How Do I Start My Own Dog Daycare . And I

What do I need to start a dog daycare?

First a permit from zoning allowing that business to operate where you have chose to open it. A Permit & inspection from Animal Control. A business license, a tax number, insurance & bonded. Oh, & a whole lot more. You should know a bit about dog training so you can use proper corrections on the dogs that misbehave.

Check with your State, County or City Animal Ordinances/Animal Control, gov pages. Call them. Go talk to them. You must be at least 18 &/or depending on your state requirements.

We wrote a great blog post about this on our website. But to answer the question, 1) Check with your local permitting office to see if you need a special space, commercial or light industrial, 2) you will probably need to operate similarly to a vet, so operate in a commercial space, 3) have a fire inspection for fire suppression, and 4) probably will need a state license for the business, but depends on the state you live in. ASPCA recommends at least 100 sq ft per dog for daycare, so if you have 5000 sq ft, you can have up to 50 dogs. The Dog Gurus recommend a ration of 15 dogs per 1 dog handler. You can look to do training or boarding or grooming off of this business too. Good luck - Jack

The first thing you need is to consult your municipality to have a permit. If it is small enough, you might be able to get away with not having one. However, if the neighbors complain, it could be trouble. I would suggest for it to be a day care/ dogwalking / hotel /daycare. Of course, it would depend on the size of your home, if that’s were you are doing it. If you choose a retail location, you are restricted by space. Maybe if you are more specific with your plans, it would be easier to analyze what is best for you.

What do you think about doggie daycare?

I work at a doggy daycare/kennel, overall its a great way to socialize/exercise a pup. Depending on the place, generally it can be a much more controlled enviroment (an unbiased supervisor, who knows who should be out there and who should not, unlike a lot of dog owners at dog parks). My only problem, thing that stresses me out during the day, Is the owners who habitually (like everyday) bring in their dogs as opposed to training them. If they are at daycare, they aren't tearing stuff up at the house, and they are completely exausted at the end of the day when they go home with their owners. Although, it can make my job harder, I can't really say the dogs don't have a good life, they absolutely love it, and even though they don't have the most competent owners, at least their owners have big pocketbooks .

I am 16 years old and want to start doggie daycare at my house this summer. How do I do that?

Maybe you need to find out if it's legal to do that where you live. Where I live, you can't do it on a property that's less than 5 acres. If you want to look after one or two dogs at a time, you could probably get away with that even if it isn't legal. On anything less than an acreage, your neighbours could easily take exception to extra dogs at your house. But, frankly, I wouldn't send my dog to be looked after by a 16 year old unless she was a relative, or neighbour or otherwise known to me, and if I knew my dog was easy to care for. And most people who want a dogsitter want one at various times throughout the year, not just in summer, and it's hardly worth sending a dog to someone who you can't send it to all year long. People like to have their dogs looked after by someone their dog and they are used to.

How much do dog day care centers cost?

Here in the states doggy day cares are opening up all over some are very high and some are very reasonable depending on where you go and what they offer, There are also people doing it out of their own homes. What every single one of them demand is for your dog to have their kennel cough shots before they can stay at their facility. The business day cares have a kennel some what like you would find in a shelter for unwanted dogs with a doggy door going outside in their own fenced in area, Some businesses offer play and walks for an extra price and some have a set price. The people who run them out of their own homes always have a fenced yard and offer a set price. The businesses that i have called do ask what kind of dog you have or how many so i right away assumed they go by size to make their price. They also charged i believe it was 11 dollars a day and like 6 dollars for each additional dog , But i have smaller dogs, im sure bigger dogs were more. I think that was the cheapest i found in my town. They did have food available there but you could bring your own food in. Now that one they do not take the dogs out and exercise them. They do offer longer stays such as in weeks for people going on vacation or job related reasons. None of them offered pick up and drop offs and i think that's a great idea. The Businesses also have vets on hand or on call. As for the home business people they said nothing about having a vet on hand or on call. As for the hours the Businesses do have set hours i believe it was either 6am to 7pm or 8am to 6pm? can't quite remember. and if the dog were to stay past the set time they would be charged a 1/2 day fee. I hope this helped some? good luck!

The best way to hire a good groomer is to ask people in the area, any employees you might have, or your clients, or other business owners in the area. you can always look up grooming on the internet for groomers in your location, and try out the ones with 4 and 5 star ratings. weed them out by excessivew charge, willingness to work with you , cleanliness of their facility or mobile unit, and of course how talented they are at grooming. do they groom every dog the same, example: does every dog get the same “puppy cut” or do they actually groom breed specific. Just dive in and start finding someone, you will find the right person to work with.
