on the road without power steering. There's simply to much risk. There are only two times when I would even consider driving a vehicle with failed power steering:In an emergency. Either I need to get the vehicle home, or I need to get someone to a hospital and have no other options. It's a farm vehicle, the only thing I use it for is moving a few tools around a field.I've had to move two modern vehicles with failed power steering. The first was a Honda Civic that wouldn't run. We dragged it about ten miles with me steering the car. It was really hard to turn at all, and that was with a fairly lightweight car. Afterwards it felt like I'd spent the entire day weightlifting, just from a short drive. The other vehicle was my friend's Dakota pickup. I went out with him to get the truck. The pump had failed and we needed to get it back to his house so that we had space and tools to work with. We got it started, he hopped in to drive, and I followed in my car. I followed him right up until he plowed into a tree on a particularly sharp turn. He simply couldn't make the turn without power steering. He ended up with a tow bill, body shop bill, the repair bill for the pump, and a hospital visit on top. That's why I will never recommend doing away with power steering on a vehicle.

How do you tell if a crankshaft is bad?

Around a month ago I discovered that my crank pulley in my 92 honda accord was loose. The mechanic I brought it to tightened the bolt but the whole pulley was still wabbling. I know that it needs to be replaced but every mechanic I talk to says that there is only around an 80% chance of that actually fixing the car because the crankshaft may be bad as well. Why is it that nobody seems to be able to tell if the crankshaft is bad before I go dumping $300 into my car. I love my car and I've had it for 3 years but I just want some reassurance that the car will actually be repaired.

Uh....i noticed water leaking at a steady rate behind the pulley in my car?

You need to get this fix before you do serious damage to your auto. That built in hole the other is talking about is called a weep valve and is their to give you warning it is time to change out your water pump. Being that you said it is behind the pulley would definitely most likely be your water pump. Pumps don't cost much and can sometimes be replaced easily by a back yard mechanic. The good news about this is that it is a simple fix that is not uncommon and there is less likely any serious damage like a cracked block. Engine blocks can crack from over heating, hosing a hot engine down with cold water or a thrown rod. These are usually diagnosed by seeing foaming scummy like water in the radiator fluid. Just take of the cap when the engine is cool and look, the scum floats to the surface.

What could be the cause of throwing my serpentine belt off when I crank to test?

Brian R. Sanderson has it pretty much covered I believe. In order for us to help you better, can you give us your vehicle make, model and year? Also tell us how this started, what was the reason for replacing the belt in the first place? If a pulley is seized it wouldn’t normally jump off right away, but it would squeal very loudly and heat up to a breaking point. One of the pulleys could have a bearing that is loose enough to allow the pulley to shift and allow the belt to jump off, but not that likely.Did you try more than once? Make sure the belt is properly set in all the pulleys. Also make sure you have the right size belt. With the belt removed, check the rotation of each pulley and see if any of them make noise or have friction. Also look at all the pulleys to see if they line up. Did a power steering pump, alternator, or A/C Compressor bolt break causing one of them to be out of alignment? Some more information would help us in solving your issue.Best regards,Delmer.

Repair question for 2001 ford ranger pickup?

Which engine? The 2.5L I4, 3.0L V6, or 4.0L V6? Are you sure it's a belt or accessory drive problem? Try removing the belt first then, start the engine and see if you still hear the sqeeling noise. If the noise disappears, shut the engine off and spin the alternator, water pump pulley, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley by hand. Whichever one "feels" abnormal should be the culprit. If the noise still persists, even with the belt removed, you've eliminated everything the belt drives as the source of the noise, including the belt itself, and need to look elsewhere for the cause of the noise. Hope this helped.
