How Do I See A Blue Whale Up Close

Can A Blue Whale Jump Out Of The Water?

Though it might be possible, it also might be very dangerous for a Blue Whale to breach (jump out of the water).

They have been seen lunging, where the head will come up and out of the water, but there are no documented cases of a Blue whale breaching.

I've gone out on Blue whale watches a half a dozen times now and seen dozens of them. They're quite magnificent to watch.

The most common behaviors (in a general descending order of likelihood):

Blowing - where they exhale as they come to the surface
Dorsal Fin - cruising close enough to the surface to show their very small and very far back dorsal fin.
Fluking - when the tail lifts up just before diving
Gulping - taking in a mouthful of fish. If the water is very clear you may be able to see the rorqual (big mouth) full of water.
Rolling - whales sometimes roll when breeding and females will roll over a little bit when nursing, sometimes you can see the pectoral fins when they do this.
Spyhopping - when just the head up to the eye comes out of the water (I've never seen this)
Lunging - when part of the head or mouth may come out of the water when feeding or perhaps in mating or in defense

So while you won't see them doing the spectacular leaps out of the water that Humpback whales are known for, there's still plenty to observe. They're the largest animal that has ever lived and are rare and endangered creatures - you will be in a very small club to have seen them alive!

How well can a blue whale hear?

Blue whales are among the loudest animals on the planet. They emit a series of pulses, groans, and moans at a fundamental frequency of between 10 and 40 Hz, and it’s thought that, in good conditions, blue whales can hear each other up to 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away.

How did they hunt and kill blue whales?

Rail guns :)

Can you swim with blue whales?

It is, as others have written, illegal to approach blue whales as they are endangered. But whales are very inquisitive and may approach you, in which case, if you are in the water, you can swim with them. Blue whales in particular are easy going, live almost entirely on krill, and are at 90% their historic population in the eastern Pacific, so they shouldn’t be too afraid of humans or boats in American waters.I would advise caution when swimming with them, thought. At that size… a love tap could kill you. And if you approach too directly or make what they read at a threat, they can capsize or crush a boat with their tails, which are some 30 feet across. Don’t get me wrong, I’d jump at the opportunity to get up close and personal with the biggest animal that’s ever lived. But be smart about it.

Which is taller a giraffe or a blue whale?

The average adult Giraffe is about 15-18 Feet tall. A Blue Whale is blue whale that is about 85 Feet (the average sized large adult), will have a diameter of about 16 feet, so it would be about 16 feet tall. The width of the tale on a whale this size will be about 20 feet. So they are very close in height to an adult Giraffe, but weigh about 80 to 90 times more than a giraffe (1 ton verse 80 to 90 tons for the whale).

"How far away can the blue whale be heard?"?

The Blue Whale is the second loudest animal in the world (the loudest is the sperm whale [1]). Estimates made by Cummings and Thompson (1971) and Richardson et al (1995) suggest that source level of sounds made by Blue Whales are between 155 and 188 decibels when measured at a reference pressure of one micropascal at one metre. Even accounting for different acoustic impedances between water and air and different standard reference pressures, an equivalent sound range in air is 89–122 decibels.[2] By comparison, a pneumatic drill is about 100 dB. A human, however, would likely not perceive the Blue Whale as the second loudest of all animals. All Blue Whale groups make calls at a fundamental frequency of between 10 and 40 Hz, and the lowest frequency sound a human can typically perceive is 20 Hz. Blue Whale calls last between ten and thirty seconds. Additionally Blue Whales off the coast of Sri Lanka have been recorded repeatedly making "songs" of four notes duration lasting about two minutes each, reminiscent of the well-known Humpback Whale songs. Researchers believe that as this phenomenon has not been seen in any other populations, it may be unique to the B. m. brevicauda (Pygmy) subspecies.

Scientists do not know why Blue Whales vocalise. Richardson et al (1995) discuss six possible reasons:

Maintenance of inter-individual distance
Species and individual recognition,
Contextual information transmission (e.g., feeding, alarm, courtship)
Maintenance of social organization (e.g., contact calls between females and males)
Location of topographic features
Location of prey resources

Which is bigger, a blue whale or a whale shark?

Size

The Blue Whale is believed to be the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth. The largest known dinosaur of the Mesozoic era was the Argentinosaurus, which is estimated to have weighed up to 90 tonnes (100 short tons). There is some uncertainty as to the biggest Blue Whale ever found. Most data comes from Blue Whales killed in Antarctic waters during the first half of the twentieth century and was collected by whalers not well-versed in standard zoological measurement techniques. The longest whales ever recorded were two females measuring 33.6 m and 33.3 m (110 ft 3 in and 109 ft 3 in) respectively. However, there are some disputes over the reliability of these measurements. The longest whale measured by scientists at the American National Marine Mammal Laboratory (NMML) was 29.9 m long (98 ft) — about the same length as a Boeing 737 aeroplane or three double-decker buses.

A Blue Whale comes in first place when judging animal size. A Blue Whale's tongue is so big that it is about the size of an elephant and 50 humans could stand on its tongue. Its heart is close to the size of a small car. A human baby could crawl through a Blue Whale's arteries. During the first 7 months of its life, a baby Blue Whale drinks approximately 400 litres (100 US gallons) of milk every day. Baby Blue Whales gain weight as quickly as 90 kg (200 pounds) every 24 hours. Even at birth, they weigh up to 1350 kg (3,000 lb) – the same as a fully-grown hippopotamus.

Blue Whales are very difficult to weigh because of their massive size. Most Blue Whales killed by whalers were not weighed as a whole, but cut up into manageable pieces before being weighed. This caused an underestimate of the total weight of the whale, due to loss of blood and other fluids. Even so, measurements between 150 to 170 tonnes (160 and 190 short tons) were recorded of animals up to 27 m (88 ft 6 in) in length. The weight of a 30 m (98 ft) individual is believed by the NMML to be in excess of 180 tonnes (200 short tons). The largest Blue Whale accurately weighed by NMML scientists to date was a female that weighed 177 tonnes (196 short tons).

What are the differences between a blue whale and a whale shark?

The whale shark is the largest living fish, while the blue whale is the largest living animal.According to National Geographic, the average weight of a whale shark is 20.6 tons. The length of a whale shark ranges from 18 to 32.8 feet. In comparison, the average weight of a blue whale is close to 200 tons. In addition, the length of a blue whale ranges from 82 to 105 feet. This makes the blue whale the clear winner, in both weight and length.

If someone was in the water next to a blue whale, would they be able to hear its calls?

Let’s just say that someone in the water and close to a blue whale would certainly know when the whale was making any sounds. If the whale was making an all out, full power call intended for another whale that is possibly miles away, it would be my own analysis that the person would feel it more than hear it. Since the frequencies emitted are so low, it would sound like a very low rumble and cause noticeable pressure waves on the ears (the ear drum and inner ear). This would probably be uncomfortable if one was underwater—less so if it were in the air. These low frequency emanations might cause dizziness and disorientation for the person and the person might even become nauseous.I have been close to humpbacks when they were hunting. A big female was calling the plays (directing other whales while they were making a “bubble net” and helping to “herd” a school of fish into a column that other whales could rise up from underneath to eat. I was listening through use of a sensitive hydrophone. Her calls were loud! When she made the final call that signaled the whales underneath to rise and scoop up the column of fish, it sounded like the blaring of a giant trumpet and was almost ear-shattering! I can only imagine the power that would behind the call of a whale 4–5 times (or more) larger!
